Community centres and community facilities in Galway are set to benefit from almost €270,000 in funding under the Community Enhancement Programme, Minister Joe O’Brien has announced.

Galway City will receive €109,412 of the €270,000 – while Galway County has been allocated €159,940.

The overall funding of €5 million was carved out among local authorities across the State, and is designed to assist community groups during this difficult time.

Minister Joe O’Brien said that community centres and other important community buildings operate at the heart of each community and that this funding will provide capital grants to help improve these facilities.

“They provide activities and services that help strengthen the bonds that tie communities together and they provide valuable services to the people in their area,” he said.

“This €5m funding will be administered through existing structures that are in place under the Department’s Community Enhancement Programme.

“Funding will be allocated to each Local Authority area, and the Local Community Development Committee will administer the programme in each area.

“This ensures that decisions are made locally to best reflect the needs in a given area.”
