Galway Daily weather Met Eireann issues fresh weather warning for Galway

A status yellow warning will come into effect this evening ahead as temperatures plummet well below freezing in many areas.

Met Éireann said that it will be very cold, with frost and ice developing, which will cause hazardous travelling conditions.

The warning begins at 6pm today, and will remain in place until midday on Friday.

A total of 23 counties in the State will be affected by the low temperature/ ice warning.

Nighttime temperature are expected to remain around freezing over the weekend, before slowly rising next week.

Three Connacht and Ireland rugby players have been honoured at a mayoral reception in City Hall this week.

Bundee Aki, Finlay Bealham and Mack Hansen were honoured by Galway City Council for their sporting achievements in this year’s Six Nations, at the Rugby World Cup, and as part of the Connacht Rugby squad.

Cllr Eddie Hoare, Mayor of the City of Galway, said: “Every try, every point, every ruck, every line out, every throw in – whether we were in Knocknacarra or Westside or Mervue or France – we were there with you at the Rugby World Cup…”

“All of us are here today to acknowledge you – your sporting prowess, your dedication, your sportsmanship – that is an example to any young player in any sport.

“There’s no doubt you have inspired a new generation of rugby players in Galway and in Ireland. We have a number of clubs in the city with boys and girls taking to the pitch every day of the week, inspired by what you did at the World Cup, the Six Nations, and in Connacht Rugby.

“Your energy, your physicality, your prowess – the preparation you put in – are an example to them…We share our gratitude and thanks to your families, friends and teams at home, who set you on the course to be here with us today in Ireland.”

The Mayor recognised the essential work of Connacht Rugby in bringing world-class players to the province. Mayor Hoare closed the event by wishing all in Connacht Rugby the best for the remainder of their 2023 Fixtures, and in 2024.

Planning refused again for Galway City mobile tower

Plans for a new mobile and broadband telecoms tower on the west side of Galway City have been shot down again by An Bord Pleanála.

The application by Vantage Towers Ltd was for a 24m high lattice tower which would carry 6 antennae and 5 dishes for Vodafone, and another 2 antennae and a single dish for Eir and Three’s use.

The proposed tower was to be built on a site just off the Cappagh Road, north of the junction with the Western Distributor Road.

Other work involved in the project would involve the creation of a 90m access track to the site of the tower.

Galway City Council rejected the planning application back in 2022 due to the access road and the site’s proximity to the proposed N6 Galway City Ring Road route.

“If permitted, the proximity of the proposed development will prejudice the plans for the delivery of this scheme and materially contravene the policy of the Galway City Development Plan 2017 – 2023,” the council’s decision said.

In appealing that decision to An Bord Pleanála, Vantage Towers said that there is a need for this mast as another nearby tower is to be removed to make way for the Ring Road.

The appeal also stated that the access track which is cited as being in too close proximity to the Ring Road route would only be temporary, to be replaced with another access point from the north.

The developer stated that they have received the landowner’s consent to access the site from the North.

An Bord Pleanála’s inspector recommended that the development be approved subject to conditions, but the board ultimately overruled that recommendation to refuse permission.

The board’s decision stated that the alternative long-term access track comprised a material alteration to the original application and public notices.

“In deciding not to accept the Inspector’s recommendation to grant permission, the Board was not of the view that the entrance and access as originally submitted could be delivered as proposed and the alternative access and access route did not form part of the application notice.”

Galway University Hospitals are hosting an interfaith memorial service this week for all those who died last year.

The 14th annual Interfaith Memorial Service, organised by the hospitals’ End of Life Committee, will take place at 7pm on Thursday, November 30 in the Ardilaun Hotel.

Galway University Hospitals care for patients from a wide geographical area and the End of Life Committee wants to reach out and acknowledge the loss felt by all families and friends who have been bereaved.

The theme of the service is “Le Chéile, bringing us together to remember our patients alongside their families and loved ones. In this year’s service, those who died in 2022 will especially be remembered. We hope that those bereaved will take some solace in knowing that their loved one has not been forgotten.

“Those we love don’t go away they walk beside us every day, unseen, unheard but always near, still loved & dearly missed.”

Dangerous driving conditions as weather warning for Ice issued

Freezing temperatures are expected this week with Met Eireann issuing a weather warning for almost the entire country.

Extreme cold is forecast for Thursday evening and early Friday, with temperatures expected to drop as low as -3 degrees overnight in many areas.

Motorists are advised by Met Eireann to be careful, as frost and ice on the roads will create hazardous driving conditions.

