The Six Most Photogenic Locations in Scotland That Every Serious Photographer Must Visit

0

Ireland is a top destination, and many tourists are attracted by its natural beauty and castles, but Scotland is also now on the map for every photographer who is serious about their craft. The country is home to some of the world’s most diverse and dramatic landscapes, and the fact that so many scenes from blockbuster movies have been filmed here is a testament to this. Skyfall, Highlander, Braveheart, and Prometheus are just a few examples of films that have taken advantage of Scotland’s spectacular scenery.

The Isle of Skye

For photographers, this is one of the very best locations in Scotland, and if you’ve only got time to visit one location for shots, the Isle of Skye should be it. There’s a huge variety of different landscapes here, from Talisker Bay’s wild seascapes to the gorgeous rolling hills of Quiraing.

There are some renowned Scottish landmarks here that are instantly recognizable, including the distinctive cliffs of the Old Man of Storr and the eerily isolated Neisy Lighthouse. The changeable weather and lighting conditions add to the photographic interest, making the Isle of Skye a favorite with photographers the world over.

Stac Pollaidh

If you’re a keen hiker as well as a photographer, then Stac Pollaidh should be on your must-visit list if you’re heading to Scotland. From the summit – weather dependent – you’ll be able to shoot panoramic, 360-degree views of the Highlands, which will be spread out before you like a vast, other-worldly carpet. Have a look at some stock photos to get more of an idea of this and the other locations on this list.

The stark beauty of this location makes it a dream for photographers – and as well as the landscape, you may be lucky enough to capture an image of a red deer or a red eagle while on your trek to the summit.

Glencoe

It’s no surprise that Glencoe is one of the most famous spots for photography in the Scottish Highlands. Landscape photographers love the easy access to locations, including the Three Sisters and Etive Mor waterfall.

Given how popular this location is, you may wish to visit in fall or winter when the area is much quieter, and you can capture some stunning shots of the gorgeous autumnal colors or snowy landscapes. Look out, too, for the iconic white stone cottages nestled into the slopes, which stand out dramatically against the brooding mountains in the latter months of the year.

Trossachs National Park

Located within Stirlingshire, Trossachs National Park is perfect for photographers looking for beautiful lochs to capture on film – there are plenty to be found here. Loch Ard is particularly worth a visit: the eastern side offers opportunities to get mirror-like reflections, while the odd boathouse and jetty add some additional visual interest.

If you’d like to make the most of misty morning conditions, then head to Loch Rusky, which is a twenty-minute drive east of Loch Ard – it holds onto the mist longer than most of the other lochs, giving you more chance to capture this spectacular landscape effect.

The Kelpies

These distinctive steel sculptures stand around thirty meters high and have been designed to resemble the giant horses of mythical Scottish water spirits. They look spectacular whether photographed from afar or close up – for the latter, it’s wise to choose an extreme wide-angled lens for the best shots possible.

The blue hour is an ideal time to visit the Kelpies: they light up at night, thereby offering additional opportunities to create some breathtaking photographic art.

Smailholm Tower

Located around a fifteen-minute drive west of Kelso on the Scotland-England border, Smailholm Tower is the perfect location to capture some exquisitely moody landscape shots at any time of day. The forbidding tower dates back to the 1400s and was originally used to guard the border. It’s surrounded by foreboding crags, and there are several elevated grassy areas in the surroundings that offer great viewpoints from which to take shots.

Look out for soaring kestrels, ospreys, and golden or white-tailed eagles in the skies above to add even more atmosphere to your photos of Smailholm Tower.

Final Thoughts

Scotland is a photographer’s dream location. The vast range of landscapes, points of local interest, and variable weather conditions mean that a shoot is never the same twice, and there’s ample opportunity to capture an array of moods and effects. Further, the mainland is relatively small, meaning that traveling from north to south or west to east can be undertaken in a relatively short space of time. And with the nearly eight hundred islands to explore, Scotland really does offer everything a photographer could wish for.

University Hospital Galway is warning of long waiting times as the emergency department is under significant pressure today.

The ED at UHG has experienced high levels of attendances this week and there is significant pressure on bed availability.

There were 42 patients in the emergency department for whom no bed was available as of this morning, and another 12 without a bed in the wards.

In addition to these pressures, the hospital is treating 55 patients with respiratory illnesses including flu, COVID-19 and RSV, with two wards managing outbreaks of respiratory viruses.

