University of Galway students line-out for Rugby World Cup

0

University of Galway has capitalised on the Rugby World Cup to further cement its ENLIGHT partnership with University of Bordeaux.

The University rugby team lined out as part of the exchange, including playing a challenge match with Rugby Club of Gradignan and training at their home ground, Ornon Stadium as well as a conference-discussion on inter-culturalism in sports with the two clubs and the Olympic Sports Committee.

Professor Becky Whay, Vice President International at University of Galway said, “We are extremely proud of our place in the ENLIGHT partnership – even moreso, we are delighted to see such a relationship with Bordeaux develop in such an organic way, with students and players engaging with one another.”

“We hope it is a symbol of the much broader partnerships which can develop between the two cities and universities, as well as at a more local level with Galway and Gradignan.”

The University of Galway trip was facilitated through a collaboration between Renaud Delbru, a graduate and former staff member of the University, and co-founder of University of Galway spin-out Siren, and the Gradignan town hall, particularly Councilwoman Claire Rivenc of IUT Bordeaux, University of Bordeaux.

Mike O’Mahony, University of Galway Rugby Club, said: “The exchange was an excellent example of seizing an opportunity to build relations and partnerships, thanks both to the Rugby World Cup and also University of Galway’s involvement in ENLIGHT.”

“We have something to build on and we hope we can use these links to learn from our French partners as well, on and off the field.”

The University of Galway players spent four days in Gradignan and also met the local mayor and joined the local rugby school at the Rugby Club of Gradignan, where they met the youngest players involved in the sport.

Baboró Arts Festival: Special accessibility show for children with extra needs

0

Baboró International Arts Festival for Children kicks off on Friday with an incredible range of events, and special consideration for children with additional needs.

A bespoke audio description and touch tour of Jessica Wilson’s exhibition I See You Like This led by facilitator Mo Harte will take place at Galway Arts Centre on Saturday 21 October, 10am – 11am.

With our ever-growing appetite to document our lives through photos and selfies, children are often the reluctant subjects of adults’ cameras – asked to smile, look natural and come in closer.

In I See You Like This, Australian artist Jessica Wilson, flips the camera around giving the children control while their significant adults become their subjects.

Facilitated by Jessica in a private session the week before the festival begins, children will design and direct a creative photoshoot of their significant adult, captured by photographer Julia Dunin. The resulting portraits will create the exhibition.

An Audio Description is a live verbal commentary describing the visual elements in the photographic portraits in I See You Like This.

The audio description will be delivered during an in person private tour before the exhibition is open to the public.

The tour will also have a tactile exploration of the props used to make these unique photographic portraits created by Galway children.

This tour can be very beneficial to children who are blind, visually impaired, on the autistic spectrum, non-verbal or have additional needs.

How to Build a Thriving E-Commerce Business in 2023?

E-Commerce Enterprise in 2023: Where to Start?

It’s 2023, and this new age presents exciting prospects for businesses of all kinds and types with firm foundations in the digital space. The vast potential for online profit-making ventures is all thanks to the rapid advancement of technology and evolving consumer market behavior. Moreover, with increased competition, many businesses seek more opportunities on the Internet.

Excellent examples of e-commerce ventures driven by these factors include iGaming platforms like Live Casino, online shopping sites such as Amazon, and even streaming services like Netflix. Additionally, we shouldn’t forget that the social media platforms we all relish today are part of the vast e-commerce industry we are talking about.

While it seems like an easy concept to execute in theory, you must make well-calculated moves and implement them effectively to achieve the desired results business-wise. Read our extensive guide to understand the puzzle pieces you must arrange on the board to build a thriving enterprise in 2023.

Think About Your Starting Idea Extensively

Honing your business idea should be the ideal starting point for anyone looking to throw their hat in the ring of electronic commerce. Your foundational idea should be rooted in something that fascinates you, one that you likely have some expertise in, and it should have a demand in the marketplace.

