Over 950 student volunteers have been presented with the ALIVE Certificate for Volunteering by NUI Galway President, Professor Ciarán Ó hÓgartaigh.

The ceremony was attended by Galway City Mayor, Councillor Pearce Flannery.

NUI Galway students volunteered with a variety of local and national organisations throughout the year including Conservation Volunteers Galway, Galway Autism Partnership, Galway Civil Defence, and Croí to name a few.

Volunteers have also brought experiments to Galway schools through a wide range of science outreach workshops and participated in reading and mentoring through school homework clubs.

Ceremony guest, Robert Farrell, Head of Direct in Aviva which employs more than 350 people in Galway, said: “Caring more for the communities in which we live, is part of our DNA in Aviva Ireland.

“We carefully encourage the instinctive generosity of our employees, encouraging them to give of their time, skills and passion to their local communities.

“To facilitate this, we give them three days paid leave to volunteer for their local charities and we match the funds they raise for local causes. We commend the work of NUI Galway in promoting volunteerism amongst the student body.”

ALIVE is the student volunteering programme at NUI Galway and students are awarded Certificates to acknowledge their contribution to campus programmes and local and international community volunteering.

The ceremony is an annual event to encourage volunteering and to thank all the community partners for hosting student volunteers. This year the ALIVE programme worked with higher education institutions across Ireland to successfully launch StudentVolunteer.ie a national platform to match students to non-profits.

This year’s event is to highlight corporate social responsibility as employee’s growth and development through volunteering advance leadership skills and team building. Lorraine Tansey, Student Volunteer Coordinator at NUI Galway, said: “As future professionals, students are well placed to learn how volunteerism in their future is an opportunity company’s embrace.”

Annelise Garrison, NUI Galway student who volunteers with the Irish Cancer Society Charity Shop and the Galway Pride Festival, said: “By volunteering, I helped create a safe place for people to be themselves and celebrate their diversity.”

Darragh Doyle, NUI Galway student with Enable Ireland learned about sustainable fundraising and said, “We need volunteering to help raise the much needed funds so that these important services can continue. We also need awareness for the extent of the work that Enable Ireland provide.”

Galway’s 4-9 to 1-10 victory over Tipperary last Saturday (14th April) secured them a place in the All-Ireland Minor Camogie Final and a meeting with Cork on April 28th.

Mairead Dillon struck all four goals as the Tribesgirls kept their opponents at bay and their title defence on track.  Should they prevail over the Rebelettes, it will be the first time Galway have successfully retained this title.

For manager Lorraine Larkin, she has led Galway to seven successive All-Ireland Finals including winning the 2015 under 16 title and the 2017 minor crown.  Afterwards, she spoke to us and Dermot Flaherty Video.

All-Ireland Minor Camogie Semi-Final – Saturday, 14th April

Galway 4-9 Tipperary 1-10

Darren Kelly in Banagher

There were no trophies handed out but Galway would have taken satisfaction from this All-Ireland minor camogie semi-final thanks to Mairead Dillon scoring four goals.  It secured the defending champions a rematch with Cork on April 28th after falling to the Rebelettes in the group stages.

Caoimhe Perdue converted a Tipperary free after just 51 seconds but Galway’s threat was evident in their first meaningful attack.  Chloe Reilly set off down the left flank and just when the rearguard was about to swallow her up, she spotted Dillon who made no mistake with the first goal.

Reilly added a point but on six minutes, Casey Hennessy got within range before striking Tipperary’s goal.  Katie Mannion responded for Galway before Rosanna O’Donnell levelled at 1-2 apiece.  However, the maroon and white started to take control of proceedings.

Niamh Horan sent over three placed balls to make it 1-5 to 1-2 on 22 minutes but Galway should have done better.  However,  Teegan Canning whipped in a ball from the left in injury time and Dillon was perfectly placed for Galway’s second goal and interval advantage was 2-5 to 1-3.

