The first round of voting concluded in the early hours of Tuesday morning (29th May) in our competition to select ‘Galway’s Greatest Ladies Footballer’ as the 56 entrants were whittled down to 32 players.
Three players got more than 70% in their respective first round ties with 2004 winning captain Annette Clarke topping the poll with 85%. Dual star Caitriona Cormican was next scoring 74% followed by former captain and 2017 All-Star nominee Sinead Burke with 71%.
Kilkerrin/Clonberne’s Olivia Divilly came next with 55% while Fabienne Cooney (54%), Niamh Fahey (54%), Sarah Conneally (53%), Edel Concannon (51%) and Emer Flaherty (50%) all scored at least half the available votes.
The top players from each of the 14 first round polls qualified for the quarter-finals along with the best four third placed finishers. The quarter-finals, which start this morning (Tuesday), will see another eight groups with four each. Only the winners advance along with the best four runners-up.
As mentioned before the competition started, any ties would be settled by the adjudication committee and they were called upon to make only decision.
Sarah Gormally (26%), Mairead Seoighe (23%) and Johanna Connolly (19%) were the three best third placed finishers but there was a tie for the one remaining spot. The adjudication committee sided with Lisa Cohill (17%) over Bridget Fallon.
There was no need to make a decision in Match 1 between Michelle Delaney and Sarah Gormally as both scored 26% which was enough to carry three qualifiers into the quarter-finals.
And there was no need to make a decision in Match 13 where Roisin Leonard and Louise Ward finished joint winners on 37%.
Some big names to depart after the first round included 2004 All-Ireland winners Aine Gilmore, Patricia Gleeson and Aoibheann Daly along with soccer star Dora Gorman, Tina Hughes and current Galway panelist Lisa Gannon.
The quarter-final pairings will appear below shortly after the Round One results and the polls will stay open for 15 hours. The semi-finals take place on Wednesday.
