Success for Coláiste Iognáid at BT Young Scientist.

0
The awards were flooded with students from all over the country.

2018 is shaping up to be an excellent year for scientific discovery- The BT young scientist results are out and the competition has showed a higher standard of work than ever before. Galway students were among those taking home huge prizes- including the first place in the Junior Group category, a highly prestigious award.

Aoibhe, Ellie and Kate’s hard work paid off in the end.

The winners of this prize were Aoibhe Briscoe, Ellie Concannon and Katie Owens from Coláiste Iognáid school. The girls’ project was titled Think Before You Drink: Microplastics. It was concerned with how water pollution has led to a disturbing level of microplastics in the water we drink everyday. One of their findings was particularly shocking- the level of microplastics in the classroom water was at 2.7, much higher than the European average, while the staff room water was much lower at 1.6. The girls discovered that a lot of the time staff’s water would be filtered while pupil’s would not, something that stunned them. It’s no surprise that they also took  an Environmental Protection Agency Special Award

These students are following in the footsteps of  another Galway student Thomas Hayes, a 6th year. Thomas, representing Yeats College, won third prize in the Senior Individual Category last year. The title of his project was The Alternative Heart Valve Design, his goal was to develop heart valve prototypes for use in treating heart valve disease.

This year’s overall winner, however, hailed from Cork. Simon Meehan’s ‘Investigation of the antimicrobial effects of both aerial and root parts of selected plants against Staphylococcus aureus’, took the judges by storm and earned him the top spot. A transition year student, Simon now has the opportunity to represent Ireland in the European Union Contest for Young Scientists.

As the BT Young Scientist Awards end for another year, it’s a reassuring thought to know that the future of science is safe in the hands of Ireland’s secondary school students.

Match Reports: WORCESTER WARRIORS 24-24 CONNACHT

An entertaining first half followed by a battle for supremacy saw Worcester Warriors and Connacht share the spoils in Saturday’s European Challenge Cup encounter.

For Connacht, it secured their quarter-final place even if they’ll need a result against Oyonnax in seven days to ensure it’s a home tie.  But it’s unlikely an Irish semi-final will occur should Kieran Keane’s men advance that far.

Connacht had chances to win this after conceding two early tries and trailed until Tiernan O’Halloran’s try on 59 minutes.  But they preserved their unbeaten status even though they played with just 13 men for nine minutes.

Supporters barely had time to settle when the home side were 12 points ahead.  Francois Hougaard kept the ball in play before a Dean Hammond run opened the defence on two minutes.  Josh Adams kicked the ball through and Perry Humphreys got the touch down.

Chris Pennell registered the conversion before he also received a 10-minute sinbin for a trip on Kieran Marmion.

Beforehand, Worcester Warriors were threatening to run out of sight as on five minutes, they got over the line again.  GJ Van Velze’s volley was kicked on by Humphreys and Sam Lewis was ready to finish for a second five-pointer.

Connacht needed a reprieve and it came from Pennell’s departure.  And from the back of the scrum, John Muldoon capped his 50th Challenge Cup appearance on 17 minutes with their first try.

Craig Ronaldson was unerring from kicks and reduced the deficit to five but Worcester were back in the ascendancy on 22 minutes when Connacht lost their shape allowing an overlap and Adams’ long pass picked out Humphreys for his second try.

Pennell didn’t convert, his second miss, and this proved costly as Worcester had a presumed winning bonus point at half-time.  Beforehand, Bundee Aki looked to have scored for Connacht only to be adjudged to step into touch.

But Niyi Adeolokun punished sloppy opposing play to find a gap and break the defence for Connacht’s second try.

Ronaldson’s kick left it 17-14 but Worcester wouldn’t be denied.  Two tackles by Quinn Roux and Jarrad Butler saw both see the line and Adams took advantage against Connacht’s 13 men getting their fourth try to lead 24-14 at half-time.

Connacht’s afternoon looked to get worse but a gallant work rate kept their opponents out.  Indeed, the home team didn’t score in the second half.