Perdue registered a 45 upon the resumption before Hennessy put three between them. And the teams shared the next four points making it 2-7 to 1-7 on the three-quarter mark.  There was no doubt that the next goal was going to win this match and on 47 minutes, Dillon secured her hat-trick.

Dillon waited before pulling first time rifling a strike to the top corner.  Tipperary replied with a Perdue point but Galway scented the finish line.  And when Sarah Healy’s long free on 55 minutes was taken by Siobhan McGrath, the Sarsfields forward knew Dillon’s location for the fourth goal.

At 4-9 to 1-8, the contest was over though Tipperary did have a couple of late scores through Perdue and Hennessy.  Galway were unfortunate to lose Kate Moran to a second yellow in injury time but Lorraine Larkin now has led Galway to seven All-Ireland Finals.

Galway: Sarah Healy; Kate Moran, Leah Burke, Erica Leslie; Pearl Finnerty, Alannah Kelly, Kate Screene; Niamh Horan (0-3, two 45s, one free), Teegan Canning; Katie Mannion (0-1), Ciara Helebert, Mairead Dillon (4-1); Niamh Niland (0-3, two frees), Siobhan McGrath, Chloe Reilly (0-1).  Subs used: Rachel Hanniffy for Canning (37 mins), Rachel Murray for Horan (57 mins), Sinead Cannon for Leslie (60 mins).

The Minister for Housing, Planning and Local Government Eoghan Murphy sat down with teams from Galway Simon Community and COPE Galway last week, as part of the visit by the Taoiseach and four Ministers in Galway City.

Among the topics discussed were the controversial Project Ireland 2040 plan, affordable housing and HAP.

Karen Golden, CEO of Galway Simon Community said the visit was a welcome one.

“We were really delighted to welcome the Minister to our new emergency accommodation service for an impromptu meeting.

“The teams from both Galway Simon and COPE sat down with the Minister and we had a very open conversation about the homelessness crisis in Galway.

“We were able to discuss some of the proposed projects for Galway in the Project Ireland 2040 Plan and we put key questions to the Minister around the provision of social and affordable housing, as well as the extension of the Homeless HAP Scheme to Galway.

“We would like to extend our thanks to the Minister for accepting our invitation on the day to visit our service and for taking on board the feedback and questions from both teams in an open way,” she said.

Karen went on to say the visit allowed the Minister to get first-hand accounts of the issues that are faced locally and said that the meeting was a huge opportunity for both Galway Simon Community and COPE Galway to come together to advocate for those experiencing homelessness in Galway.

Minister Murphy has undertaken to respond to the charities on some of the key queries raised during the meeting and advised that he will be following up on key areas discussed.

New report singles out former FF European Commissioner – MEP

0
GALWAY daily matt carthy

Sinn Féin MEP Matt Carthy has commented on a new Corporate Europe Observatory report which exposes the links between the European Commission and the finance industry.

The report singles out former Fianna Fáil minster and European Commissioner Charlie McCreevy for specific criticism.

Matt Carthy said that the fact that a Fianna Fáil politician has been singled out as one of the worst offenders when it comes to conflicts of interest and the financial industry’s influence on public policy is an indictment of the party’s approach to these issues.

He also said that it reflects a deeply embedded and deeply problematic culture in the EU institutions which ‘needs to end’.

The report on revolving doors at DG FISMA was published by the Corporate Europe Observatory yesterday.

The Midlands North West MEP said: “This report examines the Commission’s finance unit during the aftermath of the financial crisis, from 2008 until 2017, and shows an appalling level of influence by the finance lobby on European policy regarding financial stability.

“Four out of five of the former directors of DG FISMA during this period left the Commission only to go on to work directly in the finance industry or else for one of the industry’s lobby groups. Two out of the three of the Commissioners with responsibility for finance, and one of the three heads of unit for DG FISMA, did the same.