With a defined focal point, all your energies will then be rightly directed toward curating a high-quality product. As you iron out the details, ensure that you have something that makes your idea stand out from all similar e-commerce brands that may have more on their plate. Some vital pointers that could help you carve out a good niche for yourself may include:

  • One-on-one conversations with people in the same space for your product or service;
  • The prospective competition you may face after the launch;
  • Mapping out your profitability predictions;
  • Making a point of understanding your target audience and your needs;
  • Caring out exhaustive market research around your idea and other similar concepts.

Get the Ball Rolling

After you are satisfied with your idea’s potential for success, it’s time to set up all the structures to help your business take off. Start by finding the correct format that suits your idea. If you’re well acquainted with this subject, then go ahead and choose what will work best. If not, you are better off consulting someone with more experience on the subject, or an experienced attorney for that matter.

From there, come up with a suitable name for your business, and ensure that it complies with all the regulatory requirements related to naming. One way to guarantee that everything is by the book is to visit your nearest patent and trademark office or check the online resources of the said government department. Further, if your start-up needs a license, you should also get that sorted, as you can’t operate outside the boundaries of the laws. Also, having a dedicated bank account for your business is wiser to prepare you for the future payments you will be receiving.

Source Your E-Commerce Products

As an electronic commerce business, you want to source the best products to satisfy your customer base. But at the same time, don’t forget to consider affordability on your end so that besides meeting your customers’ needs, you can still break even and be profitable. This vital step will involve looking for dependable manufacturers, wholesalers, and distributors in your chosen niche. Use websites like Thomasnet, Alibaba, and many more to help you find potential suppliers.

You’ll also want to consider whether you will keep your goods in stock to be sold later after receiving customer orders or go the drop shipping way. Some business owners prefer the latter method, as goods are only procured from the supplier after customers place an order. Here, it’s up to you to gauge what works best for you and your business and, at the end of the day, what will serve your customers’ interests best.

Facilitate Seamless Payment Processes

Your electronic commerce start-up should also feature a swift payment process with no delays. A lengthy checkout process may lead to cart abandonment, which will end up detrimental to your sales numbers. Therefore, you must enlist multiple payment options like debit/credit cards, mobile money payments, e-wallets, and any others that may suit your clientele base.

Meanwhile, as you work on facilitating speedy payment verification processes, it is also prudent to ascertain the security of financial transactions conducted via your platform. You don’t want to be in a position where the financial security of your site is compromised, do you?

You Are All Set!

Building an effective, well-oiled electronic commerce business requires tons of strategic planning and proper implementation. Enlist the points above to build a solid foundation but don’t stop there. There are so many more ideas and principles that go towards building a successful e-commerce platform, especially since the sector keeps evolving. A data-driven and consultative approach will undoubtedly serve you well in the long run.

There will also be a ‘Superhero Movie Night’ with Barry Fitzgerald who returns to the Festival to give a talk on the science of superhero powers, followed by a screening of the new Marvel movie ‘The Marvels’.

Further building on the theme, Atlantic Technological University will be holding two events in Galway that will delve into different aspects of what it means to be human.

The events will focus on the impact of nutrition and biomechanics on human performance and another event will investigate human personality traits and how we can use them, especially in areas such as career development.

Superhuman, developed by CÚRAM, is an exciting exhibit at the Galway City Museum. Full of hands-on fun and interactive elements, it invites the public to explore the creativity and innovation of MedTech research, seeking to find solutions for human illnesses.

The exhibit is open from Tuesday to Saturday and there will be a special workshop for schools, will be led by CÚRAM’s education team. The workshop will explore creative solutions to help people overcome the difficulties of living with an illness.

Galway Christmas Market returning for extended run this year

0
Galway Daily news Galway Christmas Market returns

The annual Galway City Christmas Market will return next month, bringing fun, food, and craft goods to the city centre for two months.

The city council has confirmed that Eyre Square North will be closed to traffic from November 5 until January 9 in order to facilitate the Christmas Market.

There were almost half a million visitors to the Christmas Market last year, and with the 2023 Market extended for an even longer period, we can expect to see that number topped this year.

Last year there were more than 50 wooden cabins serving bratwurst, pretzels, crêpes and waffles spread across the Square.