A Ronaldson penalty on 53 minutes left one converted try between them and it arrived six minutes later. O’Halloran broke two tackles to get over the line and Ronaldson made it four from four for parity.

Conor Carey also had a late Connacht score but the ball was adjudged to have been knocked on.  The Irish province looked determined to get their fourth try refusing penalty offers but it didn’t arrive.

They settle with two points, stay unbeaten and qualification is secured.  But they’ll still need a win against Oyonnax to keep the Sportsground buzzing in April.

Scorers:

Worcester Warriors – Perry Humphreys (10 – two tries), Sam Lewis (5 – try), Josh Adams (5 – try), Chris Pennell (4 – two conversions)

Connacht – Craig Ronaldson (9 – one penalty, three conversions), John Muldoon (5 – try), Niyi Adeolokun (5 – try), Tiernan O’Halloran (5 – try)

17:10:

What a way to spend a Saturday afternoon.  A Challenge Cup semi-final on Irish soil looks unlikely after the draw but we’re probably getting ahead of ourselves.  Connacht are in the quarter-finals and a win next week will bring that to the Sportsground.

We’ll have reports shortly on the game.  Glad you joined us!  Good Day!

European Action returns and Connacht are on the brink of a Challenge Cup quarter-final place.  A win (only their 3rd in England out of 23) will not just send Kieran Keane’s men into the last eight, but will also guarantee the Sportsground will be rocking in April.

Connacht have beaten Worcester Warriors in their last four meetings including a 15-8 victory in October.  And they did win 26-21 in their last visit to the Sixways Stadium in 2009.  Can they keep that run going?

Match Reports: GALWAY 1-10 MAYO 1-9

0

Thirty-five years on from the infamous 1983 All-Ireland Senior Football Final when Dublin broke Galway hearts, the Tribesmen had their own 12 apostles to savour as they achieved a third consecutive victory over Mayo.

This result will mean little later in the year when the sides clash in the league and championship but the momentum will stand Galway in good stead ahead of their introduction to Division One football.

However, straight red cards for Damien Comer and Sean Andy O’Ceallaigh mean they could miss action though Kevin Walsh won’t be too dejected if it’s just Sunday’s meeting with Leitrim though he’d definitely prefer one more look at the latter against Roscommon on January 21st.

Sean Mulkerrin was the other to see the line from a black card following a yellow meaning he won’t be forced out of any game time.

Galway trailed by 0-8 to 0-6 at half-time against a strong wind in Castlebar.  Indeed, conditions put the contest in doubt as incessant rain and wet patches dared suggest a second postponement could occur.

But the MacHale Park ground staff worked extremely hard to ensure action and the 2,679 supporters who attended the Friday night encounter weren’t disappointed with the fare.

Mayo’s Kevin McLoughlin and Galway’s Patrick Sweeney traded early minors before a Shane Nally brace put Mayo 0-3 to 0-1 ahead on eight minutes.  McLoughlin and Nally shared five first half scores just two days after returning from the team holiday in Malaysia.

Paul Conroy replied for the visitors before Eamonn Brannigan levelled.  And on the quarter hour, Barry McHugh’s first free put Galway ahead.

Galway were working hard putting pressure on David Clarke’s kicks but felt the effect in their legs and Mayo profited from the next four scores.  Brian Reape sent over three white flags before a McLoughlin placed ball put three between them.

Conroy reduced arrears on the half hour and the teams shared one more each through McLoughlin and McHugh to put Stephen Rochford’s side two ahead at half-time.

However, Mayo looked in the ascendancy four minutes after the restart when Peter Naughton calmly struck their goal putting them 1-8 to 0-6 clear.  But last year’s All-Ireland finalists wouldn’t tally again for 36 minutes as Galway overturned the game.

Whether soccer or football is his immediate future, Padraic Cunningham showed what an asset he could be for Galway.  After assisting with three scores before the break, he tapped over two of his own to leave a goal between them on 47 minutes.

And two minutes later, they were level as Sweeney’s low effort deflected into the net.  With momentum, Galway pushed on as McHugh and Comer troubled the umpires by the 52nd minute but that was the end of their scoring.