“Fianna Fáil’s Charlie McCreevy, who was Commissioner from 2004-2010 during a period of financial deregulation and the consequent financial crisis, is singled out for special mention in the report as the first former Commissioner to be ‘given the red light’ by the Commission when he tried to set up a bank shortly after leaving his post.

“The Commission insisted McCreevy observe the cooling-off period before taking his proposed role at NBNK investments as the links between his role in office and the new bank were so extremely stark that this brazen request was turned down – for the first time in history. But the Commission at the same time gave the green light to McGreevy to join the board of Ryanair, on which he still sits, immediately after leaving office and in spite of the fact that he had often dealt with Ryanair issues as Commissioner.

“Then just a week after the end of his 12-month cooling-off period, McCreevy joined the Bank of New York Mellon. As Commissioner, McGreevy had direct responsibility for deregulating the derivatives industry and he joined the derivatives trading unit of BNY Mellon. He also joined other financial firms Sentenial, World Spreads and Celsius Funds.”

CAMOGIE: (Preview) – GALWAY vs TIPPERARY (Saturday, 2.30pm Banagher)

Recent rivals Galway and Tipperary go head-to-head today in the All-Ireland Minor Camogie Semi-Final as the Tribesgirls aim to keep their title defence intact.

Despite two losses during the group stages, Lorraine Larkin’s charges finished second in Group One and now meet the Premier County who boast an impressive track record against Galway.

Tipperary emerged 4-9 to 2-6 winners after a replay in the 2016 decider and also picked up two wins at under 16 level.  But this is a different group of players representing the maroon and white and Galway have held the upper hand since.

Indeed, Galway are three-in-a-row winners at under 16 level and followed through with an impressive thumping of Clare in last year’s minor final.  And with Sarsfields and Athenry involved in delayed All-Ireland club camogie finals last month, Larkin had to deal with a limited deck.

Their 0-13 to 1-8 loss to Kilkenny the first day but Galway under pressure but they replied with a 2-12 to 1-4 victory over Wexford.  However, after coming up short in Cork (1-11 to 0-12), they needed a big result in their final group game.

And they didn’t disappoint beating Dublin 4-8 to 0-3 to qualify in second place on scoring difference.

Tipperary also lost their opening encounter to Waterford (3-11 to 3-7) but bounced back taking victories against Limerick, Clare and Offaly.  And even though Cian Tracey’s team may be slight underdogs, they know they can match their opponents.

https://www.facebook.com/galway.camogie.7/photos/a.592705577445187.1073741826.592705510778527/1618646644851070/?type=3&theater

Galway will hope their key players click.  St. Thomas’ Sarah Healy was Galway senior goalkeeper last year and should take her place between the sticks.

Leah Burke, Alannah Kelly and Kate Screen are among the defence while Niamh Horan and Tegan Canning are expected to be partners in midfield.   And Galway’s dangerous inside line of Niamh Niland, Siobhan McGrath and Chloe Quinn Reilly are capable of doing serious damage on their day.

Galway teams have timed their run the last couple of seasons and this current crop are no different.  They were the top team in under 16 and with all players available, they’ll look to finish strongly again.  Tipperary won’t fear the challenge but Galway should be back in an All-Ireland Final this evening.

Verdict: Galway

The other semi-final also takes place today in Ballyagran as undefeated Cork meet Munster rivals Clare.  That game also throws-in at 2.30pm.

13th annual Mussel Festival taking place this upcoming May Bank Holiday Weekend

0
Mussel Festival

This upcoming May Bank Holiday Weekend is set to hold a tantalising festival filled to the brim with mussels and much more fishy delights as the annual Connemara Mussel Festival takes place from the 4th – 6th of May in Tullycross, Renvyle, Connemara as part of the Region of Gastronomy 2018 event calendar.

The Connemara Mussel Festival is a celebration of the people, food, culture and heritage of north-west Connemara.

