Gardaí are renewing their appeal to the public for help in tracing the whereabouts of Volodymyr Bykadorov who has been missing from Kilcormac in Co. Offaly since Tuesday, 26 March.

38-year-old Volodymyr is described as around 6 feet 2 inches tall with a medium build.

He is bald with blue eyes, and when last seen he was wearing a black puffer jacket and carrying a black backpack.

Gardaí are concerned for his well-being and suspect he may be in the Dublin area.

Anyone with information on Volodymyr’s whereabouts is asked to contact Birr Garda Station on 057 9169710, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111 or any Garda Station.

The CEO of Galway Chamber, Kenny Deery, has this morning declared his intention to run as an Independent candidate for Galway City Council in the upcoming local elections.

Mr Deery will add his name to the ballot paper in the Galway City West constituency after deciding not to seek an extension to his current contract with the Chamber when it ends in early summer.

Launching his election campaign at Blackrock Pier early this morning, Deery said that his candidacy is born out of “a deep frustration at how our city is being held back by the dysfunctionality of local government in Galway”.

“Right now, critical issues for residents, workers and families in Galway – like transport, housing and efficient local services – are not being tackled.”

“Business opportunities are being lost to the city and expansion plans are stymied because vital infrastructure is not being delivered.”

“Local councillors do not make all the decisions on infrastructure, but they have a powerful voice and they have a duty to use that voice fully to serve Galway’s needs.”

A prominent business leader in the city, Deery states that he is passionate about the need for a ‘One Galway’ approach to local government in the city and county.

His election promises state that he will effect that change from within, and is urging residents, businesses and organisations across the constituency to put their trust in him.

“I am not interested in taking a seat for the sake of taking a seat; it is not a personal prize. I want to be elected so that I can effect change for you and for our city. We need a ‘One Galway’ approach, with everyone singing from the same hymn sheet.”

The 2024 local elections for all of Ireland’s city and county councils will take place on June 7 this year, the same date as the European Parliament elections.

Maroon and White Swim or Splash returns to Ladies Beach this month

Galway’s Maroon and White swim or splash returns to Ladies Beach, Salthill next Sunday, 14 April at 10am.

The challenge is to dip, dash or plunge into the sea to raise vital funds for the Rahoon Newcastle GAA club and Galway Autism Partnership (GAP).

Salthill will be awash with the Galway colours as both organisations continue to promote inclusion and participation in sport and other healthy outdoor activities.

For Rahoon Newcastle GAA member Tony Óg Regan, this sense of inclusion is vital.

“We are absolutely delighted to be partnering with Galway Autism Partnership for the second Maroon and White Swim or Splash,” he said.

“Last year’s event brought such joy and created a wonderful sense of togetherness and inclusion in our community. We are so excited to have this event to continue to create an inclusive and accepting community.”

April is autism acceptance and awareness month and proceeds from the Maroon and White sea swim or splash will also benefit the work of Galway Autism Partnership, a community-based charity dedicated to providing services and support to autistic people and their families living in Galway city and county.

Máire Bríd Ní Chonghaile, General Manager of Galway Autism Partnership, said that the charity event “means the world to us.”

“It’s absolutely fantastic to partner with Rahoon/Newcastle GAA for the second Maroon and White Swim or Splash,” she said

“Last year’s event was filled with fun, energy and a wonderful sense of inclusivity in the community. All at GAP are looking forward to a great day again on April 14th and it’s a fantastic way to celebrate Autism Acceptance Month.”

Local drum troupe Drumadore and retro DJ Flako will herald the start of the fun-family event, with face painting and a colour dash, before you splash.

Tony Óg Regan said the Maroon and White swim is a chance to provide essential funds for the club and to continue their many programmes for families throughout the year.

One such initiative – the All-Stars programme – was devised specifically for children with additional needs to learn fundamental movement skills in camogie and hurling.

This ignited the spark to work with Galway Autism Partnership on the charity sea swim as they focus on the value of inclusion.

Registration to the Maroon and White charity sea swim or splash in aid of the Rahoon Newcastle GAA club and Galway Autism Partnership is €25.

