East Galway TD Seán Canney has welcomed news that construction is underway on the new €7 million purpose-built orthopaedic operating theatres at Merlin Park University Hospital.
The project was undertaken after the old theatre block fell into disrepair with the roof structure failing.
Deputy Canney said that he is ‘delighted’ that the project is finally under construction.
“The project is being constructed by Paul Carey, Carey Development and the theatres are expected to be available for use in 12 months,” the Independent TD said.
“This is progress that is necessary and when completed will provide a modern, purpose build orthopaedic theatre to serve the needs of Galway.”
Orthopaedic operating theatres at Merlin Park were closed for over six months in 2018 after severe leaks were found in the roof above the surgery theatres.
