Galway Salthill Rotary Club recently presented a cheque to Neil Johnson, CEO of Croí, in memory of their longstanding member, the late Benny O’Connor.

The donation has added a fourth automated external defibrillator (AED) to Salthill and is centrally located beside Salthill car park on the wall of the toilet block facing the sea.

Croí would like to take this opportunity to thank the O’Connor family and Galway Salthill Rotary Club for their generosity and support, as well as Galway City Council for facilitating the location of this lifesaving medical equipment.

An AED, or automated external defibrillator, is used to help those experiencing sudden cardiac arrest.

It is a sophisticated, yet easy-to-use, medical device that can analyse the heart’s rhythm and, if necessary, deliver an electrical shock, or defibrillation, to help the heart re-establish an effective rhythm.

Pat Hobbert, President of Galway Salthill Rotary, said the club’s Kick the Wall collection box embedded in the wall at Blackrock has been a considerable success.

“For the last eleven years it has enabled the club to support local charities through the generosity of the Galway public, the defibrillator being an example.”

County councillor calls on TDs to back motion to extend eviction ban

Galway daily news Anonymous €1.5 million charity bequest to deliver social housing in Galway

Loughrea Cllr Declan Kelly is calling on all TDs from the county to support Sinn Féin’s motion to extend the eviction ban until the end of next January.

The Independent councillor has said that to do otherwise will cause “unimaginable distress and anxiety” for numerous families.

“Almost a year ago, President Higgins described the situation regarding housing in Ireland as a ‘great, great failure’,” said Cllr Kelly.

“I would go further and say that the housing situation and the government’s handling of it has been nothing short of catastrophic.”

He said that in Galway county, there are approximately 3,500 on the waiting list for houses with almost 9% of that figure on the list for more than 11 years.

“How does it come to pass that some 300 people are left more than a decade waiting for a home that they can call their own?

“Despite this appalling situation, the coalition government is prepared to put the party whip system before the needs of people and families across the country and force TDs to support the ending of the eviction ban.”

Cllr Kelly said TDs should put their “consciences before party membership, to do the right thing and to support Sinn Féin’s motion on extending the ban until the end of next January.”

“If they do not, then voters should send a very clear message to government parties at the next local and general elections,” he added.

People Before Profit to launch ‘Galway Transport Vision’

Galway Daily news City Councillor calls for unlimited travel public transport ticket

People Before Profit Galway has produced a document putting forward the party’s vision for the future of transport in Galway.

They will hold a launch of the document on Friday 24 March at 2pm, downstairs in Áras na nGael, Dominick Street.

Speaking at the launch will be People Before Profit TD Gino Kenny, and the party’s three candidates for the 2024 local elections in Galway city – Adrian Curran (City Central), Maisie McMaster (City West) and Denman Rooke (City East).

The launch event is open to the public and copies of the ‘Galway Transport Vision’ document will be available on the day.

Speaking ahead of the event, Adrian Curran said: “As our document points out, Galway is the most congested city of its size in Europe. The negative consequences of this are felt by us all, in terms of time wasted sitting in traffic, fuel expenses, air pollution and more.

“The document is intended to provoke a conversation and debate about the future of transport in Galway. In sections on bus, rail and active travel, we put forward a vision that could improve quality of life, reduce congestion and save people money.”

Denman Rooke said despite the rhetoric of the Green Party and others, Ireland is ‘utterly failing to take the actions necessary’ to reduce emissions.

“Last year we had the highest increase in greenhouse gas emissions of any EU country, at 17%. Transport is one of the most significant contributors to those emissions. It is vital we rapidly move to end the current reliance on private cars.

“This can be done through urgently improving the alternatives – bus, rail, cycling and walking. These must be enhanced to become attractive alternatives to the car for the journeys people make.”

Maisie McMaster said her party shows how fare-free public transport with an increased capacity is perfectly possible.

“In order to achieve this and the other types of changes called for in the Galway Transport Vision document, we need to break from the dependence on the private market and the for-profit model in the provision of public services.”

Launch of ‘On the Blanket’ book to be held in Gort

Galway Daily news Gort awarded €100,000 for town centre revitalisation plan

The south Galway launch of Eoghan ‘Gino’ Mac Cormaic’s book On the Blanket will be held at Harte’s Bar in Gort on Thursday 30 March.

Eoghan will be in conversation with Louis O’Hara and will read from his book and reflect on his time in the H-Blocks and on the blanket and no-wash protests and there will also be a Q&A with the audience.

The event will begin at 8pm, and music will be provided on the evening by Pat O’Neill.

Eoghan Mac Cormaic was arrested at the age of 20 in 1976 and spent the next fifteen years in prison in the H Blocks of Long Kesh before moving to Galway in 1991.

Along with many others in the H-Blocks and in Armagh Women’s Prison, he began a prison protest to win back Special Category Status being denied them in 1976.

What developed became known as the Blanket Protest, an almost unbelievable set of prison conditions and protest which would eventually lead to the death of ten republican prisoners on hunger strike in 1981.