Lough Derg lifeboat comes to the aid of boat left adrift

The Lough Derg lifeboat came to the aid of a stranded boat with fouled propellers on the lake over the weekend.

On Saturday, March 30 Valentia Coast Guard requested Lough Derg RNLI lifeboat ‘Jean Spier’ to assist a lone sailor on a 35ft cruiser with fouled propellers and adrift in Dromineer Bay.

The lifeboat, with helm Owen Cavanagh and crew Doireann Kennedy, Tom Hayes and Ania Skrzypczynska-Tucker on board, launched at 5:28pm. Winds were south-easterly, Force 3 with good visibility.

At 5.42pm the lifeboat was alongside the casualty vessel. The skipper was safe and well and wearing a lifejacket.

The skipper explained that as the wind had dropped they were unable to sail home, and a line overboard had fouled their propellers so they couldn’t motor back to harbour.

Given the location on the navigation channel, and the hour, the helm decided the safest course of action was to assist the casualty vessel back to the nearest safe harbour.

At 6:02pm the casualty vessel was secured alongside in Dromineer Harbour. The lifeboat departed the scene and was back at the Station by 6:10pm.

Peter Kennedy, Launching Authority at Lough Derg RNLI advises boat users to, “stow lines carefully and always make sure someone on the shore knows where you are going and who to call if you don’t return on time”.

Community and voluntary groups across County Galway are being allocated nearly €300k in funding for events, services, and projects.

The 267 community and voluntary groups have been awarded funding for projects and events from playground upgrades to pollinator planting and from arts festivals to graveyard maintenance.

Galway County Council have approved €276,830 in grant funding under the local authority’s Community Support Schemes, in addition to €18,000 under Fáilte Ireland’s Festival & Participate Events Programme.

Cllr. Liam Carroll, Cathaoirleach of Galway County Council stated, “On behalf of the Elected Members, I want to thank all community groups who work tirelessly for their local communities and thrive to make our local areas a better place to live, work and visit.”

“Galway County Council’s Community Support Schemes this year attracted a high level of interest, which is reflective of the level of voluntary work ongoing across the county.”

The Community Support Schemes encourage community and voluntary groups to take an active part in the development of their communities by providing small-scale funding for projects which are of benefit to their local community and improve the economic, community and cultural aspects of their surrounding areas.

Grants awarded this year range from support to improve local amenities and support for groups who promote and increase knowledge and awareness of the arts, heritage and to Irish language, to collaborative business promotional initiatives, festivals and participative events that seek to increase footfall in towns and villages and drive economic growth.

Liam Conneally, Chief Executive of Galway County Council commented, “The Community Support Schemes will enable over a quarter of a million euro to be invested in the local community and voluntary sector.”

“This investment would not be possible without the work and volunteerism provided by our communities and citizens who play a vital part in keeping communities alive and improving the quality of life and wellbeing in Galway.”

Four students in the School of Business at ATU Galway-Mayo have won first place in the 2024 West Canada Business Competition hosted by Douglas College, Vancouver.

Tomas Feerick, third year accounting degree student from Monivea, Co Galway; Panna Miko, fourth year marketing and sales degree student from Galway city; Nicole O’Reilly, fourth year business degree student from Ballyjamesduff, Co Cavan, and Martin Lohan, fourth year business degree student from Barnaderg, Tuam, Co Galway competed against teams from colleges across western Canada from 8 to 10 March in Vancouver.

In addition, the team won 2nd prize in the Strategic Plan category and student Panna Miko won 2nd place in the individual overall category, great achievements in the face of very stiff competition.

The competition involved students using specialist simulation software to “run” a company, make decisions, receive feedback on the success of their decisions and make changes to their business strategy as the competition progresses.

A panel of judges from business and industry assessed the competition, and the various teams were judged on aspects such as their strategic business plan, team presentations and the success of their decisions.

At the end of a hectic three days of the competition, the winners were announced at a gala dinner in Vancouver, and the team from the School of Business at ATU Galway-Mayo were announced as outright winners.

