University of Galway’s J.E. Cairnes School of Business & Economics has hosted a leadership conference and reunion gala, as part of its 50th anniversary celebrations of its Master of Business Administration (MBA) programme.

During the event, the University announced plans to establish a new University of Galway MBA Alumni Network for more than 600 MBA graduates who have come through the programme, many of whom have gone on to senior leadership roles across sectors nationally and globally.

The leadership conference and reunion gala served as a platform to showcase the outstanding expertise and experiences of the MBA alumni who have contributed significantly to their respective industries over several decades.

The conference, opened by President of University of Galway, Professor Ciarán Ó hÓgartaigh, featured panel sessions focusing on the impact of the MBA on business and society; talent development for future success; career reflections from alumni; and a CEO Leaders’ forum hosted by Danny McCoy, Director of Ibec.

Since it was founded in the 1972/73 academic year, University of Galway’s MBA has established itself as one of the leading programmes of its kind in the country, providing exceptional business education and preparing leaders for the challenges of the ever-evolving global marketplace.

Speaking at the event, Professor Ciarán Ó hÓgartaigh, President of University of Galway, congratulated the University’s J.E. Cairnes School of Business and Economics on 50 successful years of the MBA programme.

“The programme, and more importantly our graduates have made a significant impact to the world in the last five decades, helping to create the capacity, talent and leadership that would not otherwise be here,” he said.

“The establishment of programmes such as the MBA are inflection points, envisioned by the people involved, facilitated by the place, responding to the needs of the time.

“We are facing new challenges now, in social cohesion, health and wellbeing, and climate action. And University of Galway is stepping up again to identify and respond to future opportunities and challenges.

“In fifty years’ time, what will people say we did now that made a positive difference across the decades?”

Beyond the bed: the importance of emotional intimacy in intimate relationships

0

In the early stages of a relationship, it’s easy to get caught up in the romantic whirlwind and forget that emotional intimacy is just as important as physical intimacy. But while sex may be fun and exciting, it doesn’t leave a deep sense of connection. Emotional intimacy takes many forms, but one of the most powerful is emotional vulnerability. You know that feeling when you’re so emotionally invested in someone’s personal life or struggles that it hurts to see them suffer? That’s what I mean here: when you are able to share your most painful moments with another person without fear of being judged or rejected for it, and vice versa.

However, it is important to remember that emotional intimacy should not be confused with seeking companionship alone. Occasionally, some people may choose to seek additional support in their lives and opt for Galway escorts, who can provide pleasant and fun companionship, but are no substitute for the true emotional connection sought in a committed relationship.

Emotional intimacy takes many forms, but one of the most powerful is emotional vulnerability

Emotional intimacy is a two-way street. To be emotionally intimate with someone, you have to be willing and able to share your feelings with that person. This means being honest about what you think and feel, even when it’s uncomfortable or embarrassing.

Emotional vulnerability is a sign of trust, and when we trust each other, we can be more open with our vulnerabilities because we know that our partner will support us rather than judge or reject us for them.

Be open and honest with your partner about how you feel

In a loving and supportive relationship, it is important to be honest with your partner about how you feel. You should also be honest about your thoughts and intentions. If there is something bothering you or bothering you, tell them.

Likewise, if there is something that makes you happy or excites you, let them know! Letting each other know what we like about each other helps keep the passion alive in our relationships.

Acknowledge your emotions and express them in a healthy way

Emotional intimacy is an important part of a healthy relationship. It is important to acknowledge your emotions and express them in a healthy way, rather than letting them control you or repressing them. Here are some tips on how to do this:

Know your emotions. If you feel confused about what you are feeling, try journaling about it or ask yourself questions like “What do I want?” or “How would my partner feel if I said this?

Express yourself constructively by saying what is true for you without judging or blaming others (unless they are also present). For example, say something like “I get frustrated when we don’t talk about our plans before we make plans” rather than “You always leave me hanging!

Be aware of your partner’s emotions as well

Once you’ve reached the point where you feel comfortable sharing your emotions with each other, it’s time to work on being aware of your partner’s feelings. This can be difficult because people often don’t know how their partner is feeling unless they ask them directly or see obvious signs that something is wrong, such as crying or slamming doors. But there are ways around this.