The festival, on the Wild Atlantic Way, is a feast for the senses for locals and visitors: taste beautifully cooked local produce, see unparalleled views of the magnificent Connemara landscape: hear sounds of music, dancing, talks and theatre; feel the atmosphere and most of all, enjoy the experience.

The idea for the Connemara Mussel Festival which is to celebrate it’s 13th year this year began in Paddy Coyne’s Pub,

We were sitting is St Ann’s, in Paddy Coyne’s Pub, one evening in the spring. The fire was lit, and a few pints had been pulled. One of the local lads walked in with a bucket. He had been out on the strand at spring-tide that day, and had a feed of shellfish to show for it. ‘Any chance of a feed,’ he said presenting the pail of shellfish. So we threw on a feed in the kitchen and with a splash of garlic, olive oil and cream, had a fine feast. A session started up and more joined in as the craic built. It was one of those nights where you don’t expect anything to happen, and next you know, the session is in full swing!”

Food lovers are in for a real treat this May Bank Holiday weekend with some of the country’s top celebrity chefs providing live cooking demonstrations.

Over the weekend some of the finest chefs in the country will showcase their culinary skills in a variety of demonstrations. There will also be cookery competitions for amateurs, celebrities and student chefs from GMIT.

The theme for this year’s festival is ‘A Taste of the Atlantic’, with Jacinta Dalton, Fáilte Ireland Food Ambassador, Lecturer at College of Tourism & Arts, GMIT will be hosting a workshop for children and there will be a series of walks and talks focusing on the coastal community off the beautiful Renvyle Peninsula which offers spectacular views of the Hills and coast of Connemara in Galway.

The Connemara Mussel Festival aims to highlight the wealth of top quality seafood available on their shores and showcase some of the finest mussels as well as a selection of other fishy delights.

All are welcome to come and enjoy the treasure trove of local produce which demonstrates Connemara’s growing reputation as an exciting food destination.

AIRTRICITY LEAGUE: (Match Report) – GALWAY UNITED 4-1 WEXFORD FC

After a barren spell without scoring and staring a potential drop to the bottom half of the First Division, Galway United stormed back into life.

Aaron Dobbs gave the visitors a first half advantage and they came close to a second after the break.  But when Danny Furlong broke the Galway United deadlock on 62 minutes, there was no looking back for Shane Keegan’s men.

Alan Murphy equaled Paul ‘Ski’ McGee’s all-time record of 74 goals from the penalty spot and Carlton Ubaezuonu struck a screamer as Galway United hit three goals in eight minutes.  And Eoin McCormack capped off his good night getting the fourth two minutes from time.

Dobbs got on the end of a Dean Kelly free kick on the half hour mark to give the South East team an interval advantage.

Even though Wexford were creating chances, it was their first clear cut opportunity and Dobbs, who was ever threatening, didn’t make any mistake.

Furlong had Galway’s first chance on three minutes but just shot over.  And Wexford keeper Kelan Gaffney was also on hand to deny to further efforts from Murphy and Stephen Walsh.

Dobbs, on loan from Shamrock Rovers, eventually made Galway’s wastefulness count when he found the net but home fans felt aggrieved as they felt referee Paula Brady should have awarded Murphy a free instead of Kelly.

https://twitter.com/morganobrienart/status/984827546381553665

Mark Slater came close to giving Wexford a second goal before Galway finally broke down their opponents and got on level terms.  Stephen Kenny sent in the cross from Gary Shanahan’s pass and Furlong toe poked to the net to make it 1-1.

Wexford were struggling and the tide completely turned four minutes later.  McCormack was fouled in the box.  Ross Kenny received his marching orders for a professional foul.  And even though McCormack looked anxious to take the spot kick, Murphy joined the record books converting the penalty.

With their opponents on the back foot, United didn’t relent and when substitute Ubasezuonu, who was causing problems upon his introduction, drove down the middle before rattling a fierce strike off the underside of the crossbar, home fans knew their team had finally come good.