Visitors also got to enjoy a view of Galway from atop the Ferris Wheel, create fun for the family on the Carousel, and enjoy some craic with friends in the Beer Tent.

County Galway’s Best Sweet Spots for Food Tourists

0
Díolacháin Cácaí - Galway Daily

If you’re something of a food tourist, you’ll find many opportunities to try traditional Irish dishes like boxty or soda bread. When it comes to dessert arrangements, Irish confectioners often source local milk and salt to create their sweet treats. Below you’ll find three of County Galway’s best sweet spots, where food tourists can satisfy their sweet tooth.

Candyland

Located in the heart of Galway itself, Candyland is a one-stop variety shop that sells many different kinds of sweets. Not only does their selection change with the seasons, but they also stock groceries and treats from America, Australia and New Zealand. Naturally, old and retro Irish sweets are included in their collection.

Candyland is one of those shops that tries to gather new and unfamiliar treats from abroad. No matter the continent, we have a worldwide fascination with sweets due to their agreeable taste and even how they look. In Ireland and beyond, sweets are used to market things that you can’t eat, simply because they’re colourful and eye-catching. This can be even seen in iGaming websites, where users can play Sugar Rush at Paddy Power Bingo, but that isn’t the only slot game out there that uses sweets as a theme. Even some of the earliest slot machines, and many today, use fruit symbols that are brightly coloured and stoke our appetite even if there’s no lemon or cherry to eat.

If you’re a local citizen or a food tourist and you want to experience American sweets, Candyland should have you covered. It’s also great for those who don’t know what they want since they have a wide selection, so something will appeal to fussier eaters.

Gourmet Tart Company

If you prefer baked goods to hard candy, places like the Gourmet Tart Company can also be found dotted around Galway City, including by its coastline at Salthill. Specialising in Irish and European recipes, the company makes a variety of handmade treats from éclairs to croissants and macarons.

The name is slightly misleading since they also make savoury snacks and takeaway meals like boeuf bourguignon or sweet potato and spinach curry. They also operate cafés on their premises, serving coffee and other hot drinks that can be as sweet as you like. Many of their snacks come in small plastic pots, with fruit salad pots being available for those who prefer a naturally sweet pick-me-up. You could use WebMD’s diet guidance to identify the sweetest. Since they have several locations near Galway, visitors near the county’s city can stop here between their travels.

They also create hampers that can be delivered across the island or collected in-store. This means visitors can book and collect a more substantial treat en route to their hotel. Their delivery services also mean that visitors to other parts of Ireland, from Donegal to Cork, can get in on the action.

Abbeyglen Castle Hotel

In the furthest western fringes of County Galway is the Abbeyglen Castle Hotel, a Clifden resort that offers an all-in-one luxury experience. That includes luxury suites and helpings from the castle restaurant and its gourmet food. Being so close to the coast, fresh seafood is their specialty. Salty seafood is anything but sweet, however, but that’s where dessert comes in.

Dessert is presented as a self-service buffet where many different kinds of cake are available – cheesecakes, brownies, crumbles, profiteroles and more. Overall, Abbeyglen is best for tourists who are looking to get out to Ireland’s rural areas, to see its old castles and fractured coastline, but also find a cake buffet waiting for them there.

DPD converts entire delivery fleet in Galway City to electric vehicles

Parcel delivery company DPD has converted their entire fleet in Galway City to electric vehicles.

All diesel vans have been removed from DPD Ireland’s routes within Galway city, and parcel
deliveries will now be made by electric vehicles.

The Galway City depot has a fleet of 18 electric vehicles, delivering 650,000 parcels each year, and with this latest move to electric vehicles the company expects to offset 180 tonnes of CO2 emissions.

Matty & Jennifer Heneghan, owners of DPD’s Galway City depot said, ““We are delighted to be serving the city of Galway with electric vehicles, and proud that our Galway network has become 100% fully electric.”

“The staff are honoured to be ambassadors on our journey to be Ireland’s most
sustainable parcel delivery company.”

Last year, DPD Ireland deployed Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) as a replacement fuel for diesel in its heavy goods vehicles (linehaul).

