Torrential downpours expected as Met Éireann warns of thunderstorms and flooding

Met Éireann has updated its status yellow weather warning today for Galway, with heavy rain expected overnight and on Sunday morning.

Some torrential downpours are expected in parts, resulting in surface flooding. There is also the potential for thunderstorms and lightning strikes.

The rain will move northwards across much of the country tonight, clearing from the north and northwest on Sunday morning.

The warning begins at 1am and will be lifted at 10am on tomorrow morning, Sunday.

A status orange warning for heavy rain has been issued for a number of counties: Carlow, Kildare, Kilkenny, Laois, Longford, Offaly, Westmeath, Cavan, Donegal, Leitrim, Roscommon, Sligo, Waterford from 4am to 8am on Sunday.

All six counties in the North also have a status yellow warning tonight issued by the Met Office.