Down to 10 men, the Slaneysiders were just holding on and eventually conceded the fourth.  Shanahan sent in the cross and McCormack’s performance was rewarded with a deserving goal.  After looking in serious trouble at half-time, Galway United ran out comfortable winners.

They still sit in fifth place, four points behind UCD before two potential big games next weekend against Shelbourne and UCD.  If they come out with four points from those two encounters, they’ll be right back in the mix.

PRO14 RUGBY: (Match Report) – GLASGOW 35-22 CONNACHT

0
Galway Daily sport Four Connacht players named for Ireland ‘A’ Match Day Squad

Connacht rallied in the second half but paid the price for a poor opening 40 minutes that saw them fall to another defeat in their penultimate Guinness PRO14 game.

After battling for a Champions Cup spot, five consecutive defeats have seen Kieran Keane’s men limp towards the finish as Glasgow confirmed their position as Conference A winners.

Finlay Bealham gave Connacht the perfect start inside two minutes when he got in for a try but by the fourth minute, their lead was gone.

Johnny Gray and DTH Van Der Merwe did the work that allowed Stuart Hogg in for Glasgow’s first before Peter Horne converted making it 7-5 in Glasgow’s favour.

Three further penalties from the Glasgow out half put 11 points between the teams before Jack Carty got his first on 25 minutes leaving it 16-8.

However, Glasgow removed any doubts about the result when they broke the tackle oon 27 minutes before Alex Dunbar got in for the second try.

And on the stroke of half-time, referee Frank Murphy, a former Connacht player, gave Fraser Brown the touchdown.  Horne converted both times and Glasgow led 30-8 at half-time.

A mauling looked Connacht’s way and it didn’t get any better three minutes after the restart.  Henry Pyrgos was the finisher after Dunbar and Matt Fagerson set him up.  Horne’s completely miskicked the conversion but the bonus point was secured at 35-8.

Glasgow eased up as Connacht tried to make inroads and put some respectability on the scoreboard.  They were held up for a driving maul 10 minutes later but eventually a second try came Connacht’s way.

Stacey Ili, who replaced the injured Matt Healy before half-time, set up Caolin Blade who got over the line.  Carty added the two points and the deficit was 20.

But in the final five minutes after Rob Harley became Glasgow’s second yellow card (Alex Allan was removed for 10 minutes earlier), further pressure from the visitors earned a penalty try leaving them one score short of two bonus points.

But despite their valiant efforts to reduce arrears in the second half, the damage was done and Connacht will aim to beat Leinster in two weeks’ time to finish their disappointing campaign on a positive note.

Glasgow Warriors: Stuart Hogg (5 – try); Tommy Seymour, Alex Dunbar (5 – try), Sam Johnson, DTH Van der Merwe; Pete Horne (15 – three penalties, three conversions), Henry Pygros (5 – try); Alex Allan, Fraser Brown (5 – try), Zander Fagerson; Scott Cummings, Jonny Gray; Rob Harley, Callum Gibbins, Matt Fagerson.

Connacht: Darragh Leader; Niyi Adeolokun, Bundee Aki, Peter Robb, Matt Healy; Jack Carty (5 – penalty, conversion), Kieran Marmion; Denis Buckley, Tom McCartney, Finlay Bealham (5 – try); Ultan Dillane, Quinn Roux; Eoghan Masterson, Jarrad Butler, Eoin McKeon.  Other Scorers: Caolin Blade (5 – try), PENALTY TRY.

Galway United run the risk of dropping to sixth in the Airtricity League First Division after they found themselves a goal down at half-time in Eamonn Deacy Park.

Aaron Dobbs got on the end of a Dean Kelly free kick on the half hour mark to give the South East team an interval advantage.

Even though Wexford were creating chances, it was their first clear cut opportunity and Dobbs, who was ever threatening, didn’t make any mistake.

Danny Furlong had Galway’s first chance on three minutes but just shot over.  And Wexford keeper Kelan Gaffney was also on hand to deny to further efforts from Alan Murphy and Stephen Walsh.

