Met Éireann has issued a 24-hour yellow warning for Galway today with sub-zero temperatures forecast for parts of the county.
There will be icy conditions in some areas as showers gradually track south-eastwards over Ireland.
The forecasters say some of the showers will be of freezing rain, sleet and possibly snow.
Motorists are being urged to take care as untreated roads and paths may be treacherous in places.
The status yellow warning is likely to be the last of this cold snap, with temperatures rising over the weekend.
But early indications are that temperatures will fall to below 0 degrees once again over the Christmas weekend.
