Fresh plans to replace Bohermore pub with new hotel

Galway Daily news Fresh plans to replace Bohermore pub with new hotel

Fresh plans have been submitted for the demolition of Tonery’s Pub in Bohermore, and the construction of a new hotel on the site.

The planning application by Carra Shore Hotel (Galway) Limited calls for the demolition of the pub and garage building on the 0.275ha site.

In its place the developer intends to build a 182 guest bedroom hotel, four storeys in height, with a further two floors below ground.

The planning report submitted with the application states that the hotel will, “provide additional tourist accommodation within Galway City, while also increasing employment opportunities in a highly accessible area in close proximity to public transport”.

No car parking is provided with the development, as it is envisaged that the majority of guests and staff will avail of public transport, the planning report states.

The landscape plans show a central courtyard area with green space, and additional gree areas at the rear of the site.

The city council had previously given the green light in 2021 for pub to be knocked and replaced with a hostel.

This planning application is currently at the pre-validation stage, and does not indicate when a decision is due from the city council.

Three new water bottle filling stations installed in city centre

0
Galway Daily news Three new water bottle filling stations open in Galway City

Three new water bottle filling stations have been installed at locations around Galway City Centre for easy public use.

The new stations are on Churchyard Street, outside Sheridan’s Cheesemongers; Dominick Street, outside the old Canal House; and outside the Eyre Square centre on Eyre Square.

These completely free filling stations join those already present in Millennium Children’s Park, Westside Park and Quincentenial Park.

Tiarnan McCusker, Environmental Awareness Officer with Galway City Council said that they wanted to make it easy for people to fill their water bottles around the city centre.

The filling station is activated by an infra-red sensor, so you simply have to pop your bottle under to get the water going, and remove it to stop.

“We are delighted to partner with Galway City Tidy Towns on this initiative – their members know all too well the problem with plastic bottle litter when they are doing their clean ups.”

“By making water filling stations available in parks, sports facilities and now the city centre, the public can refill and reuse their water bottles in six locations in the city – this will help to keep the city cleaner and reduce plastic waste in our bins.’’

Cllr. Eddie Hoare, Mayor of Galway City added, “Despite the plastic bag levy, Ireland is one of largest producers of plastic waste in the European Union.”

“We now generate around 3 billion plastic bottles a year. A key way to combat this waste is at source, and the new water bottle filling stations around the City are very welcome.”

“Well done to the Environment Department for installing them, and to Galway Tidy Towns for supporting this initiative”.

The water bottle filling stations are decorated with bright imagery which commemorates the sights, sound, and personalities of Galway.

Renowned Street Artist, Johnny Massacre, who sadly passed away in July 2003, is remembered on the water station in Dominick Street.

The Market Street station shows the Galway market in full swing, with the best of crafts and food and on display.

The Eyre Square station shows the Trans Express drummers at the Galway International Arts Festival in 2017 entertaining the crowds beneath them.

Four more people arrested in connection with car park violence

Galway Daily news girl injured by firework

Four more people have been charged in connection with the public violence on the Headford Road, brining the total number of arrests to 19.

Gardaí arrested a further people over the weekend, three adult men and one juvenile.

Three of the men, aged in the 40s, 30s, and 20s, have since been charged and are due to appear before Galway District Court this morning.

A male juvenile has been released pending a referral to the Garda Youth Diversion Programme.

There have now been 19 people arrested in connection with the violent public brawl which occurred in the car park outside the shopping centre on the Headford Road on Sunday, September 10.

Four people were hospitalised as a result of the violent feud, two of them after being run over by a car.

Champions Galway United Dream of European Glory

0

Although Irish clubs have taken some notable scalps in the qualifying rounds of Europe’s major club competitions, runs to the big stage have been, sadly, thin on the ground.

But one club hoping to change those fortunes is Galway United, who might have a chance to do so as early as next season thanks to their exploits in the FAI Cup.

The Tribesmen, who have already wrapped up the League of Ireland First Division title, are in the semi-finals of the FAI Cup – a competition in which the finalists are typically handed a place in the qualifying rounds of the Europa Conference League.

So could Galway United be on the verge of a first continental adventure since the 1990s?

Aiming High

Even just a cursory glance at the Champions League betting odds reveals the size of the task facing John Caulfield and his team if they are to qualify for the premier European competition – as the winner of the League of Ireland Premier Division has a chance to do.

Manchester City (2/1), Bayern Munich (5/1), Real Madrid (15/2) and Arsenal (8/1) are just some of the favourites to lift the trophy, while even 500/1 outsiders like Shakhtar Donetsk, Red Star Belgrade and Braga have a European record that no club in Ireland can match.

But Galway United have taken huge strides forward since the Comer brothers acquired a majority ownership stake in the club back in March 2022, with their investment rewarded by an outstanding effort in the First Division this term.

At the time of writing, Caulfield’s side had won the title with five games to spare – a result of winning 24 of their opening 31 games of the 2023 campaign. A goal difference of +66 is indicative of just how dominant they have been.