Dobbs, on loan from Shamrock Rovers, eventually made Galway’s wastefulness count when he found the net but home fans felt aggrieved as they felt referee Paula Brady should have awarded Murphy a free instead of Kelly.

Should Shane Keegan’s former team, who showed up in Galway with striker Furlong’s picture on their bus, hold out, it will see United concede further ground ahead of two expected difficult away matches next week against Shelbourne and Finn Harps.

PRO14 RUGBY: (Half-Time) – GLASGOW 30-8 CONNACHT

Connacht’s season isn’t finishing any better than the last few weeks as they already looked beaten in Scotstoun Stadium in their penultimate Guinness PRO14 tie.

Three tries look set to guarantee the hosts the victory and also a home semi-final thanks to Stuart Hogg, Alex Dunbar and Fraser Brown.

Kieran Keane’s men got off to a fantastic start and were over in less than two minutes.  Finlay Bealham finished for the try that looked set to lift the doom after last week’s heavy loss to Ospreys.

But by the fourth minute, Glasgow Warriors were ahead.  Johnny Gray and DTH Van Der Merwe did the work before Hogg got the try.  Pete Horne made the conversion count.

Horne has been accurate during the first 40 minutes and added three penalties to leave it 16-5 entering the second quarter before Jack Carty responded with a Connacht three-pointer.

But Glasgow’s pressure eventually told.  The broke the tackle that allowed Dunbar get in for their second try on 27 minutes and Horne made it 23-8.

Former Connacht player Frank Murphy was assigned refereeing duties and his old loyalties to the province hasn’t affected his judgment.  After taking a couple of seconds in injury time, he gave Brown the third touchdown.  Horne added again and it’s looking like another long night for Connacht.

Glasgow Warriors: Stuart Hogg (5 – try); Tommy Seymour, Alex Dunbar (5 – try), Sam Johnson, DTH Van der Merwe; Pete Horne (15 – three penalties, three conversions), Henry Pygros; Alex Allan, Fraser Brown (5 – try), Zander Fagerson; Scott Cummings, Jonny Gray; Rob Harley, Callum Gibbins, Matt Fagerson.

Connacht: Darragh Leader; Niyi Adeolokun, Bundee Aki, Peter Robb, Matt Healy; Jack Carty (3 – penalty), Kieran Marmion; Denis Buckley, Tom McCartney, Finlay Bealham (5 – try); Ultan Dillane, Quinn Roux; Eoghan Masterson, Jarrad Butler, Eoin McKeon.

Healthcare entrepreneurs to compete for €4 million at Galway tournament

0

30 healthcare entrepreneurs from around Europe will be in Galway next week competing for €4 million in the final stage of the Wild Card: At The Edge competition.

They’re competing for one of two grants of €2 million as well as mentorship, business and research support, and the use of high-end facilities.

The tournament is being hosted by EIT Health, a European body to promote innovation, together with local medtech companies BioInnovate and BioExcel.

Dr. Paul Anglim, Strategic Development Lead at BioInnovate says the Wild Card tournament could benefit medtech and healthcare businesses in Galway.

“The city is internationally recognised as a centre for medtech and healthcare, and At The Edge will allow the local business and science community to show of their expertise to some of Europe’s most promising healthcare innovators.

“In the future, this could lead to deeper collaboration between Galway and European healthcare leaders.”

CEO of EIT Health Jan-Phillip Beck said that Galway was chosen over other European cities due to its leading position in healthcare research and innovation.

According to EIT, as a medtech hub Galway could also be chosen as the development site for one or both of the winning solutions.

Wild Card: At The Edge is the inaugural event of an EU-funded initiative to tackle the issues of data storage and antibiotic resistance.

In the SMART HEALTH challenge entrepreneurs must devise a concept which uses artificial intelligence to deliver more personalised healthcare solutions and to improve overall patient care.

While the FIGHT BACK challenge is about finding new solutions to antibiotic resistance for European healthcare.