Visiting is limited in wards affected by outbreaks and visitors to all other areas of the hospital should be mindful of public health advice.

Planning refused again for over 100 houses and apartments in Oranmore

0
Galway Daily news Planning refused for large Oranmore housing development

An Bord Pleanála has refused planning permission for a residential development of more than 100 houses and apartments in Oranmore.

Corestone 16 Ltd was refused planning permission in October 2022 for 101 houses and apartments on Coast Road, Oranmore, next to the train station.

The original application made to the county council was for 91 homes, but this was increased in revised plans submitted after the council asked the developer to consider a higher density.

The developer appealed that decision to An Bord Pleanála, which has upheld the council’s original decision.

In refusing planning permission on the appeal An Bord Pleanála said that the proposed development failed to adhere to the goals for the Garraun area outlined in the county development plan.

Specifically, the board said that the design lacked clarity on how it would connect with future community facilities and adjoining lands in a way which would accommodate compact growth.

The decision also said that the proposal had a “poor pedestrian environment” as well as “fragmented open spaces”, and also criticised the roads and parking layout.

The estate as proposed, “undermines the delivery of an integrated urban development which is required to ensure the delivery of compact growth.”

The appeal had stated that the estate would create a new greenway with pedestrian and cycling connections to the village and station.

It also argued that the current proposal was the first part of a larger masterplan for the area, adding “As part of the next phase, the central landscaped space will be expanded to create a new central park”.

Imported Used Cars saw 50,716 registrations in 2023, an increase of 9.09% on 2022 but a decrease of 55.48% on 2019.

Brian Cooke, SIMI Director General said that last year was one of progress for the Irish motor industry, in both new car registrations, and electric vehicle sales.

A total of 22,789 new electric cars were registered in 2023, an increase on the 15,678 registrations seen in 2022 (+45.4%) and 3,444 in 2019 (+561.7%).

“We do expect to see some growth in EV sales again in 2024, but key to this will be the ongoing Government support, both in terms of vehicle and taxation incentives and investment in a fit-for-purpose charging infrastructure.”

“The mix in the new car market however, from electric to hybrid to more traditional engine types, highlights the diverse nature of Irish motorists’ driving requirements,” he added.

“Reducing the age of the national fleet, as well as moving to zero emission vehicles, will be vital if we want to get close to Ireland’s climate goals.”

Petrol vehicles still hold the largest market share at 30% of the total, followed by Diesel (22.16%), Electric (18.70%), Hybrid (18.54%), and Plug-In Hybrid (8.28%).

Automatic transmissions now account for (64.54%) of market share, while manual transmissions have declined (35.35%).

The hatchback continues to remain Ireland’s top selling car body type of 2023. While grey retains the top selling colour title for the eight year running.

Help name the city’s newest Bridge!

The new pedestrian and cycling bridge across the Corrib is in need of a proper name, and the people of Galway City are being asked to have their say.

The Salmon Weir Pedestrian and Cycling Bridge could bear a name which commemorates an individual or event which is significant to Galway.

Towards that end, a public consultation process has begun and will run for the next month.

The policy and application forms are available online at https://www.galwaycity.ie/civic-naming.

The application process will remain open until 6pm on Sunday, February 11, 2024.

The €7 million bridge which spans approximately 80m across the Corrib was officially opened last May.

The pedestrian bridge features three spans, roughly 10m, 55m and 15m in length respectively, across three waterways.

The bridge crosses Persse’s Distillery River (formally called Mill Race), the Lower River Corrib and Friar’s River (formerly called Waterside canal).

The new bridge, the first to span the Corrib in over 30 years, serves as a focal point for locals and tourists to safely cross the river on foot or by bike.

Plans for the new bridge were in the works for years to ease pressure from the old Salmon Weir bridge, which is unsuited to pedestrians and cyclists due to its narrow paths.

Green light for Headford housing development

Galway Daily news Galway County Council has granted planning permission for a housing development in Headford

Galway County Council has granted planning permission for a housing development in Headford, while the developer is challenging the financial contribution required.

The council approved plans for eight houses on a greenfield site on the northern edge of Headford, along the R334.

The original plans were for 10 houses, but this was reduced at the request of the council for an increased provision of public open space.

Planning permission for the housing development was granted with a total of 27 conditions attached.