And there’s no reason to think they’ll struggle in the top-flight next term, either. UCD and Dundalk have both been swept aside in the FAI Cup – indeed, newcomers to Irish football would not have known which was the Premier Division outfit as Galway racked up 5-1 and 4-0 victories respectively in those two games.

Whether they qualify via the FAI Cup this term or the Premier Division next, Galway United could be set for a European tour in the near future.

Breaking Through

Of course, UEFA’s constant tinkering with their coefficients and qualifying criteria continues to make it very difficult for Irish clubs to book their place in continental competition.

Premier Divisions Shamrock Rovers entered the Champions League in the first round of qualifying, where they lost out to Icelandic side Breidablik.

The 2023/24 Europa League final will be played at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin, but sadly Irish clubs were not handed an entry into qualification for the tournament – instead, Dundalk, Derry City and St Patrick’s Athletic were dropped into the Europa Conference League instead.

Victories for Dundalk and Derry saw them joined by Shamrock in the second qualifying round, with the Candystripes the only team to progress after a 5-4 aggregate win over Finnish club KuPS.

However, Derry City’s dream of qualifying for European competition was ended by Kazakhstan Premier Division side Tobol after a cruel penalty shootout defeat.

Dreams of emulating the 2011 era Shamrock Rovers – the first Irish team to make it to a continental competition proper – were crushed. So can Galway United go one better in the near future and qualify for the Champions League or Conference League?

Funding to support climate action in Galway City & County

0
Galway Daily news Community Climate Action public information evenings in Galway City

Almost €3 million in funding has been announced to support climate action in the north-west region over the next six years.

The €2.97 million has been allocated for the Atlantic Seaboard North CARO which incorporates Galway, Mayo, Sligo, and Donegal.

The Climate Action Regional Offices were established in 2018 to support local government to respond and adapt to climate change.

They coordinate national and local climate policy and work to ensure there is a more joined-up approach to responding to the climate crisis at a regional level.

Minister for the Environment Eamon Ryan welcomed the continued engagement with the CAROs and the local authorities.

“Over the previous five years, the CAROs have been instrumental in helping local authorities to respond to climate challenges, particularly on adaptation, and have become a really valued resource for the local authorities within their region.”

“The Department will work closely with the CAROs over the coming years to ensure the work continues to support the delivery of climate actions at a local level.”

“The climate is changing more quickly and unpredictably than we can keep up with. We can see the impacts all around us — flooding, heatwaves, droughts.”

“Climate change is a serious threat to Ireland and its people. We need to talk about these problems and work together to prepare for the changes that are coming.”

“By taking local climate action and working with local government, we’re creating a better Ireland,” the Minister said.

Welcoming the new agreement, the Chair of the CCMA Climate Action, Transport, Circular Economy and Networks Committee, John McLaughlin said, “The Climate Action Regional Offices have been instrumental in supporting the local government sector in our ambition to lead and deliver climate action across Ireland.”

“Since they were established, the CAROs have provided significant strategic assistance to all 31 local authorities, which has enabled them to drive climate action in their own operations, counties and cities, and communities.”

Under the new agreement, the four CAROs will continue to support local authorities and will have a particular focus on supporting local authorities with their Local Authority Climate Action Plans.

This Culture Night Galway County Council proudly presents Take a Walk with Crom, an   intimate Macnas spectacle that will meander through the medieval streets of Athenry.

Watch the wise and magnificent Crom lurk around Athenry town centre alongside Macnas performers, stilt  walkers and drummers who promise to entertain and enthrall.

Crom emerged from the 2014 Macnas production Symphony for the Restless and has wandered the streets of Galway City, Dublin City and Ballina.

‘Raging, roaring, grieving; staggering, rootless out of proportion; loose wild and weary in this world. The giant, Crom is  tormented by his own illusion and delusions. He is intoxicated with rage, he is disorientated, restless, and lawless…’

Macnas is an award-winning internationally acclaimed performance company from Galway.  Productions are immersive and spectacular, and its repertoire includes parades, theatre  shows, installations, film and performance art.

Macnas makes transformative immersive  work, collaborating with artists, audiences and communities, nationally and internationally.

In 2020 Macnas relocated their sculpture workshop to 5km outside of Athenry and have  been working with local schools and getting to know the area.

Macnas artist Lisa Sweeney  worked with 6th class students at Scoil Croí Naofa to create nests and feathers that were part of Con Mór, The Giant in 2023.

In the past, Macnas performed many times during the  Athenry Medieval Festival. Now, for the first time since the mid-90’s, Macnas will take to  the streets of Athenry to delight audiences of all ages.

“We are delighted to work with Macnas in an outdoor setting and as its home to the Macnas workshop, Athenry presents as  a perfect venue”, says Sharon O’Grady, Galway County Arts Officer.

Before Take a Walk with Crom, come to Athenry to enjoy other Culture Night events at  Skylark, Athenry Arts & Heritage Centre and walk around the town to experience ‘one of the best-preserved medieval towns in Ireland’.

Stay afterwards to witness a spectacular   fireworks display sponsored by Londis Athenry in the park.

