The cross-country season kicked off over the weekend with the Castlegar Open Cross-Country event taking place in Doughiska. Seven teams from the club participated in the 4 x 500m relay events with numerous wins for the club in each age category.

A number of the club’s members also participated in the 2k event. This event, which was enjoyed by all those who participated, prepares athletes for the upcoming County XC Finals which take place on Sunday 7th October (Even Ages) in the Palace Fields in Tuam.

Any member who is hoping to participate at these finals should notify the club’s competition secretary, Marie Moynihan, this week.

Best wishes to all the club coaches who are participating in the Hell and Back fundraiser for a Community Sports Facility in Tuam. They leave for Kilruddery Estate, Bray, Co. Wicklow, on Saturday morning.

Sincere thanks to the management and fitness instructors at Coral Leisure who have been a huge support to all those taking part in this event.

Our U6, U8 & U10 girls have now finished for the season. Many thanks to all of the trainers and helpers involved this year who gave so freely of their time and gave the girls a great start to their footballing careers! Many thanks to Killererin also for a very enjoyable blitz last weekend.

LEAGUE CHAMPIONS 2017:

Congratulations to our seniors who have qualified for the senior football championship quarter-final having defeated St James’ by 0-15 to 1-8, played in Pearse Stadium on Sunday afternoon.  This game also doubled as the 2017 division 1 league final.

This win brings us to four-in-a-row league titles. Well done to captain, Micheál Lundy and the team.

We have been drawn to play Caherlistrane in the championship quarter-final on either Saturday or Sunday of this weekend.  As ever we thank you for your support in Pearse Stadium and ask for your on-going support in the next game.

JUNIORS LOSE OUT:

Hard luck to our Junior A team who were defeated by Pádraig Pearses  in the North Board final played in Barnaderg on Saturday. This was an excellent game of football with the teams tied at 1-5 each at half time and level again at full time 2-13 each.

However, Pearses went on to win by 3-19 to 2-16 in extra time. The scoreline does not reflect the closeness of the game even in extra time as with time almost up we were down by 2 points and had a chance of a goal.  This was denied and Pearses went upfield to score 1-1 without reply.

Conor Creaven and team captain, Alan O’Donovan, scored the Corofin goals. Well done to all the players involved with this panel and their dedicated mentors.  The team played excellent football throughout the campaign and gave us great entertainment in all their games.
