Maree Oranmore FC have been given the green light for two new all weather pitches that will allow them to keep training in the winter months.

The club has been granted planning permission for 9-a-side and 5-a-side all weather pitches, next to those already present at the Maree Community sport complex.

One public submission related to the application was received from the Galway Cycling Campaign, asking that the plans include better bicycle parking facilities.

The club has also been given approval for floodlighting for the pitches, which would be allowed to operate until 10pm.

This was necessary due to large number of members, approximately 900 spread across 52 different teams, which would see older groups training later at night.

A cover letter submitted by Maree Oranmore FC said that this is a fast growing area, and having improved community facilities will help to “counterbalance antisocial activity”.

It would also act as a, “deterrent to alcohol and substance abuse and will have a massive benefit to the physical/mental health of our people.”

“To cater for all in our community and for our local schools we hope to build a small cage and 9 a side astro adjacent to the existing Maree Community pitches.”

“Free access will be provided for our local Maree National School which is beside the proposed facility.”

“These facilities will primarily be used in winter time when grass surfaces are unplayable and there is little or no other sporting activities on as GAA sports are confined to Spring/Summer time.”

The cover letter also states that the pitches will be available to all sports and community members.

Planning permission was granted for the project by the county council with eight conditions attached.

Revised plans must be submitted for a larger, non-standard cycle space, and one condition also outlined how the floodlights must be fitted and controlled to stop light from spilling to neighbouring land.