Mac Cormaic spent a total of 1,960 days on ‘the Blanket’ and no-work protest, and his story details – often in a wry and humorous way – the life endured by the 350 men and women who faced down this major British policy and eventually won their demands.

For anyone wanting to learn what life was like in the protest wings and indeed to understand the causes and motivations of those on protest, this book is a must-read and this public event a unique opportunity to hear a first-hand account of those historic days between 1976 and 1981.

University of Galway Students’ Union CÉIM academic peer learning programme is celebrating ten years of supporting 1st year students at the university.

Based on the internationally renowned Peer Assisted Learning model, CÉIM now offers weekly peer learning sessions to over 2,000 University of Galway students and this figure is growing all the time.

The programme has been extremely successful at helping students to transition to third level education, make friends, succeed academically and progress to 2nd year over the past decade.

Students meet in small groups with fellow 1st year students and trained student leaders from higher years to discuss coursework and have some fun.

Feedback about the programme has been overwhelmingly positive and research shows that regular attendees attain higher grades on average in comparison to non-attendees.

Students’ Union President Sai Gujulla said: “CÉIM is unique within Irish higher education as it delivers peer learning at scale via a strong partnership between students, staff and the Students’ Union.

“We are delighted to now be celebrating ten years of this award-winning programme and look forward to CÉIM being rolled out to more 1st year students in the coming academic year and beyond.”

CÉIM Director Amber Walsh Olesen added: “From small beginnings, CÉIM has grown into a thriving network of learning communities, supporting students throughout their entire 1st year at university.

“None of this would be possible without the dedication and generosity of the CÉIM student leaders, who volunteer their time to encourage and support 1st year students.”

The support schemes are for the development of projects relating to social enterprise and business ideas.

Údarás na Gaeltachta has worked closely with Gaeltacht community development organisations in this area over recent years.

Under the scheme, a budget of over €210,000 is available to support eligible projects in the sector.

Funding is also available under the Support Scheme for the development of a business idea linked to social enterprise, with funding of up to €5,000 per project available, in partnership with the Department of Rural and Community Development.

Rónán Mac Con Iomaire, Director of Regional Community Development and Language Planning, said that social enterprise is invaluable insofar as it empowers communities.

“These projects provide additional services, create profit and essential employment, and strengthen the community development organisations themselves.

“The excellent facility here at the Seaweed Centre in Leitir Mealláin shows how community organisations can undertake ambitious high-quality projects, using the Social Enterprise model.

“These support schemes will make it easier for organisations looking to undertake social enterprise projects for the first time and enable organisations already active in this field to further develop their ideas; we hope that they will encourage community organisations to undertake worthwhile projects in all Gaeltacht areas.”

Water Safety appeal from Coast Guard, RNLI and Water Safety Ireland for long weekend

Galway Daily news Water Safety appeal from Coast Guard, RNLI and Water Safety Ireland for long weekend

For the long holiday weekend, the RNLI, Coast Guard, and Water Safety Ireland have issued a joint water safety appeal, asking people to stay safe when in, near or on the water.

The organisations are urging the public to stay away from waterways if consuming alcohol.

There are an average of nine drownings in Ireland every month and alcohol is a contributory factor in one third.

Water Safety Ireland’s Deputy CEO, Roger Sweeney said “At this time of year many people will enjoy family trips to waterways nationwide.”

“However, it is important people remember to supervise children closely and not to drink alcohol when supervising children near water.”

“Alcohol is a contributory factor in over 30% of drowning incidents and an individual’s judgement and reaction times can be significantly impaired.”

Water temperatures are still cold, meaning cold water shock and hypothermia are risks that can affect everyone. To avoid this during swims, people should acclimatise to the water slowly to get used to the cold and warm up quickly upon exiting the water.

The Coast Guard, RNLI and Water Safety Ireland advise everyone intending to take part in any water-based activity or coastal walks to make sure they check in advance what they should do to keep safe.

If heading out on the water or visiting the coast:

  • Never mix alcohol with water activities
  • Always check the weather and tides
  • Carry a reliable means of raising the alarm (VHF radio, Personal Locator Beacon or fully charged mobile phone)
  • Tell someone where you are going and what time you will be back
  • Wear a suitable Personal Flotation Device when boating or angling
  • Watch out for incoming tides to avoid getting cut off

If you are swimming:

  • Water temperatures are still cold at this time of the year, consider wearing a wetsuit to stay warm
  • Acclimatise slowly
  • Wear a bright swimming cap and consider a tow float to increase your visibility
  • Never swim alone and always ensure that your activity is being monitored by a colleague

Coast Guard Operations Manager Micheal O’Toole said, “St Patrick’s weekend is a traditional start to the holiday season and with extended daylight people will be keen to get out and about.”

“Always carry a means of communication. If engaging in coastal walks only use routes with which you are familiar or routes that are well marked and in regular use. Be attentive to erosion or changes that may have occurred over the winter period.”

