Connacht Senior Ladies Football Semi-Final – Sunday, 21st October 2018

Kilkerrin/Clonberne 8-19 Kilbride 0-3

Darren Kelly in Clonberne

For the second successive game, Kilkerrin/Clonberne produced a ruthless performance on Sunday as they qualified for the Connacht Senior Ladies Football Final after this 40-point trouncing of their Roscommon counterparts.

Kevin Reidy’s charges attacked from the start as Louise Ward hit the net after just two minutes.  Eva and Lynsey Noone also troubled the umpires in the opening stages and when Annette Clarke’s attempted fisted point dropped underneath the crossbar on six minutes, Kilkerrin/Clonberne were 2-2 to 0-0 clear.

It was a blow for Kilbride who needed to get on top early but their best chance spurned on eight minutes effectively ended their hopes of providing a shock.  Alice Kelly’s run cut open gaps in the Galway team’s defence before she found Fiona Tully.

But the wing forward’s low drive agonisingly went narrowly wide and Kilkerrin/Clonberne did leave anything to chance after.  Lisa Gannon and Olivia Divilly (3) added white flags before Ward and Clarke combined on 18 minutes.  The latter struck her second goal making it 3-6 to 0-0.

After Lynsey Noone and Ward kicked points, Ailish Morrissey treated the home support with an excellent strike for Kilkerrin/Clonberne’s fourth goal on 24 minutes.  And after Divilly and Clarke stretched margin further, Ward was put through for the fifth green flag three minutes later making it 5-10 to 0-0.

Finally, Kilbride got off the mark through Sinead Clabby but a Morrissey white flag gave Kilkerrin/Clonberne a 5-11 to 0-1 interval advantage.  Divilly (5), Clarke (2) and Morrissey made it 5-19 to 0-2 before Katelyn Mee took Clarke’s pass for the sixth green flag on 54 minutes.

Beforehand, Kilbride were given a golden opportunity Casey Keane’s penalty was excellently saved by stand-in keeper Leah Pettit.  Clabby converted Kilbride’s last point leaving them 6-19 to 0-3 behind.   Lynsey Noone and Divilly completed the rout with two late goals for the north Galway outfit.