The status Yellow Low Temperature / Ice Warning will be in effect from 6pm on Thursday evening until 12pm on Friday afternoon.

“Very cold with temperatures expected to fall below -3 degrees in many areas. Frost and ice developing will cause hazardous travelling conditions.”

The warning has been issued for all of Connacht, along with counties Carlow, Kildare, Kilkenny, Laois, Longford, Louth, Meath, Offaly, Westmeath, Wicklow, Cavan, Donegal, Monaghan, Clare, Cork, Kerry, Limerick, and Tipperary.

University of Galway based Construct Innovate awarded €2 million funding

Construct Innovate research centre based at the University of Galway has been awarded €2 million in funding for specialised equipment at testing facilities.

Construct Innovate secured grants to fund three projects at the University of Galway and one project at UCD.

The 2023 Capital Equipment Fund will allow Construct Innovate to develop a building envelope testbed, expand and upgrade their structural testing facilities and enable the development of modern methods of construction (MMC) through automated and process technologies.

Construct Innovate directors, Prof Jamie Goggins and Dr Magdalena Hajdukiewicz, welcomed the announcement of the Capital Equipment Fund results.

Dr Hajdukiewicz said, “Construct Innovate facilitates industry-led, independent and evidence-based research supporting innovation and sustainability in the construction sector.”

“This recent funding will provide our partner institutions with state-of-the-art equipment that supports the development and testing of new materials and systems, including modern methods of construction and utilisation of digital technologies.”

The funding supports the development of a Building Envelope Testbed at the University of Galway. The 3-cell facility will have the capacity to conduct various types of tests measuring the performance of building envelope assemblies.

The will include thermal characteristics, moisture transfer, solar and luminous characteristics of glazing, air permeability, water tightness, acoustic performance, energy performance (including renewable energy systems), and indoor environmental quality incl. thermal comfort.

The testbed’s design and specifications have been created with the specific needs of Ireland’s construction industry in mind.

Secondly, a suite of equipment is being funded to extend the capabilities within the Large Structures Testing Laboratory at the University of Galway to be suitable for testing construction elements at or near full-scale.

The money will also be used for an autonomous mobile robot which will advance the next-generation of automation in construction.

This will also be deployed for off-site construction and assembly process development, specifically focusing on production scale-up capability.

County Galway adopts first ever Tourism Strategy

County Galway adopts first ever Tourism Strategy — Derryclare Lough, Connemara, County Galway.

Galway County Council has adopted the first-ever tourism strategy for County Galway, Ireland’s leading cultural and natural heritage tourism destination.

The County Galway Tourism Strategy 2023-2031 sets out to spread the benefits of Galway’s growing tourism economy across the wider county, promote sustainable tourism development, support existing jobs and create new ones across the sector.

The tourism plan also is targeting a 10% increase in overall visitor spend by 2030 with a particular focus on attracting visitors who stay longer and spend more in Galway’s towns and villages.

“The adoption of this strategy means that, for the first time, there is a collaborative framework in place for the development of tourism over the next eight years across the County,” commented Liam Conneally, Chief Executive of Galway County Council.

The Tourism Strategy targets four strategic areas, which each come with key actions and recommendations for growth and specific targeted interventions to address local opportunities.

Mr. Conneally continued, “This tourism strategy represents an opportunity to support existing and create new employment, establish sustainability as a foundation for the future, and will extend the benefits of tourism to less-visited areas.”

The Strategy was formally adopted by the elected members of Galway County Council at their monthly meeting this week.

As the most visited destination outside of Dublin, Galway benefits considerably from tourism – with 984,000 domestic trips and 1.7 million overseas visitors contributing €754 million in tourism expenditure.

Cllr Liam Carroll, Cathaoirleach of Galway County Council said, “The level of engagement by public bodies, private enterprises, communities and individuals in the development of this strategy underlines the far-reaching significance and benefits of tourism.”

“This partnership approach provides a solid and positive basis for the further development of tourism across our unique county, and I have no doubt that this strategy will serve visitors and communities across the county well in the coming years.”

“One of the challenges of this strategy, therefore, is to seek to manage well-developed tourism areas within the County with the further growth of less-established areas.”

The County Galway Tourism Strategy 2023-2031 will be formally launched in early 2024, along with an Implementation Plan in the same year.

In a promising bit of news for pet owners, planning permission is being sought for a new Dog Park near Oranmore.

The application is for a dog park which will be on a 1.1Ha site located off the Reville Village Road south of Oranmore.