Dr Seamus Lennon, Head of School of Business, ATU Galway-Mayo, said, “The success of our student team is a fantastic achievement.”

“Our business degrees are designed to be applied in nature, and with their lectures, involve a lot of hands-on work in computer labs where the theory is put into practice.”

Mayor of Galway City Cllr Eddie Hoare has raised a peace flag in Eyre Square to call for peace in a troubled time in the world.

At the March 2024 Ordinary Council meeting, the Elected Members of Galway City Council passed a motion proposed by Mayor of the City of Galway, Cllr Eddie Hoare, to fly a Peace Flag in Eyre Square, for the duration of this Council.

The Peace Flag was raised by Mayor Hoare in Eyre Square beside Browne Doorway, on Tuesday, March 26.

The flag is flown to show support for all those whose lives have been affected by conflict, demonstrating hope for peace. A number of local authorities across the country are flying the flag.

Mayor Hoare commented, “The people of Ireland truly know the value of peace and conflict resolution, and we are grateful to live in a part of the world that is safe for our children to grow up in.”

Teenager killed after being hit by car

Galway Daily news girl injured by firework

A teenager has died after being hit by a car on the N17 in Co. Mayo on Saturday evening.

Gardai and emergency services attended the scene of a traffic collision on the N17 at Barnacarroll, Claremorris yesterday.

The collision occurred at approximately 9:20pm and involved a car and a pedestrian.

The pedestrian, a male aged in his teens, was pronounced deceased at the scene.

His body has been removed to Mayo University Hospital where a post mortem will take place.

No other injuries have been reported.

The road is currently closed for examination by forensic collision investigators. Local diversions are in place.

Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to this collision to come forward.

Any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam), and were travelling on the N17 between Claremorris and Knock yesterday evening between 8:45pm and 9:30pm are asked to make this footage available to Gardaí.

Weather conditions over the weekend are expected to be mixed with a combination of sunny periods followed by rain and showers.

Water temperatures at this time of year are relatively cold and inexperienced or occasional open water swimmers should take care to slowly climatise and carefully manage their time in the water. Always be alert to the risk of cold water shock.

If sailing or motorboating:

  • Always wear an appropriate lifejacket
  • Always carry a means of calling and signalling for help
  • When engaging in any type of boating activity; Ensure there is an emergency action plan in place, and everybody has an onboard briefing
  • Get the right level of training for your craft

Co. Galway’s Michelle Casserly lands dream job as ALDI's Chief Easter Egg Tasting Officer

ALDI’s hunr for Ireland’s most talented chocolate connoisseurs has concluded, with Michelle Casserly from Oranmore securing the position as ALDI’s Chief Easter Egg Taster.

In early March, Aldi called for chocolate lovers across the nation to enter the competition to be in with the chance of landing the sweetest job in Ireland.

Applications flooded in from every corner of the country, with each applicant eager to showcase their passion for all things chocolate and confectionery.

Ultimately, Michelle’s knowledge and passion for sweet treats earned herself the coveted title.

Michelle Casserly, alongside two other lucky winners, Leo Doyle from Co. Wicklow and Amy Reynolds from Co. Tipperary, received a selection of Aldi Easter Eggs to sample, taste and review.

As part of their job description, the Chief Easter Egg Tasting Officer’s will provide their eggs-pertise to help the supermarket chain’s buying team confirm their 2025 Easter selection.

“I am delighted to have accepted this new role as Aldi Chief Easter Egg Tasting Officer,” said Michelle.

“Now, I’m looking forward to tasting these delicious eggs from Aldi, let this tasty challenge begin!”

Free e-waste and battery recycling events for County householders

Householders across County Galway are being encouraged to bring their batteries and electrical waste for free recycling next month.

Galway County Council is organising a set of free collection days being held in Mountbellew, Loughrea, Gort, Maam Cross and Oughterard during April and May.

Hosted by WEEE Ireland and supported by Galway County Council, the annual initiative saw over 2,720 tonnes of electrical waste collected in the county last year.

Anything with a plug, battery or cable can be recycled for free on the day, including old washing machines, TVs, toasters and kettles, electronic tools and toys, cables, IT equipment, mobile phones, remote controls and batteries.

