A yellow weather warning for heavy rain has been issued for Galway and much of Ireland this weekend.

Heavy rain is expected overnight for Galway and most of the country, with a weather alert issued for Connacht, Longford, Offaly, Westmeath, Cavan, Monaghan, Clare, Cork, Kerry, Limerick and Tipperary.

Current forecasts from Met Eireann are predicting rainfall of 25-35mm, with the possibility of spot flooding.

There is also the chance that rain may turn to snow in some places.

The yellow alert will be in effect from 9pm tonight midday on Saturday morning.

Further north, a snow-ice warning has been issued for Donegal with heavy rainfall turning to snow expected to cause poor driving conditions, and larger accumulations in higher areas.

Back in Galway, lowest temperatures of 1 to 4 degrees overnight, with strong southwesterly winds bringing the possibility of spot flooding.

Sleet is likely in places tonight, turning to spells of heavy rain on Saturday morning, with the chance of hail and thunder later in the day.