The Best Place to Compare Home Insurance in Ireland

0
galway daily news

More and more people in Ireland are choosing to compare home insurance policies each year in an attempt to make savings as the cost of living continues to rise.

Home insurance premiums have soared by nearly 22 percent over the past year, according to data from the CSO in the summer.

That’s why choosing the best insurance provider with the most competitive rates is crucial – but with so many providers out there, finding the cheapest premium can often feel like a minefield.

Of course, it is technically possible to compare home insurance providers by manually searching the internet. But that’s needlessly time-consuming, and you are likely to miss a few providers along the way.

So to save you from doing things the hard way, Ireland’s most trusted home insurance comparison site Compare Insurance Ireland provides free, impartial information which could save you hundreds per year.

The Irish website contains extensive, concise guides on home insurance (as well as all other types of insurance), explaining what each provider offers as well as comparing their pricing for two sample homes.

They make it simple to compare home insurance rates, explaining the different types of policies that are available, the differences between them, and how each company differs in what it has to offer.

Once you have reviewed this information, you can then simply enter the details of your home for free quotes from all major insurance providers, allowing you to make an informed decision based on facts and the latest rates.

Experts at Compare Insurance recommend reviewing your home insurance policy each year when the annual premium is due, instead of renewing the cover automatically.

This is because companies don’t always offer loyalty discounts, and each provider’s premiums change from time to time.

It is also important to ensure that you have not over or under insured your home, so that you have the cover you need without paying more than necessary.

Connacht Rugby have announced that Galway’s Croí have been chosen as their official charity partner for the 2023/24 season.

The heart and stroke charity will work with Connacht Rugby to promote healthy and active lifestyles, and highlight the services available here and nationwide.

The announcement came during World Heart Month with a number of events planned over the coming weeks.

Mark O’Donnell, Croí’s Head of Foundation & Chief Operations Officer said, “We’re absolutely delighted to be the Official Charity Partner for Connacht Rugby for the upcoming season.”

“Croí and Connacht Rugby have a lot of shared purpose and values, and while elements of our work now have a national focus, our home is Connacht and the footprint of our many regional activities very much aligns with the province.”

“There’s been great commitment, energy and enthusiasm from both teams in forming the partnership and we are really looking forward to a great year ahead with many exciting initiatives planned.”

Croí’s activities for World Heart Month culminate in Heartfest, a free community event In Croí House, on Thursday, September 28, which Connacht Rugby will be supporting.

Preparations are also well underway for the annual Croí Night Run, which takes place in Salthill on Friday, October 13, with registration now open at www.croi.ie/nightrun.

Established in 1985, Croí is a registered Irish Heart and Stroke Charity.  Croí’s aim is to lead the fight against heart disease and stroke, with a particular focus on serving and supporting communities across the West of Ireland.

Croí is based in the Croí Heart & Stroke Centre, Galway, which was opened in 2012 and is a leading centre for heart disease and stroke prevention, research, education, patient support and rehabilitation.

Croí’s work is underpinned by three main pillars, namely: Croí in the Community, Specialist Health Programmes and Advocacy.

hilip Patterson, Head of Commercial & Marketing at Connacht Rugby said, “Joining forces with Croí is the perfect charity collaboration for us.”

“When they told us about their mission to encourage a healthy and active lifestyle for men and women of all ages in the West of Ireland, we knew of the value that Connacht Rugby as an organisation could add to their goals.”

“We support thousands of rugby players in the five counties of Connacht and, similar to Croí, it’s our mission to promote an active lifestyle by getting as many people as active as possible through rugby.”

“We look forward to working with Croí in the year ahead to achieve both those goals. We’d also encourage everyone to get involved with the numerous activities Croí have planned in the weeks and months ahead, and to check both the Connacht Rugby and Croí websites for more information.”

Ros na Rún, meaning the valley or village of secrets, will share many of its production secrets with visitors, giving fans a sneak peak of what it’s like to be in Tigh Thaidhg, Berni’s Cúl Chaint Café and Gaudi’s where Bobbi Lee works. There will also be a visit to Máire’s B&B, Berni’s Apartment and Siopa XL Ros na Rún.

Learning how a TV Drama series is created, written, filmed,  edited and produced will be at the core of the experience.

This will form part of a live Q&A session with members of the production team who’ll take to the high stools of Tigh Thaidhg to share their production secrets which they hope will inspire future actors, writers, crew, TV Directors and Producers.

Marion Ní Loingsigh, series producer, says “We’re very excited at Ros na Rún to be part of the prestigious Culture Night Programme and it’s our first time to participate and open our TV set to Culture Night Fans.”

“The Irish language is at the soul of Ros na Rún as is acting and creative writing all of which embellish the culture of rural Gaeltacht life.”

“Sharing our behind the scenes tour of this very unique TV set which combines two working studios is exciting for us. We’ve come along way and want to share our high quality production values with our loyal fans and Culture Night enthusiasts.”

Ros na Rún now in its 28th season is Ireland’s only rural based TV drama series. The TG4 Irish language drama is the only working and purpose built television set on Ireland’s Wild Atlantic Way.

It is also the biggest artistic production outside of Dublin employing close on 180 people during its production season.