Condition No. 26 states that a “special contribution” of €50,000 must be paid to “facilitate installation of supplementary road measures at R334 gateway transitional zone”.

This would include “necessary road improvements” and reinstating line markings and footpaths which would be damaged during construction.

This has been appealed by the applicant, stating that they are not aware of any supplementary measures to be installed at this location, and that none are specified in the county development plan.

The appeal seeks clarity on how the figure of €50,000 was reached, clarity on the nature and timeframe of any works which are to be carried out, and confirmation that such a contribution would be ringfenced for this usage or refunded if not used.

The appeal also contends that the reinstatement of line markings and footpaths would be covered by their general development contribution.

Planning permission is being sought to add a new restaurant space to the historic Murphy’s Bar in Galway City Centre.

A planning application has been made by Tatuape Limited for the conversion of the first floor of the building above Murphy’s Bar on High Street, which is currently a storage space.

This will lead to the creation of a new restaurant with approximately 35 seats, and a new bar in the front of house.

The rear portion of the floor will contain the kitchen and bathroom facilities. A new stairs will also be put in for an easy connection between the floors.

A conservation report submitted with the planning application states that none of the proposed works will involve the removal of any of the original fabric of the building.

“They are, in essence, just the addition of a new stairs to the ground floor and first floor to open the upper floor to a more sustainable use.”

“No sub-basement level works or excavation of any kind are being proposed or carried out. Accordingly, we are of the opinion that we do not require the input of an archaeologist.”

“The building should be preserved and conserved as close as possible to its original state of detail and finish. The signs of wear and tear that create the aesthetics of age should be retained at all costs as an honest expression of the age of the building.”

The plans also include the reinstatement of the second floor of the building as a two-bedroom apartment.

A decision on this planning application is due from Galway City Council by January 31 of 2024.

Lecturer in Sports Exercise and Nutrition, School of Science, ATU.

Atlantic Technological University has been awarded €210,000 in EU funding for projects furthering sustainable regional development.

The funding has been awarded under EU GREEN, an alliance of European Universities aimed at fostering collaborative research on sustainable practices. The alliance has nine universities located in peripheral regions of Europe.

In November, ATU responded with alliance partners to the first annual seed funding call and this week learned that 23 ATU researchers’ joint research proposals were successful.

In the new year, they will collaborate with partners across the EU GREEN alliance to share skills and build capacity in these new projects spanning many of the sustainable development goals.

Dr Orla Flynn, President of ATU said, “I am delighted to see that so many of our ATU researchers are already engaging in building research collaborations with our EU GREEN partners across Europe.”

“These seed projects will develop research knowledge and team building across the university alliance.”

“The leadership and participation of ATU researchers in these seed funding projects builds capacity for larger funded projects and a more sustainable future in our regions”.

The BASE Project, led by Dr John Scahill, and ATU team, will survey and explore the sustainability-related education practices and perceptions of academic and research staff across the EU Green partner universities.

BASE includes a multidisciplinary group of academics and researchers from across the partner Universities and was the top-scoring project application.

Dr Lisa Ryan, ATU Head of School of Science and Computing (Acting), said, “We are thrilled to receive seed funding for our EU green projects, particularly focusing on innovative initiatives aimed at enhancing both environmental sustainability and human wellbeing.”

“Our exciting projects are focused on developing personalised physical exercise programmes using clinical data and the mental health of university students.”

“We are very grateful to collaborate with such outstanding universities across Europe as part of the EU Green”.

Other projects are TAILEXER, tailored physical exercise from the integration of omic, clinical and lifestyle data to prevent cardiovascular diseases, and MHUS which explores the mental health of university students and associated factors between countries.

Research has shown that physical exercise is an effective therapeutic tool to deal with cardiovascular diseases.

However, the success of these preventive programmes depends on the ability to identify the population at risk and to apply tailored physical exercise interventions.

The purpose will be to integrate data to define the cardiovascular risk level of an adult population.

It will then to propose tailored physical exercise programmes that focus on those physical condition factors most necessary for each person according to their health status.

Dr James Hanrahan, lecturer, Department of Marketing Tourism and Sport, School of Business and Social Science, is leading a Project called NOTES (Net-zerO challenge for Tourism EducatorS).

This will assess and identify the skills and training required by the tourism industry. This project will aid curricula design to provide skilled graduates to facilitate the transition towards Net Zero.