A cover letter for the planning application states that it will provide a safe and secure place for the exercise, socialisation, and training of dogs.

“Given the current bylaws dogs need to be leashed in public parks. However, there is also a need for dogs to be able to run free to burn off energy and get adequate exercise. This is where the dog park comes into play.

“By providing a secure area for dogs to be off-leash, they will be safe and pose no nuisance to the general public. This facility is needed given the current complaints about off-leash dogs in parks.”

“It would also allow the more infirm dog owners to adequately exercise their dogs off-leash safely while they can sit down.”

The plans state that dog owners, walkers, or training groups will be able to reserve a time slot at the park, which will have a chain link fence and key code access.

A decision on this planning application is due from Galway County Council by January 12 of 2024.

Gardaí investigating arson attack on Galway City home

Gardaí are investigating an arson attack at a house in Galway City which took place last week.

On Tuesday, November 21 the attack occurred at a house in Ballinfoyle Park on the Headford Road.

The incident took place at approximately 6:30am that Tuesday morning.

An Garda Síochána have confirmed that no injuries were reported as a result of the arson.

No arrests have yet been made, and investigations are ongoing.

Anyone who may have information or who witnessed any suspicious activity in the area is asked to contact Galway Garda Station on 091 53-8000.

Minister Rabbitte welcomes new Local Link service in Co. Galway

Minister for Disability Anne Rabbitte TD has welcomed a new TFI Local Link service launched this week from Portumna to Nenagh in Co. Tipperary.

Route 322 will operate four daily return trips Monday to Saturday, with an additional return service between Puckaun and Nenagh, as well as three daily return services on Sunday.

The route will connect towns and villages such as Portumna, Lorrha, Carrigahorig, Terryglass, Ballinderry, Coolbawn, Puckaun, Dromineer, Ballycommon and Nenagh.

Speaking about the new route, Minister Rabbitte said the launch of Route 322 is very welcome news for Portumna and surrounding areas.

The Galway East TD said that it creates great connectivity with neighbouring towns and villages across the Shannon in Tipperary allowing people to access the great amenities both towns have to offer.

“This is something I was keen to see come on stream so it’s great to finally come to fruition,” she said.

“The opening up of this route also enhances and simplifies onward travel for students, in particular. Limerick is a prime location for students in East Galway to live and study. This new route will be beneficial for students studying in Limerick, allowing them to link to buses that travel further to the Universities.

“Local Link is such an important service and provides people with choices when choosing to travel by bus and there is no doubt that this will be a popular route between Portumna and Galway.”

Minister Rabbitte said that this demonstrates that the government is paying attention to public opinion and allocating funds for the infrastructure required for individuals to lives and experience the sense of independence and connectedness that this service provides.

“This is part of the Government’s Connecting Ireland Rural Mobility Plan for 2023, which is one of the most ambitious plans yet for rural transport.

“It will see 67 new or enhanced Connecting Ireland bus services come on stream, we are already seeing the benefit of the new Tuam to Galway route launched earlier this year, which has been extremely busy.”

The Station House Theatre in Clifden was packed out on Saturday as the local community paid tribute to Dr Brendan Flynn, who has led the Clifden Arts Festival into its 47th year.

The two-hour event, organised and hosted by Connemara Chamber of Commerce, included local music, dance and a series of speakers from different aspects of Connemara life, from education, business, religious, arts and music.

Dr Flynn received several presentations during the event which includes a framed letter from President Michael D. Higgins, a specially commissioned sculpture, and a framed photo of the overwhelming words of thanks from the community.

The main presentation was a piece of sculpture specially commissioned by Connemara Chamber of Commerce for Dr Flynn. The bronze piece was created renowned sculpture John Behan.

A letter was read out from President Higgins praising Dr Flynn’s “exemplary contributions to the educational, cultural, and economic vitality of Connemara”.

After a standing ovation from all in attendance, refreshments were enjoyed afterwards in the Clifden Station House Hotel.

Galway Roscommon Education Training Board (GRETB) has been recognised for best practice in teaching skills and confidence building in the annual ‘Learners’ Voices Across Ireland’ report.

The report was recently launched at the AONTAS Adult Education Summit at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin.

GRETB learners reported that tutors helped to build their confidence and sense of capability, and that the learning environment was one of mutual respect and knowledge-building.

Tutors were recognised for the time and one-on-one supports provided to learners depending on the support required.

One learner said that it is ‘such a relaxed way’ of learning.

“We all contribute to the class, but ultimately, our tutor prompts us to contribute to the lessons in ways that we probably wouldn’t even have thought that we could. It’s brilliant and makes us feel like we’re capable and confident,” they said.