The entrants will be split into teams and set a series of tasks throughout the week to develop an idea for a product or solution in one of these areas to a board of judges from EIT Health.

Jan-Phillip Beck is confident the tournament will produce ideas and solutions of great benefit to healthcare.

“By the end of the week, we are confident that we’ll have some game-changing ideas that will really transform the face of European health.”

Wild Card: At The Edge will take place from Monday to Friday next week, the 16-20 April, at several locations around the city including NUI Galway, the Portershed workspace, and the Salthill Hotel.

Would you like to be this year’s Galway Rose Representative?

Galway Rose Selection

Have you ever considered entering the selection to be the Galway representative for the Rose of Tralee Competition which takes place every August?

Of course it has been every young girls dream once upon a time to be a part of the Rose of Tralee and although that fantasy may have left some, the longing to be that girl on the stage often stays with most girls up to a certain point.

I know myself growing up in the Kingdom, the county that holds this event each year, meant that we were enthralled and fascinated at the idea of being “one of those girls”. More often than not we were glued to the couch as we watched each one of these girls in awe, the talent, the beauty and the sheer excitement they all held at being part of such an occasion.

Maybe it was even more special for us because we grew up in the county that was holding the competitions. That being said I remember all of us saying at one point or another – “I will be the next Rose.”

We often chatted about the competition and I remember from a young age I had a plan. I knew that if I were ever taking part in the competition I would wear a blue dress walking out onto the stage. I had everything planned in my head as I dreamed about the special night that it would be. I knew well that I didn’t have any special talents, I can’t sing and I have two left feet but I knew that instrument was my ability to talk. I was once told that I could talk the hind legs off a donkey. So if I were ever to run for the Rose competition I would try and use my ability to chat to my advantage.

That being said I won’t be running for the Rose competition this year but the opportunity is there for young Galway Girls to put yourself forward and to enjoy the experience of being the next Galway Representative at the Rose of Tralee Competition 2018.

If anyone is interested in taking part in the selection process for the Galway Rose Competition 2018, you can pop into O’ Connells Bar on Eyre Square tomorrow evening, Saturday April 14th @8.30pm.

A team will be there to tell you about the upcoming 2018 Galway Rose Selection or you can apply online at www.roseoftralee.ie/apply

Don’t be afraid to show your faces in O’Connells tomorrow night – where the craic will be had if nothing else.

Ar smaoinigh tú riamh do chois a sháigh isteach san iomaíocht agus an bhfuil suim agat a bheith mar Rós na Gaillimhe i mbliana?

Gan dabht is brionglóid é a bhíonn ag gach chailín nuair a bhíonn siad óg agus cé go n-imíonn an aisling ó daoine áirithe fanann sí le chuid mhaith do na chailíní.

Tá a fhios agam féin nuair a bhíos óg ag fás aníos sa Ríocht, áit a mbíonn an comórtas nó an Féile ar siúl, bhíomar greamaithe sa tolg agus sin ag breathnú ar na chailíní ar fad a bhí san iomaíocht.

B’fhéidir go raibh sé níos speisialta de bharr go rabhamar ag fás aníos sa chontae a raibh an comórtas bunaithe ach fós féin is cuimhin liom go maith go ndúramar ar fad – “Mise a bheidh mar an chéad Rós eile.”

Do bhíodh mór chuid do chaint ar siúl againn faoin comórtas agus is cuimhin liom féin gur theastaigh uaim gúna gorm a chaitheamh agus mé ag siúl amach ar an stáitse. Bhí gach aon ní curtha le chéile agam, agus mé ag taibhreamh ar an oíche speisialta a bheadh ann. Bhí fios maith agam ná raibh aon bua speisialta agam, mar nílim ábalta canadh agus tá dhá chois clé agam ach do bhí a fhios agam an t-aon rud a bhí mar uirlis agam ná mo bhua cainte. Dúradh liom uair amháin go mbeinn ábalta labhairt le duine ar bith de bharr an fuinneamh a bhí agam agus an stíl cainte a bhí agam. B’shin é an rud a mbainfinn úsáid as dá ritheann don féile Rós sa todhcaí.

