A free conference at GMIT later this month will help people to learn more about the pressing issue of concussions in sports.
The ‘Heads Up!’ Sports Concussion Conference will take place on Tuesday, March 29 at the IoT’s Galway Campus.
It is free for sports coaches, players, parents, PE teachers and anyone interested in sport who wishes to learn more about concussion injuries and how to manage them.
The conference will be the first in a series of events associated with the EU Erasmus+ funded project ‘Get your head in the game – Sport Concussion Awareness and Training (SCAT)’.
“Sports concussion has been in the media quite a lot recently, and there is a considerable amount of misinformation and an understandable level of fear as a result,” said Dr Lisa Ryan of GMIT.
She added that this projects brings together experts from “across Europe and Australia” to address the subject.
“SCAT Erasmus+ will “help educate individuals regarding concussions in sport to enhance their awareness of the prevalence and how to manage concussions safely,” Dr Ryan said.
The project is led by GMIT, in collaboration with Letterkenny IT, and international partners in the UK, Denmark, and Australia.
The SCAT project launched in 2019 to gain an in-depth understanding of the definition and implications of concussion in amateur sport settings across Europe.
The team created a training guide and an online course to show educators how to develop concussion-specific training.
The consortium’s findings will be presented during this ‘Heads Up!’ Conference and will provide information on what a concussion is, their prevalence across sports, and best methods to identify and manage them.
“This will be a highly engaging event where attendees will have the opportunity to develop their knowledge and network with leading experts in concussion research,” adds Dr Ryan.
