Galway daily sport Joe Canning retires from inter-county hurling

Galway legend Joe Canning has announced that he is ending his storied career in inter-county hurling.

Canning, now 32 years old, cited the impact of multiple recent injuries and surgeries as his reason for stepping back.

His decision came immediately after Galway’s 1-30 to 3-20 loss to Waterford in the 2nd round qualifier last week.

Joe Canning debuted for Galway in 2008, and in the years since then has claimed four All-Ireland titles through the years, including the coveted senior victory in 2017.

He has also won five GAA All-Stars Awards, and is finishing his career as the all time top championship scorer.

But while he is done with playing for Galway, Canning will continue to be involved with Portumna at the club level.