Further Education and Training (FET) learners from Galway and across Ireland participated in focus groups and surveys to inform the research, which highlights overwhelmingly positive experiences of FET.

However, the report also reveals regional disparities in learning experiences due to inequalities in public transport, facilities, and inclusion and mental health supports.

CEO of AONTASDearbháil Lawless said: “There are two principal narratives emerging from this year’s ‘Learners’ Voices Across Ireland’ report – that education has a hugely transformative impact on learners’ lives, particularly those returning to education later in life – and that issues around local infrastructure and facilities are creating inequalities and barriers for learners across the country to access, or take full advantage of, those transformative experiences.”

Galway County Council has given the green light for a housing development of 30 houses, apartments and duplex units in Clifden.

Roonith Properties has been given planning permission to build a new housing estate on the northwest end of Clifden on the N59.

The mix of housing will comprise 8 one-bed units, 3 two-bed units, 5 three-bed houses; and 14 two-bed duplex units.

The site will be served by 47 car parking spaces, 36 bicycle parking spaces, and pedestrian connectivity to the existing footpath network.

The developer intends to provide three duplex units to the County Council for affordable or social housing in order to fulfil their Part V planning requirements.

Planning permission for the residential development was granted by Galway County Council with 43 conditions attached.

The council stipulated that a further Road Safety Audit of the plans must be carried out before the development commences, and all recommendations from it implemented, along with a third audit after construction is completed.

All of the homes must also be fitted with electric vehicle charging points, and are restricted to individual buyers in the first sale.

An Garda Síochána are advising the public to be alert for scams claiming that people are able to get discounted electricity.

Scam texts have been doing the rounds claiming that people are eligible for electricity discounts under the ‘Energy support scheme’.

These fraudulent texts, claiming to be from the government, then attempt to get people to click on a link meant to appear as though it is sending you to a government webpage.

An Garda Síochána North Western Region issued a statement saying, “The Government have confirmed that there is no such scheme offered and warned the public not to click on any links or enter any personal details.”

Crime Prevention Officers advise people not to give out any personal details to someone who texts or calls you.

If the person claiming to be from a trusted institution seems genuine, then you should call them back on a number you know to be genuine.

“Scams are usually out of the blue, often have a sense of urgency and are looking for personal information”.

Information scammers will be looking for can include any of the following: Name, Address, DOB, Mothers Maiden Name, Model of first car, Pets name, where born etc.

Official opening of new Spiddal Wastewater Treatment Plant

The official opening of the new €4 million Spiddal Wastewater Treatment Plant took place last week to mark the end of dumping raw sewage into Galway Bay.

Uisce Éireann was joined by local representatives who saw first-hand the state-of-the-art treatment being provided for wastewater in the village.

The €4 million project consists of the wastewater treatment plant itself, along with a new underground pump station and pipes to direct sewage to it. An existing outfall pipe was reused for the discharge of now-compliant wastewater.

Cathaoirleach of Galway County Council Cllr Liam Carroll spoke of his pride at seeing the plant up and running.

He commended the team at Uisce Éireann and Galway County Council who worked together as they navigated the project.

“This is a vital piece of infrastructure for the locality and all those involved in getting us here today deserve our gratitude,” Cllr Carroll said.

“The value of a reliable wastewater service, in a manner that protects the natural environment, cannot be overemphasised. This plant is essential to the economic and social development of this area.”

Plans for the new wastewater treatment plant in Spiddal were approved by An Bord Pleanála in 2019. The new plant will be able to cater for a population of up to 1,000 people, allowing for growth in the area.

The site is on land operated by Údarás na Gaeltachta to the northeast of Scoil Éinne, and adjacent to Spiddal Craft Village and Cuan Studio.

The project was advanced to end the discharge of 600 wheelie bins worth of untreated sewage into Galway Bay each day.

Uisce Éireann’s Paul Fallon paid tribute to the team who brought the significant project to life, saying, “It’s fitting that we are seeing out the end of the year with a celebration here in Spiddal.”

“Eliminating the discharge of raw sewage into Galway Bay has always been a priority for Uisce Éireann and we are proud to be ending this practice, safeguarding the local environment and enhancing tourism opportunities for this beautiful part of the country.”

“We say a big thank you to the local community including Udarás na Gaeltachta, Spiddal Craft and Design Studios, Danu Media, Stiuideo Cuan Teo as well as Scoil Einne for their ongoing support and patience throughout the delivery of this vital project.”