É sin ráite nílim chun rith i mbliana ach tá an deis ann daoibhse, cailíní óg na Gaillimhe bhur chos a chuir isteach san iomaíocht agus seans den chéad scoth é bheith mar ionadaíocht don Chontae i comórtas Féile Rós Thrá Lí 2018.

Má tá suim ag duine ar bith agaibh a bheith rannpháirteach nó chuir isteach ar an comórtas Rós na Gaillimhe 2018, is féidir buaileadh isteach go tigh tabhairne O Connell’s ar an Fhaiche Mór an Satharn seo 14ú ag a 8.30i.n.

Beidh foireann ann chun eolas a thabhairt daoibh faoi Roghnúchán Rós na Gaillimhe 2018 agus is féidir chuir isteach ar an comórtas ar líne freisin ag www.roseoftralee.ie/apply

Ná bíodh faitíos oraibh bhur aghaidheanna a thaispeánt i Tí O’Connells oíche amárach – beidh píosa craic ann murach faic eile.

Galway to receive new 1000-pupil secondary school

Galway is to receive a new secondary school as part of a national programme of new schools for the years 2019 – 2022, according to Galway West TD Sean Kyne.

It will be located either in the City or Oranmore area and will have the capacity to accommodate up to 1,000 pupils.

The Fine Gael TD said that the inclusion of a new second-level school for Galway, along with 42 new schools nationally, shows Minister for Education Richard Bruton’s determination to ensure that the country has the best education system in Europe.

It is projected to open in 2019, and will help address the needs of the growing population of Galway city and county.

The decision to establish a new school in Galway is based on the Department of Education’s demographic analysis and will also, Minister Bruton has confirmed, ‘be responsive to patronage demand’.

Minister Bruton also confirmed that a new online Patronage Process system is being developed which will make it easier for parents to have their say on the management model of new schools.

Sean Kyne TD said: “The Patronage Process for the new school in Galway will begin this year and while I do not wish to pre-empt such a process it would make sense to have a new school in Galway managed by a patron not already in Galway.

“An obvious example is the Educate Together model which does not yet have a second-level school in Galway. A new school under that patron would serve the hundreds of pupils attending the Educate Together primary schools in Galway.”

NUI Galway’s inaugural Employability Award Ceremony was held today where 56 students were presented with their Award Certificate by President of the University Professor Ciarán Ó hÓgartaigh.

The Employability Award is a recognition of learning and skills developed through work experience and extra-curricular activities.

Each event and workshop is carefully selected and co-ordinated to provide students with the opportunity to enhance their skills and employability.

Josephine Walsh, Head of the Career Development Centre at NUI Galway, said: “The award programme was designed by the Career Development Centre to increase students’ employability skills, empower them to make successful transitions towards fulfilling careers and equip them with a framework for lifelong career management.”

Employer partners have indicated that students’ confidence and their ability to articulate skills developed through the award will make recruitment of NUI Galway graduates more attractive.

Students from across all disciplines participated in the Award programme and have reported excellent outcomes.

Vincent McBrien, a second year Drama, Theatre & Performance student who completed the award said: “I have gained many personal benefits that will help me in my career journey. As a result of completing the award I am more confident in myself and my work and have a new found motivation which will allow me to step up to every new opportunity that comes my way.”

Siobhan Cullen, a third year Earth and Ocean student, said: “I believe that I have gained a more competent approach to choosing and securing a career through participating in the Employability Award Programme. Through an elevated sense of self-awareness, I can move forward and plan for the future with confidence.”

The NUI Galway Employability Award contributes to a number of other student awards, including the internationally recognised ALIVE award for Volunteering, and will be available for all students to participate in from September 2019.