The final quarter became a dog fight as neither side were lacking determination.  Comer, Mulkerrin and O’Ceallaigh received their marching orders from referee Paddy Neilan – the former for lashing out after being fouled, the other two for deliberate take downs when Mayo were within scoring range.

Reape contributed a free in the fifth minute of added time but Mayo didn’t have time for an equaliser.  It could cost them a final place but with their full squad gradually returning to the set-up, it was the perfect work out for them.

While January football can be something of a lottery, Walsh’s charges are getting ideal questions for the year ahead.  They have Leitrim, Roscommon, Tyrone and Donegal before another joust with Mayo.  And based on this battle, Pearse Stadium will witness a massive crowd on February 11th.

GALWAY – Patrick Sweeney 1-1, Barry McHugh 0-3, Paul Conroy 0-2, Padraic Cunnigham 0-2, Eamonn Brannigan 0-1, Damien Comer 0-1

Our Friday Night Match is the Connacht FBD League re-fixed clash between Mayo and Galway.  The two rivals are well accustomed to each other but they haven’t met in the pre-season competition since Mayo beat Galway 0-12 to 0-9 in the 2010 Final.

However, it is the first of three guaranteed meetings this year (League – Feb 11th, Championship – May 13th) and potential new big names plus some established stars will get their chance to lay down a marker.

Match Preview: WORCESTER WARRIORS vs CONNACHT (Saturday, 13th January, 3pm Sixways Stadium).

0

Despite two defeats in their recent travels, Connacht’s form is still good ahead of their first 2018 European Challenge Cup tie.

Victory for Kieran Keane’s men and qualification for the quarter-finals in April is secured with the added carrot of a home game.

Even if they fall to Worcester Warriors, they should still achieve their target the following week against Oyonnax but with seeding a big factor across all five pools, a potential semi-final in Ireland on the road to Bilbao would give Connacht momentum.

They suffered an agonising 21-18 defeat to Leinster on New Year’s Day before a heavy beating to Munster last week (39-13).  That being said, Keane had rested his Irish international trio (Bundee Aki, Ultan Dillane, Kieran Marmion) but all three return to the starting line-up.

The Connacht coach has made eight changes from the Munster tie as they look to rediscover the form that produced back-to-back successes over Brive and a six-try demolition of Ulster.

Tiernan O’Halloran and Niyi Adeolkun stay in the back three with Darragh Leader named ahead of Matt Healy.  Aki and Tom Farrell form the centre partnership replacing Eoin Griffin and Pita Ahki.  And there’s a new look half-back pairing of Marmion and Craig Ronaldson for Caolin Blade and the rested Jack Carty.

Peter McCabe and Conor Carey remain as props with Dave Heffernan replacing Tom McCartney at hooker.  Dillane returns for the injured James Cannon in the second row along Quinn Roux.  And Eoghan Masterson gets the nod at flanker for Cillian Gallagher joining Jaarad Butler and John Muldoon.

Masterson captained Connacht for the first time in October when Connacht were 15-8 winners over Worcester and himself and Healy contributed tries.  Muldoon was rested that day but is the one survivor from their only victory in Sixways back in 2009.

Connacht’s record in England isn’t great having only achieved two wins out of 22 games (the other in 1997 against Northampton Saints).  But they have won four on the spin against Saturday’s opponent after their first trip in 2006 when Worcester prevailed 30-20.

It’s hard to gauge where Worcester Warriors are at as they’ve struggled this season and their last outing was a 46-25 defeat to Bath in the Aviva Premiership.

Coach Carl Hogg’s future is up in the air and he hasn’t committed past the summer while former Ulster supermo Alan Solomons is now director of rugby.  Both gave contrasting comments regarding how strong a line-up they’d put out but they have made six switches from the Bath game.

Perry Humphreys, Jamie Shillock, Simon Kerrod, Darren Barry, Pierce Phillips and Dean Hammond are the players in as they look to maintain their good home form (undefeated in four games) and know a victory will put them in the shake-up for knock qualification for the first time since 2009.