If one person tries harder than the other in an intimate relationship, the less enthusiastic one may resent it and stop trying (or vice versa). It is important, not only for you, but also for your partner, that you both strive to make each other feel loved and cared for at all times.

When you are emotionally intimate with another person, your connection becomes stronger than ever

Emotional intimacy is an important part of a healthy relationship. It is the feeling of connection and closeness with another person, and it can be cultivated in ways that go beyond physical intimacy. It strengthens the bond and builds a solid foundation for mutual growth.

Emotional intimacy has many benefits: it makes you feel loved, accepted and understood by your partner; it helps build trust; it increases self-esteem; it strengthens communication skills between partners; it helps resolve conflicts more easily; finally, emotional intimacy improves relationships in general! It is also important to note that emotional intimacy is not about being emotionally dependent on another person, i.e. depending on them for happiness or feeling that life would be impossible without them (this sounds like codependency).

On the contrary, true emotional intimacy involves mutual respect between two people who enjoy sharing each other’s company without needing anything from each other except each other’s presence. However, each person has his or her own needs and circumstances. Some may choose to seek additional emotional connection through services such as escorts in Ireland, who can offer a pleasant and respectful companionship in specific situations, however, it is essential to distinguish that this does not replace the genuine and committed emotional intimacy sought in a stable couple relationship.

Conclusion

In the end, emotional intimacy is about being open and honest with your partner about how you feel. It’s about acknowledging your partner’s emotions too and creating opportunities for them to be vulnerable with you. When we can do all of these things, our relationships become stronger than ever. In addition, it is important to remember that emotional intimacy is not just limited to the romantic partner. We can also cultivate it in our family relationships, close friendships, and even with new people who come into our lives. Every emotional connection we build is valuable and can nurture us in different ways.

At times, people may seek emotional experiences and connections through various options, such as call girls in Tamil Nadu, who can provide companionship and emotional support at specific times. However, it is essential to discern between these situations and building true emotional intimacy based on sincerity, openness and mutual respect in our most meaningful relationships.

Cannon calls for temporary ban on Chat GPT in govt departments

0
galway daily news chat gpt ban ireland

There are glaring inconsistencies in the different approaches by Government departments to using artificial intelligence (AI), Galway East TD Ciaran Cannon has said.

Deputy Cannon asked all Government departments about their use of AI and ChatGPT, and said that the responses he received show that there is no consistency from the different departments.

Both the Transport and Agriculture departments confirmed their use of Chat GPT to Deputy Cannon.

The Fine Gael TD said that some departments have already banned the use of the platform and that others have not.

Some departments are awaiting advice from the National Cyber Security Centre and some have already used ChatGPT on a trial basis without any solid expert guidance being in place.

“In light of this, and what we’ve seen happening with one national newspaper over the weekend, I’m calling for a complete ban on the use of Chat GPT across all government departments as and from today, until such time as the NCSC has had time to assess all of the implications of using the platform and has issued the appropriate expert guidance,” said Deputy Cannon.

“I asked the parliamentary question because I believe that there may be national security issues arising from the use of ChatGPT, particularly in the inputting of departmental data to produce the desired outputs from the platform.”

He said that right now, we have no idea where that data, some of which could be highly sensitive, is ending up and who exactly has access to it.

“I’m not suggesting for a moment that we need to permanently ban the use of ChatGPT and other AI platforms which may emerge in the coming years, in fact I’ve always been a strong advocate of the use of technology to improve outcomes.

“I readily acknowledge that in a few years time, AI will form a major part of the technology platform used by all governments, but right now we’re flying blind.”

New Local Link route from Tuam to Galway welcomed

0
Galway Daily news Public consultation opens on Cross-City Link bus corridor

Minister Anne Rabbitte has welcomed confirmation that there will be a new Local Link service commencing next Monday from Tuam to Galway.

Route 438 will operate three daily return trips seven days per week, connecting Tuam and Headford.

It will link from Corrandulla into Galway, passing Lough Corrib and provide improved connectivity to University Hospital Galway.

Commenting on the new route, Minister Rabbitte said that the launch of Route 438 is very welcome news for Tuam and the surrounding area and creates great connectivity with Headford, Corrundulla and Galway City, particularly with University Hospital Galway.

“We can’t underestimate how important it is to keep our towns and townlands connected,” said the Galway East Fianna Fáil TD.