Galway Daily news Health Officials urge public to stay safe this St. Patrick's weekend

Over the St Patrick’s Day long weekend, health officials in the West are encouraging the public to consider all care options before attending Emergency Departments.

Emergency Departments (EDs) continue to be extremely busy with high numbers of patients attending who require admission.

This means that patients who attend EDs for routine and non-urgent treatment will experience very long waiting times over the coming weekend.

Just on the morning of Thursday, March 16 there were 60 patients on trolleys at University Hospital Galway, and another 16 at Portiuncula Hospital.

Tony Canavan, CEO of the Saolta Group said, “Anyone who suspects they may be facing an emergency situation should of course come to the Emergency Department and they will be seen and treated.”

“However, we would ask those who may be in a non-urgent situation to help our staff through a challenging time by looking at other healthcare options where possible.”

The Saolta Hospital Group is appealing to the public to help ensure hospitals are best able to look out for patients who need urgent and emergency care.

Breda Crehan-Roche, Chief Officer Community Healthcare West added, “If you urgently need to see a GP out of hours, please contact Westdoc on 0818 360 000.”

“Westdoc provides urgent out-of-hours GP care for patients of participating practices in Galway, Mayo & Roscommon.”

Stand out performers Bundee Aki and Mack Hansen will both be starting for Ireland in this weekend’s push for the Six Nations Grand Slam.

Ireland will face England in the Aviva Stadium this Saturday with the Grand Slam on the line, the first time Ireland will ever have won this at home.

World Player of the Year Josh van der Flier will win his 50th cap on Saturday. He lines out in an unchanged back row as Caelan Doris is named to start alongside him and Peter O’Mahony.

In the front row, Dan Sheehan has been passed fit and will start with Andrew Porter and Tadhg Furlong on either side of the scrum. Rob Herring comes in on the bench in place of Ronan Kelleher.

Ryan Baird, who came on for the injured Iain Henderson in Scotland, will partner James Ryan in the second row with Kieran Treadwell named in the replacements.

Captain Johnny Sexton will be partnered at half-back by Jamison Gibson Park and Robbie Henshaw comes into the centre to play alongside Bundee Aki.

The back three of Hugo Keenan, Mack Hansen and James Lowe start for a fifth consecutive Six Nations fixture.

Mack Hansen has had a hell of a year, and wowed the crowds once again last weekend where he was named the Player of the Match.

The 24 year old scored Ireland’s first try of the game, and was crucial in a number of turnovers and attacks in the second half.

This is also going to be a big game for Johnny Sexton. Last week saw him draw equal with all-time Six Nations points scorer Ronan O’Gara’s record of 557, and he can outright claim the top sport against England this weekend.

Jimmy O’Brien come into the match day 23 to join Cian Healy, Tom O’Toole, Jack Conan, Conor Murray and Ross Byrne who all featured last weekend in Murrayfield.

Ireland’s final game of the Championship will be broadcast live on VIRGIN and ITV television and RTE and BBCNI radio.

But even with this, some Australian gamblers prefer gambling in land-based casinos such as those available in Galway.

The best thing about gambling in Ireland is that it is regulated by one central authority, which means there are no restrictions on where you can play or how much money you can spend.

Along with the games and entertainment, casinos also offer a wide range of food and drinks. You can choose from a variety of healthy options like salads, smoothies, and juices, as well as traditional favorites like fish and chips, Irish soda bread, boxty, Shepherd’s pie, and more. Australian players who want to stick to some more international meals can opt for burgers, pastas, and pizza.

Drinks are also available at casinos- from alcoholic beverages to non-alcoholic ones such as coffee or tea. As far as alcoholic beverages are concerned- you can get anything from ales to spirits such as whiskey or brandy – and they might even be brewed locally!

What Are the Main Differences From Other Casinos?

Even though casinos in Galways offer pretty much the same services to their players as any other land-based casinos, the biggest thing that distinguishes them is the atmosphere. The pleasant staff and friendly locals will definitely make the gaming experience unforgettable. Additionally,  Galway has a lot to offer to tourists apart from casinos.

Galway is a great place to visit for its scenic beauty, historical sites, and attractions. It’s also well known for its festivals and events like the Galway Races. The city hosts numerous festivals each year, including the Oyster Festival (September), International Film Fleadh (July), Oyster Festivals (October), and Food Festival (April). So, Australian players coming here to roll the dice will actually have a lot of opportunities for recreational activities, sightseeing, and exploring local cuisine.

Are Online Casinos Becoming More Popular in the City?

Online gambling sites in Galway are also on the rise – pretty much like everywhere else in the world. Ireland is a big market for online gambling, and it is also a popular pastime. There are tons of online gambling options available to Irish players, including online casinos, the National Lottery, bingo, sports betting, and much more. The Galway and the Emerald Isle are actually  home to several operators that cater to Irish gamblers.

Conclusion

We think that the reason why casinos in Galway are popular among Australian players is that they offer a safe and fun environment to gamble in. They can enjoy their trip with friends, family, or loved ones without having to worry about ruining their vacation with bad luck at the table!