Key for the English outfit will be full back Josh Adams (who scored their try against Connacht in October), centre Chris Pennell, scrum half Francois Hougaard and forwards Dave Denton and GJ Van Velze.  They will seek to put pressure on Connacht in a tough exchange where the error count could be critical.

It’s a strong Connacht line-up even if the absences of Healy, Carty and McCartney are surprises but it’s their focus that’s going to ensure a fifth win in Europe this year.  Worcester are playing for survival in Europe and Connacht’s concentration must be alert or they could be in trouble.

That being said, the Irish province have been finding their feet in recent months and with Worcester missing players like Ben Te’o, Jono Lance and Will Spencer, this is an opportunity Connacht should not pass up.

Connacht: Tiernan O’Halloran; Darragh Leader, Bundee Aki, Tom Farrell, Niyi Adeolokun; Craig Ronaldson, Kieran Marmion; Peter McCabe, Dave Heffernan, Conor Carey; Ultan Dillane, Quinn Roux; Eoghan Masterson, Jarrad Butler, John Muldoon ©.

Replacements: Shane Delahunt, Denis Coulson, Dominic Robertson-McCoy, Gavin Thornbury, Naulia Dawai, Caolin Blade, Eoin Griffin, Cian Kelleher.

Worcester: Josh Adams; Perry Humphreys, Chris Pennell, Ryan Mills, Dean Hammond; Jamie Shillcock, Francois Hougaard; Ethan Waller, Jack Singleton, Simon Kerrod; Darren Barry, Pierce Phillips; Dave Denton, Sam Lewis, GJ Van Velze ©.

Enterprise Ireland’s first Competitive Start Fund (CSF) of the year will open to all sectors for applications on Tuesday 23rd January.

The €750,000 fund will give 15 successful applicants up to €50,000 in equity funding.

The fund closes to applications at 3pm on Tuesday, 6 February 2018.

The Competitive Start Fund aims to help the growth of start-up companies that have the capability to succeed in global markets.

The fund is designed to enable those companies reach key commercial and technical milestones, including evaluating overseas market opportunities, building prototypes, developing market entry plans and securing third party investment.

Applications from individuals, early stage companies or prospective businesses active in the manufacturing & internationally traded services sectors, particularly within ICT, are invited.

Subsectors include the Internet, Games, Apps, Mobile, SaaS, Cloud Computing, Enterprise Software, Lifesciences, Cleantech and Industrial Products.

The All Sector CSF is part of Enterprise Ireland’s strategy for increasing the number and quality of High Potential Start-Up companies (HPSUs) that have the potential to employ more than 10 people and achieve €1 million in export sales within three years.

Minister for Business, Enterprise and Innovation, Heather Humphreys TD said: “I’m delighted to see that the rates of early stage entrepreneurship in Ireland have returned to pre-recession levels, but in order to grow our levels of start-up activity, supports like Enterprise Ireland’s Competitive Start Fund are vital.

“As well as crucial funding, the CSF provides valuable business support and networking opportunities to innovative entrepreneurs and companies at the start of their journey.”

Commenting on the announcement, Tom Early, Department Manager, HPSU Start, Enterprise Ireland, said: “A key priority for Enterprise Ireland is to help Irish entrepreneurs and companies with global ambition to start and grow their businesses internationally.

“This All Sector CSF, with a particular focus on the ICT sector, is the first of eight start-up funds planned for 2018 and provides a kick-start for innovative early stage companies to get off the ground while receiving a critical funding boost of up to €50,000.”

In addition to written online applications, companies will be asked to prepare an online video pitch.

Govt launches post-Brexit strategy for Irish legal services

0
galway daily legal plan for ireland

An initiative by The Bar of Ireland supported by the IDA and the legal community was launched by the Minister for Justice and Equality, Charlie Flanagan, yesterday (Wednesday).

The initiative seeks to promote Ireland as a leading centre globally for international legal services.

When the UK finally leaves the European Union, Ireland will be the only English speaking common law jurisdiction fully integrated into the European legal order, and this could present opportunities for both the Irish legal sector and the wider economy.

In this initiative, the Government is encouraging legal professionals in Ireland to work in a unified way to develop and progress a strategy to increase trade in legal services to the international sector as the UK leaves the EU.

