Temperatures will finally start to increase slightly over the weekend after what has been a freezing start to the new year.

But before temperatures rise on Saturday, Met Éireann has said two more days of extremely cold weather are in store – with Friday expected to be one of the coldest days of winter so far.

The weather experts issued yet another weather warning for freezing conditions and ice across all counties in the Republic, coming into effect at 5.00 pm this afternoon.

Met Éireann’s warning will be lifted at 11.00 tomorrow morning, while a similar warning issued by the Met Office for counties in the North will be lifted at 12.00 tomorrow.

Tonight and this evening will be extremely cold with minimum temperatures of -1 to -4 degrees Celsius forecast in the West.

Today will be another mostly clear day though, with any showers clearing to sunshine and well-scattered wintry showers.

Tomorrow, Friday, will be one of the coldest days yet, with widespread frost and ice to start and temperatures struggling to reach afternoon highs of more than 0 to 3 degrees.
