The first round of twitter voting concluded in the early hours of Tuesday morning (15th May) in our competition to select ‘Galway’s Greatest Hurler’ as the 108 entrants were whittled down to 56 players.
Three players got more than 80% in their respective first round ties with 1980s legend Joe Cooney topping the poll at 94%. Kevin Broderick was next highest getting 82% while Gerry McInerney, father of Gearoid, achieved 81% in his opening round.
The top two players from each of the 27 first round polls qualified for Round Two along with the best two third placed finishers. The quarter-finals, which start this morning (Tuesday) will see another 14 groups with four each. Only the winners advance along with the best two runners-up.
As mentioned before the competition started, any ties would be settled by the adjudication committee and they were called upon to make three decisions.
In Match 16, there were two players level in second place and they sided with Seamus Coen over Jason Flynn.
In Match 26, there were two players level in second placed and they sided with John Hanbury over Vinny Maher.
Regarding the third placed finishers, Damien Hayes automatically took the first spot with 21% but there were three players level on 19%. The committee gave the nod to Mick Gill ahead of Michael Connolly and Junior Mahony.
Some big names to depart after the first round included Aidan Harte, Anthony Cunningham, Liam Hodgins, Niall McInerney, Damien Joyce, David Collins, Jonathan Glynn and Conor Whelan.
The quarter-final pairings will appear below shortly after the Round One results and the polls will stay open for 18 hours. The semi-finals take place on Wednesday.