The Minister for Justice and Equality, Charlie Flanagan TD, said: “The growth in international trade and investment across borders has increased demand for legal advice and representation.

“While the ultimate outcome of the Brexit negotiation process is not yet known, the UK’s withdrawal from the EU will give rise to a changing landscape, including in the field of legal services.

“The initiative being launched today will help put Ireland on a firmer footing to benefit from any opportunities that arise from the UK’s departure from the EU, leaving Ireland the only English speaking common law jurisdiction in the Union.”

Minister Flanagan added: “I intend to brief Cabinet on this initiative and propose the Government’s formal endorsement and support for The Bar of Ireland in bringing this key sectoral initiative to fruition along with the legal community and other stakeholders and with the support of an implementation group”.

We have a look at some of the sports stories that were making headlines in this week in years past

FIVE YEARS AGO (2013)

Galway were facing Sligo in the Connacht FBD League for the first time since suffering championship defeat the previous year.  Kevin Walsh was involved but in his role as Sligo manager while Alan Mulholland was overseeing the Tribesmen’s start to the New Year (courtesy: advertiser.ie)

Joe Canning had a rare winter off and was ready to hit the ground running ahead of the Galway hurlers’ new season.  The maroon and white had reached the 2012 All-Ireland hurling final going down to Kilkenny after a replay and they were hoping for improved fortunes in a year after reaching the decider (courtesy: independent.ie)

Connacht rugby had a new coach after it was announced that former Auckland and Blues coach Pat Lam was heading to Ireland to take over the Western Province.  The 34-times capped Samoan player accepted a two-year deal with the option to extend his stay.  Wonder how he got on? TEN YEARS AGO (2008)

St. Jarlath’s College, Tuam were getting ready to compete for the Hogan Cup and Fr. Olivier Hughes was reminiscing about 30 years with the school and talented footballers he’d seen come through the ranks including the great winning teams of 1994 and 2002 (courtesy: independent.ie)

Johnny O’Connor and Gavin Duffy were the only two Connacht players named in Eddie O’Sullivan’s Irish rugby squad ahead of the Six Nations campaign.  He also named two uncapped Leinster players who would go on to do pretty well for themselves – Cian Healy and Jonathan Sexton (courtesy: bbc.co.uk)

TWENTY YEARS AGO (1998)

Padraig Boyce and Padraig Joyce were sent off as referee Pat Conway booked 10 players in the Connacht FBD League.  John O’Mahony’s reign was only beginning as they took on Leitrim early and secured the result despite being down two players.  (courtesy: irishtimes.com)

galway daily new garda cars

Garda cars could be in for a massive revamp, as an Garda Síochana today released pictures of new electric cars that they are trialing.

The introduction of these new cars – which look slightly criminal – is a significant step towards electric cars becoming the norm.

The BMW i3 cars will be piloted in the coming months as the Gardaí explore the practicalities of using electric vehicles.

If successful, the electric cars could be introduced across the country.

The British police are also currently trialing the exact same model of BMW across Great Britain.

First Irish Geoscience Symposium takes place in Galway

0
galway university galway daily

The first ever Irish Geoscience Early Career Symposium is taking place today, attended by Minister of State Seán Kyne TD.

iGEO2018 is a geoscience event organised for early-career geoscientists.

The new two-day event is designed to cultivate scientific debate and foster the development of early-career geoscientists.

The event secured support from all sectors of the geoscience community and received sponsorship from a wide variety of sources including hydrocarbon and raw materials companies as well as the Petroleum Affairs Division and the Geological Survey of Ireland from the Minister’s Department.

The Minster stated: “The objectives of iGEO2018 fit with my Department supporting the encouragement and development of early-career geoscientists, including geoscientist’s entry into the research, mineral and petroleum sector and therefore the development of capacity in Ireland for all the geoscience sectors.”

