A 24-hour weather warning has been issued for Galway with snow and bitter temperatures below zero forecast on Thursday.
Met Éireann issued a status yellow weather warning for Galway and the rest of the Republic as the country faces ultra-cold conditions this week.
The warning comes into effect at 8am on Thursday, and will remain in place throughout the day and overnight until 8am on Friday morning.
A band of sleet and snow spreading northeastwards will give snow accumulations of up to 5cm in some areas, Met Éireann has said.
Accumulations will be higher in mountainous areas, but the snow should make way for rain in the west and south on Thursday night.