The line-haul routes carry parcels between DPD Ireland’s central sorting hub in Athlone and its 35 depots on the island of Ireland.

Powering all domestic linehaul routes with this sustainable biofuel, DPD expects to reduce its emissions by over 4,350 tons CO2e per year versus a conventional diesel operation.

Stephen Tummon, Sustainability Programme Manager at DPD Ireland, said: “I’d like to thank Matty, Jennifer and the team for their commitment and foresight in leading the way with our continued rollout of EVs.”

“The reduction in emissions for Galway supports our commitment to achieve net-zero emissions by 2040,” he added.

Grenada Passport for South Africans: E-2 American Business Visa and More

Galway Daily news flight cancellation cancelled Government backs credit note refund for Irish travel agent and tour operator holidays

No language tests, minimal requirements for foreigners and affordable cost are the characteristics of the offer for wealthy investors. The program of obtaining a passport consists of several stages, and the path to naturalization is helped by the advice of experts of the Immigrant Invest Vladlena Baranova agency.

It is worth paying attention to the offer of Grenada for several reasons:

  1. The Caribbean  island citizens enjoy excellent views and a safe atmosphere.
  2. Getting Grenada citizenship means using a favorable taxation system.
  3. The country offers new opportunities for business development.

Therefore, obtaining a Grenada passport opens up good prospects for investors.

Overview of Grenada Citizenship by Investment Program

The desire to attract foreign investors led to the creation of a special program. The immigrant contributes funds to the development of the country, and the government issues a passport. This is how most programs work, but the uniqueness of Grenada makes it worth mentioning:

  1. Soft requirements. The applicant does not need to reside on the territory of the island to obtain a residence permit and passport. The application can be done remotely with the support of accredited agents.
  2. The size of the investment. The size of the contribution depends on the chosen method. Wealthy entrepreneurs buy real estate or contribute funds to organizations approved by the government.
  3. Application processing. The decision and issuance of a passport takes no more than six months. This is the time the applicant spends on paperwork, searching for real estate and receiving an official decision.

Adding dependents to the application for second citizenship in Grenada is allowed. The cost increases, but this is a common consequence.

Advantages of the Grenadian Passport for South Africans

Moving to one of the islands will be a great option to develop your own business. Passport holders become eligible for visa-free travel. This means that you do not need to obtain a visa to travel. You can formalize documents for a stay in one of 146 countries upon arrival.

Other aspects of Grenada citizenship by investment are also affected. A foreigner who has successfully completed the path of naturalization receives:

  • the possibility of medical care by qualified doctors;
  • the opportunity to receive education in the best universities in the country or abroad;
  • an opportunity to avoid double taxation;
  • the opportunity not to pay taxes on capital gains, dividends or royalties;
  • the ability to obtain a visa to work and live in the States.

The low cost of entry should also not be overlooked. Investors pay from $150,000 to $150,000 for paperwork. Soft requirements set the program apart from other options, so immigrants continue to enjoy favorable conditions and advantages.

Process of Obtaining Grenadian Citizenship for South Africans

It is possible to make an application at the consulate remotely, but it is necessary to have an assistant. An accredited agent has the right to submit applications for clients without their presence. Cooperation involves assistance in preparing the paperwork and assembling the required package.

There are two investment options available to applicants – making a non-refundable contribution or purchasing investment real estate in Grenada in one of the regions of the island. Regardless of the choice, the application process consists of:

  1. Pre-screening. The applicant is vetted by lawyers. The check includes clarifying information about the applicant, such as the accuracy of the data provided. They also check the way in which the capital is obtained.
  2. Paperwork preparation. After completing the check, the applicant receives a list of mandatory documents. Often the package includes a bank statement, medical reports and other personal papers.
  3. Legal examination. The verification is conducted for 3 to 6 months. The department checks the prepared documents. The investor does not need to be present in the country for this.
  4. Making the investment. Depending on the chosen method, the amount of the contribution is determined but registration fees and inspection services are paid.