“Local Link is such an important service and provides people with choices when choosing to travel by bus and I don’t doubt that this will be a busy route between Tuam and Galway.

“It shows the Government is listening to what people want and investing in the infrastructure people need to live their lives and have that sense of connectivity and independence that such a service brings.”

Fantasy Languages: The Top 10 Fictional Languages Fans Want to Learn

0

If you’re a fan of fantasy languages and want to learn more, there are plenty of resources available to help you on your journey. One high authority site that I highly recommend is Duolingo. While the site is primarily known for its language learning courses, they also have a selection of fantasy languages available, including High Valyrian from Game of Thrones and Klingon from Star Trek.

If you’re looking to dive into the world of fictional languages, you’re not alone. In this article, we’ll explore the top 10 most popular fictional languages that fans are trying to speak, along with some helpful tips and resources to get you started.

Another great resource is the Language Creation Society, which is dedicated to the art and craft of language creation. They offer a wealth of information on how to create your own fictional language, as well as resources for learning existing ones.

In addition, there are many books and online courses available that can help you learn your favourite fantasy languages. For example, the book “The Languages of Tolkien’s Middle-earth” by Ruth S. Noel provides a detailed look at the Elvish languages created by J.R.R. Tolkien.

When it comes to learning the most popular fictional languages, a great place to start is with the statistics. According to a recent study by AmazonSlots.com, the top 10 most popular fictional languages in order of difficulty are:

  1. Klingon (Star Trek)
  2. Dothraki (Game of Thrones)
  3. Elvish (Lord of the Rings)
  4. Na’vi (Avatar)
  5. Dovahzul (Skyrim)
  6. Parseltongue (Harry Potter)
  7. Mando’a (Star Wars)
  8. Simlish (The Sims)
  9. Huttese (Star Wars)
  10. Lapine (Watership Down)

Interestingly, there are some similarities between learning a new language and playing slot games. Both require focus, patience, and attention to detail. Additionally, some slot games have themes that incorporate elements from fantasy languages, making it even more exciting for fans to learn them.

For instance, the popular slot game “Slingo Rainbow Riches” has a theme inspired by Irish mythology, and some of the game’s symbols and phrases are in Gaelic. This has led many players to take an interest in learning the language to better understand and appreciate the game’s theme.

In conclusion, the popularity of fictional languages is a testament to the enduring appeal of fantasy worlds and their ability to captivate the imaginations of fans. Whether it’s Klingon or Elvish, learning a new language can be a fun and rewarding experience that opens up new worlds of knowledge and appreciation. Whether you choose to use online courses, books, or other materials, the key is to practise consistently and enjoy the journey of discovering a new language.

Top 5 Online Sports Betting Tips for People in Galway

0

It is not a secret that Irish people love to bet on different sports, especially football. Sports betting is a fantastic source of fun for people who want to relax at home. Many online bookmakers are offering fantastic odds on a wide range of sports betting options. Modernization of industry has certainly made things even better, especially in the last couple of years.

Becoming a sports betting expert is a long-lasting process. It requires a lot of analysis and a dose of luck to predict the outcome of the matches. Of course, you will never manage to guess them all. The outcomes of different sports events are unpredictable, and surprises are always possible. Yet are there ways to raise your chances of winning?

The answer to that question is – yes, there are ways to save yourself from major losses. In this article, we want to share some “evergreen” sports betting tips with our readers. Applying these tips will make sports betting even more interesting. Let’s find them out!

Carefully Pick a Sports Betting Website

The first thing you must do when getting involved in the sports betting industry is to find a reliable and legit online bookmaker. The online sports betting industry has exploded in the last couple of years. Many operators are trying to attract people to register on their websites differently. Unfortunately, not all of them intend to ensure a beautiful betting experience for people.

Recognizing a legit operator isn’t as difficult as you think. First, you must ensure the sports betting site you plan to register on is licensed. The license should be issued by a reputable regulatory body in the sports betting industry. Also, you should check out which layers of safety the website you plan to use offers. The safety of your data and funds must be your main priority!

After confirming that the website is legit, you can focus on other relevant features. For instance, check out which bonuses you can get for sports betting, how good the coverage of the online bookmaker is, how realistic the odds are, etc. The good news is that new sports betting sites appear daily in the Irish sports betting market. If you are looking for several options to choose from, check out all betting sites in Ireland that are legit on the link that we attached!