A recent report from Indecon International Economic Consultants on the Sectoral Economic Review of the Irish Geoscience Sector, that Minister Kyne launched in November 2017, concluded that the Economic Review puts a value of €3,277m on the overall Economic Impact of the sectoral outputs for 2016, across the areas of Geotourism & Geoheritage, Groundwater, Extractive Industries, Geoscience Research and Geohazards and directly and indirectly employs 24,739 individuals.

“The Geoscience sector has very practical and important applications. The Geological Survey of Ireland, for example, is leading a groundwater and turlough project which is studying and analysing flood problems, including at several dozen sites in Galway, Mayo and Roscommon. This information and analysis is contributing to the OPW’s CFRAM programme which is of huge importance to many communities,” said Minister Kyne.

He said that the inaugural symposium of iGEO2018 offers an organised structured event and wished the attendees success in their chosen geoscience career and said that it was an exciting time to be involved in the sector.

Connacht’s hopes of a home European Challenge Cup quarter-final could be secured Saturday (13th January, 3pm Sixways Stadium) when they face Worcester Warriors in a repeat of their 15-8 win in the Sportsground in October.

Eoghan Masterson’s captained Connacht and struck an early try with Matt Healy also getting over the line in a tight battle that set Kieran Keane’s men up for an assault on the continent as they remain unbeaten.

(Video – Connacht Rugby)

With four wins and 19 points, victory will have the Westerners guaranteed Pool Five winners and will also secure a home quarter-final in April.  And even though they suffered a disappointing 39-13 drubbing to Munster seven days earlier, confidence is high after a good showing over the festive period.

“The excitement in the group around the three inter-pros was massive,” said forward coach Jimmy Duffy to Connacht Rugby’s official website. “As a coach you just try to keep a lid on it and then open the doors and let the players away. They don’t need to be motivated in that period of time. The same applies to Europe for us now.”

The squad looked in a low ebb following a Guinness PRO14 loss to Zebre at the beginning of December but came back with two European wins against Brive, a bonus point victory over Ulster and were just short on New Year’s Day going down 21-18 to Leinster.

Having to rest Irish internationals Bundee Aki, Kieran Marmion and Ultan Dillane made their trip to Thomond Park difficult and the winners, welcoming back Conor Murray and CJ Stander, ran in five tries.

“We were disappointed after the weekend but there was a lot of energy around the dressing room,” added Duffy. “We got the review out of the way and corrected what we felt needed correcting, and then got our direction for this week. We believe we’re in a good space and we’re looking forward to it.”

Worcester Warriors are also wounded following a 41-25 defeat to Bath in the Aviva Premiership.  But Europe can give them an outlet as they currently occupy one of the three best placed runners-up positions and a victory over Connacht could cement a first qualification for the first time since 2009.

Full back Chris Pennell, scrum half Francis Hougaard, centre Ryan Mills and Scottish back row Dave Denton are key threats though Hougaard took a knock against Bath and will be monitored.  England’s Ben Te’o is ruled out with an ankle injury.

Connacht also have an injury concern with James Cannon picking up a shoulder injury against Munster but they could welcome back James Connolly and Cian Kelleher who are both back training after being sidelined.

“At the end of the day you want to get results,” stated Connacht loose forward Jarrad Butler who returned from a knee injury to play a full part in the festive program.  “And it was frustrating against Leinster when we had the opportunities and didn’t quite get there.

“Then against Munster, we knocked off for a little bit and put ourselves in a really tough position. As a group we want to be able to lift it that little bit more and start getting those results and obviously we’re hoping to do that this week.”

Both Keane and Worcester coach Carl Hogg are expected to name full strength squads as they seek momentum before their final round fixtures against French opposition the following week.

Connacht FBD League Preview – MAYO vs GALWAY (Friday, 12th January, 7.30pm MacHale Park)

0

At the second time of asking, Connacht rivals Mayo and Galway will finally lock horns in their first of three scheduled showdowns in 2018.

This contest was meant to be played last Sunday only for the late decision of referee Paddy Neilan to call the game off due to a frozen pitch in Castlebar has meant a five-day delay.

While results in the FBD League will count for little when years are rated based on championship performance, nearly 2,500 supporters did head to MacHale Park on Sunday and a sizeable crowd is expected for the re-fixture.