The decision on the application is sent to the agent or in another way specified in the application. The immigrant can get a second passport (dual citizenship is allowed) at the consulate, at the home address or through a licensed agent. The procedure takes no more than one month.

Conclusion

The purchase of real estate in Grenada will allow you to apply for official status. The value of the property is determined taking into account the number of applicants. The premises can only be used for residential purposes and the minimum tenure is 5 years.

Non-refundable contributions to projects that are approved by the government are less favorable. This is due to the fact that repayment is possible with additional investment. If we compare this option with the purchase of real estate, the second one is more profitable for the investor.

Galway Daily news Kinvara Boil Water Notice

A Boil Water Notice has been issued for homes and businesses on the Kinvara Public Water Supply due to issues at the treatment plant.

Uisce Eireann has said that mechanical issue at the water treatment plant has compromised the disinfection of the water supply.

The Boil Water Notice affects approximately 2,162 people in the Kinvara area.

The areas affected include customers in Kinvara and surrounding areas. The Corranroo Group Water Scheme is also impacted.

Tony Kelly, Uisce Éireann, has acknowledged the impact this notice will have on the community and apologised for the inconvenience to customers.

“We are working to restore drinking water quality for all impacted customers. We will monitor the supply over the coming days and will seek to lift the notice in consultation with the HSE as quickly as it is safe to do so.”

Experts from Uisce Éireann are assessing the situation with a view to having the notice lifted as quickly and safely as possible.

In the meantime, all customers of this supply are advised to boil water before use until further notice.

Water must be boiled for drinking, drinks made with water, preparation of food not cooked prior to eating, infant formula, brushing teeth, or making ice.

However, the water supply is still suitable for hygiene purposes, such as showering and hand-washing.

Extreme pressure on UHG this evening with long ED wait times

Galway Daily news

The Emergency Department at University Hospital Galway is extremely busy this evening with patients attending the ED for routine and non-urgent treatment experiencing very long waiting times.

As always, people who require emergency care are encouraged to attend EDs where they will be prioritised.

The high number of people attending who need to be admitted for ongoing treatment means that there is pressure on bed availability.

This is resulting in significant delays being experienced by patients in the Emergency Department who are waiting for a bed to become available on a ward.

There are currently 28 patients on trolleys in ED awaiting admission to in-patient beds and over 100 patients within the department.

All available beds are in use. Every effort is being made to discharge patients who are ready to go home so that beds will become available for patients who need to be admitted, at the earliest opportunity.

The hospital acknowledges that these delays are very difficult for patients and their families and apologises for the inconvenience and distress these delays cause.

UHG continues to request that people only attend the Emergency Department at the hospital if it is an emergency situation.

They are asking that people attend their GP or out of hours service in the first instance if at all possible. The Roscommon Injury Unit is also open from 8am to 8pm to treat a range of injuries in both adults and children over five years of age.

galway daily news production equipment europe plans for athenry hq

Galway County Council’s decision to grant planning permission to Production Equipment UC for a new global headquarters in Athenry has been welcomed by Galway East TD Seán Canney.

Production Equipment Europe is a locally owned business that has developed into one of Europe’s leading industrial distribution companies, supplying over 100,000 products to customers across the globe.

The company has facilities in seven countries, employing 400 people, and it has chosen to develop its new strategic HQ in Athenry.

The 100,000 ft2 facility will contain highly automated and efficient operations with a focus on green technologies. The project represents a €25 million investment and will provide for 121 highly skilled jobs in Athenry once the facility is up and running.

“This is more positive news for Athenry and the region and follows on from the announcement by Dexcom to locate their Global Headquarters in Athenry creating 1,200 highly skilled jobs,” said Deputy Canney.

“It is very important that the Local Area Plan for Athenry now being developed considers the huge demand these developments will place on housing supply and the Local Area Plan needs to ensure the sufficient land is zoned for residential development and available over the next 5 years.

“The positive news regarding the All-Ireland Rail Review which supports the reopening of the Western Rail Corridor north from Athenry through Tuam and onto Claremorris is also very important influence on decisions being made by Global Companies on their location strategy.”