Cllr. Liam Carroll, Cathaoirleach of Galway County Council said, “With old electric waste items and batteries lying around many households, these drop-off days provide a great opportunity to recycle these items for free.”

£This initiative ensures waste is diverted from landfill, raw materials are recovered for reuse, and hazardous materials are safely and responsibly disposed of. “

The series of events kicks off on Saturday April 6 at the Oughterard GAA car park followed by Loughrea Mart (April 13), Mountbellew-Moylough GAA Club (April 20), Maam Cross Mart (April 27) and Gort Co-Operative Mart (May 4).

Collections will be accepted from 10am to 4pm each day on those dates.

“Recycling e-waste is incredibly beneficial for both the environment, the county, and the economy,” said Liam Conneally, Chief Executive at Galway County Council.

“There are many old items still lying around a lot of households and we are delighted to work with WEEE Ireland in offering householders the opportunity to recycle these for free.”

Eileen Ruane, Director of Services commented “We look forward to working with WEEE Ireland and Galway householders to hopefully recycle a record-breaking amount of electronic waste.

“All items collected this year will help County Galway meet national e-waste recycling targets for 2024.”

Galway County Council provides a WEEE collection service for householders on an ongoing basis at its Civic Amenity and Recycling Sites in Tuam, Clifden and Ballinasloe. Visit  www.galway.ie for more information.

Tigh Derrane has been plunged into complete darkness and Manus is taken aback to find Sonny is at death’s doorstep after an electric shock.

Manus is under pressure to keep Sonny conscious while they wait for an ambulance and a delirious Sonny begins to spill family secrets.

Meanwhile, Mack and Tadhg are tasked with finding a defibrillator and Sonny is becoming weaker and weaker by the second. Will Manus be able to keep Sonny alive until help arrives?

Niall reluctantly reveals information about Mack to Frankie and starts to feel the pressure when Frankie wants to know more about Diana.

However, when Niall insists on keeping Bobbi Lee out of things, Frankie threatens his family. Niall is left with no choice but to reveal a secret about Diana, in the hopes that Frankie will let him off the hook.

But has Niall underestimated how dangerous Frankie could be?

Diana becomes nervous when Sonia reveals that she has suddenly remembered something, and to make matters worse, the memory seems to be about Diana.

But as Sonia tries to dig deeper, Diana feeds her with lies in an attempt to misdirect her. Later on, Sonia becomes frustrated when she cannot access anymore memories and takes it out on Colm.

But has Sonia finally had a breakthrough and could her memory be coming back?

Cóilí Jackie is left feeling disappointed when Vera rejects his invitation to try out his catapult. He gets straight to work, determined on spending time with Vera.

When Tadhg tries to mortify Vera, Cóilí Jackie realises what he needs to do and swoops in to stand up for her. Later on, he tries to woo Vera with a bet, but will she agree to his terms?

Planning approval for 148 homes in Galway City

Planning permission has been granted for a residential development of 148 homes on the outskirts of Galway City.

An Bord Pleanála has granted planning permission to Cairn Homes Ltd for a residential development on land south of the Letteragh Road.

The plans were for 93 houses, 20 duplex units, and 35 apartments in a housing estate next to the existing Sliabh Ríoga development.

The proposed four-storey apartment building would be the most prominent element of the estate, located at the entrance facing onto the Letteragh Road.

Galway City Council refused planning permission for the estate back in November 2023.

In refusing planning for the development the city council said that it could interfere with the N6 Ring Road, and also cited the lack of a creche facility along with insufficient open space.

Cairn Homes appealed this decision to An Bord Pleanála, which overturned the council’s rejection.

The appeal stated that the design of the estate would not encroach on the Ring Road, and that this was confirmed by the design team for the road project.

It also stated there is sufficient childcare capacity in the surrounding area, but that a creche had also been added to the apartment building after the council’s request for further information.

The three areas of open space within the estate were designed based on site constraints with the proposed N6 and N59 Link Road at two boundaries.

Planning permission was ultimately granted by An Bord Pleanála with 24 conditions attached.