It’s a chance for rival managers Stephen Rochford and Kevin Walsh to look at options ahead the commencement of the National League on January 28th and their next coming together in Pearse Stadium on February 11th.  They also meet in the Connacht Championship on May 13th.

Retirements, injuries and Corofin’s All-Ireland involvement mean Walsh’s deck is light but they still began with a 1-12 to 0-11 victory over Sligo on Wednesday, 3rd January.  Moycullen’s Sean Kelly got the decisive goal before half-time while Peter Cooke, Frankie Burke and Adrian Varley shared nine points.

It’ll be a different line-up from last year’s All-Ireland quarter-final to Kerry with only Gareth Bradshaw and Paul Conroy named in the original selection.  Sean Andy O’Ceallaigh’s senior debut ended with a black card against Sligo and travelling supporters will be interested to see what impact he can have.

Rory Lavelle might get a start in goal while Eamonn Brannigan, Johnny Duane and Barry McHugh could feature in the attack.

(Video – Midwest Radio)

Mayo’s All-Ireland finalists have just returned from a 10-day holiday in Malaysia so Rochford will be fielding an experimental team.

The postponement has played havoc with both teams’ preparations, especially Mayo who field three times in four days.

They drew with Leitrim on Wednesday (0-13 to 1-10) only being denied by a late Brendan Gallagher goal.

Barry Moran was the only member of the 2017 panel to start though Kevin McLoughlin did come off the bench.  David Clarke and Andy Moran didn’t travel with the squad so could be fresh for a tilt at Galway.

However, Rochford was able bring in other names.  Alan Freeman returned after taking a year out scoring two points, Kevin Keane is back following a cruciate injury after Westport won the All-Ireland intermediate crown, and he also has Neil Douglas and Jason Gibbons to call on.

Both teams are in action again Sunday (Galway vs Leitrim, 2pm Clonbur) so both managers are likely to make full use of their panels.  The result won’t be the most important part though neither will want to lose.  Both managers will hope to identify potential new names that can be part of the year ahead.

Even if Mayo bring in experienced names, this game is too soon and while Galway are also struggling, the momentum gained from an early win over their rivals will be beneficial.  Supporters will be treated to an enjoyable contest with the away side shading it.

CUNNINGHAM SET FOR CORK

0

(Photo – Galway United)

Galway United’s Padraic Cunningham is set to move to current League of Ireland Premier Division champions Cork City according to the Irish Sun newspaper

The Headford native’s time with the Tribesmen looked over after contract discussions with manager Shane Keegan for 2018 didn’t reach agreement but he was on course to represent the county in another code.

Cunningham made his Galway senior football debut last Wednesday (3rd January) against Sligo when he was introduced as a 65th minute substitute for Patrick Sweeney.  And he was named to start at corner forward against Mayo last week before that was called off for a frozen pitch.

His return to Gaelic Football saw him make an immediate impact scoring 2-4 for Headford against Kilconly in their 2-11 to 1-6 North Board under 21 football semi-final replay in December.

Indeed, Cunnigham could finish this weekend with a county title as Headford take on Glenamaddy/Glinsk this Saturday (January 13th, 2pm Tuam Stadium) with An Cheathru Rua waiting to face the winners in the County Final proper.

Also waiting in the wings was Cork City manager John Caulfield who looks to boost his squad ahead of their Champions League assault in the summer.

Caulfield, having initially stayed back to see if Cunnigham would re-sign with Galway United, invited the 21-year-old to visit the club’s facilities on Monday and looks to have convinced him to stick with soccer and join the club.

Cunningham made his Galway United debut in 2014 after signing from Mervue United and made an impression scoring late equalisers last season against St. Patrick’s Athletic (June) and Bohemians (September).

(Video – Galway United TV)

Should Cunnigham, along with Danny Kane from Huddersfield, be announced as a new signing with the Leesiders, he’ll join Colm Horgan who moved south from Galway United before Christmas.

The move is a blow for Keegan’s squad but having resigned already to losing him, it’s Galway football manager Walsh who’ll be disappointed not to avail of his services as he looks to boost his own unit following the retirements of Michael Meehan, Finian Hanley and Gary Sice.

Galway medical students prepare to cure 1,300 teddy bears

Teddy in hospital

With half of Ireland suffering from the Australian flu, teddy bears’ health is often forgotten, or ignored.

All of that will change next week, when over 1,300 sick teddy bears will be diagnosed at the 13th annual Teddy Bear Hospital at NUI Galway.

The event will see over 1,300 sick teddy bears admitted to the hospital, accompanied by their minders, 1,300 primary school children.

The event is organised by the Sláinte Society, the NUI Galway branch of the International Federation of Medical Students Associations, and up to 200 medical and science students will diagnose and treat the teddy bears.

The society hopes to help children aged between three and eight feel more comfortable around doctors and hospitals.

Over the years, children have come along with teddy bears suffering from an imaginative range of illnesses and ailments.

Sally Cahill, a third year medical student at NUI Galway and co-auditor of Sláinte Society, said: “This year we are celebrating the 13th annual Teddy Bear Hospital.

“Over the past couple of years, demand from schools to attend the event has increased and as a result the event has become ever bigger in an attempt to cure all of the sick teddies of Galway.

“We are eagerly awaiting the arrival of our first ‘patients’ on Thursday, 18 January and hope to create a relaxed and enjoyable ‘hospital’ environment for the children.”

This year, 25 local primary schools are participating in the event, equating to over 1,300 children. On arrival at the Teddy Bear Hospital on campus, the children will go to the ‘waiting room’, which contains jugglers and face painters. Then the children and their teddy bears are seen by a team of ‘Teddy Doctors’ and ‘Teddy Nurses’, who will examine them.

The students will have specially designed X-ray and MRI machines on hand, should the teddy bears need them.

Recuperating teddy bears can avail of medical supplies from the Teddy Bear Pharmacy, stocked with healthy fruit from Burkes Fruit and Veg, along with medical supplies sponsored by Matt O’Flaherty Chemist.

The Teddy Bear Hospital at NUI Galway will take place Thursday and Friday, 18 and 19 January.

Galway-led fish farming project to improve efficiency

0
Galway Daily fish farm

A project led by NUI Galway and Athlone Institute of Technology is set to improve production efficiencies and management of farmed fish at several inland freshwater sites.

The project, called ECOAQUA, has received almost €350k in funding from the European Commission.

This project is expected to give us new information, new methods, and increased awareness in this area.

Led by Dr Eoghan Clifford from NUI Galway and Professor Neil Rowan from Athlone Institute of Technology, with support from Bord Iascaigh Mhara’s technical aquaculture team, ECOAQUA will address important needs identified by industry and aquaculture stakeholders including:

  • Analysing the environmental and energy performance of three freshwater aquaculture sites by extensive sampling and remote online monitoring of water parameters.
  • Facilitating the re-use of the treated water, thereby reducing both the volumes of extracted and discharged waters.
  • Enabling the industry to meet stringent environmental regulation while increasing production in a sustainable and cost-effective manner.
  • Piloting technological innovations with industry to ensure the research is easily and rapidly transferrable to the aquaculture sector.
  • Ensuring technological innovations and research results can be leveraged to enable the sustainable growth of this high-potential sector.
  • Enable the industry to leverage the scientific outputs from the project to communicate with government, policymakers and regulators and the public.

Dr Eoghan Clifford from the College of Engineering and Informatics at NUI Galway, said: “Aquaculture is recognised to have the potential to address food security concerns in many countries and offer significant economic benefits.

“Ireland currently ranks as fifth in value and seventh in volume in terms of high value fish species with exports supporting approximately 2,000 jobs.

“However, the sector in Ireland has remained relatively stagnant and has significant potential to grow, develop export markets and create employment in rural areas.

“These developments are strongly aligned with Ireland’s FoodWise2025 policy that seeks to grow food exports by 85% to €19 billion by 2025.

“This research has the potential to introduce innovative monitoring practices, technologies that can enhance the value and sustainability of Irish and European fish stock densities while ensuring the environmental sustainability of the sector.”