Read Analyses and Tips from Sports Betting Experts

It is always good to get a piece of advice from someone who has an experience in the sports betting industry. Thanks to the internet, you can now access multiple sources and find some legit and valuable sports betting tips. However, before you apply the tips you read, you must check out more details about the person sharing them. You should ask for proof of success, more details about the success rate, more information about the experience of the individual/team sharing them, etc.

Do Your Own Analyses

No one says that you need to completely accept the suggestions you get. On the contrary, we don’t suggest you always do that. Sports are, as we said, unpredictable. Surprises are always possible, and some of them are hardly predictable. That’s why we suggest you use the pieces of advice you gathered as inspiration and guidelines. After you hear what others say, do your own analyses.

So, how does a typical analytical process look? First, you need to check out the statistics. Don’t just check the table; dig deeper to find hidden factors that could influence the match’s outcome. For example, checking out Head-to-Head statistics could be valuable. There you can see the outcomes of previous matches teams you want to bet on have played. Some teams are much stronger, but their tactic may not work against certain “weaker teams”, which is a factor you must consider.

Also, it would be good to check out mainstream media and try to grab some interesting news about the teams or individuals. You may find out there that the atmosphere in the locker room isn’t quite good. People often neglect these factors, but they can significantly impact the performance of any team.

Of course, you should also carefully check how well the team you want to bet on played in the last period, who were the most valuable players, which players are injured, etc. As you see, there really are many details you have to focus on. That’s why you should not rush!

Turn Off Your Emotions

Sports are full of emotions, aren’t they? The dose of passion that people have for their favorite club is so strong, which is something that makes sports wonderful. Unfortunately, it can also make people blind and distract them from making good betting decisions. Betting on clubs that you support isn’t a good idea. You emotionally expect certain outcomes. Yet are they realistic?

Sports betting doesn’t have anything in common with emotions. On the contrary, all your decisions should be supported with analyses and statistics. That’s why we suggest Irish players avoid betting on teams they strongly support. Having a clear mind is essential here!

Organize Your Budget

Don’t neglect the importance of budget management for sports betting. Irish people need to organize their monthly income appropriately. As we said, sports betting is a source of fun, just like hanging out with people, going to a spa, or traveling. You must know at every moment how much you can afford to spend on sports betting. If you start spending more than you can afford, sports betting will become a source of stress, anxiety, and depression. The consequences are fatal, so play responsibly!

Conclusion

These are five amazing tips for sports betting that you can apply at every possible moment. It is essential to be responsible and find an appropriate sports betting site where you find the best possible offers. For better results, you should regularly follow the leagues you plan to bet on and make appropriate analyses! Are you ready to have fun?

Plans for significant upgrades to Ballinasloe Wastewater Treatment Plant

0
Galway Daily news €13 million Athenry sewer upgrades

Planning permission is being sought for major upgrades to the Ballinasloe Wastewater Treatment Plan to reduce flooding and improve quality.

Uisce Eireann has submitted plans to the county council for the demolition of the existing inlet works at the WWTP located to the south east of the town.

They then intend to build new inlet works with a new duty standby fine screens, a screenings handling unit, a vortex grit trap, and a grit classifier.

Reducing flooding is also a goal of these works, which will include building a storm overflow chamber, storm feed pumping station, bypass channel, and installing a storm water holding tank.

A planning report submitted with the application states that there is regular flooding in the grit removal chamber during periods of high rainfall, and that there is currently no storm overflow system at the plant.

“During storm conditions, storm flows also overflow at the Dunloe and Poolbeg pumping stations upstream of the WWTP.”

The new inlet works will help remove solids from the wastewater prior to it entering the treatment area, and the storm water system will reduce the discharge or untreated sewage during times of high rainfall.

Other works involved in the project will involve installing a new final effluent wash water pumping station and electrical control systems.

A decision on this planning application is due from Galway County Council by June 20 of this year.

Galway researchers identify innovative strategy for bowel cancer treatment

0
Galway daily news Day of Action for Palestine

Researchers at University of Galway studying cell interactions in bowel cancer have identified innovative strategies to enhance how the body and drug treatments fight the disease.

Colorectal cancer is a leading cause of death globally with increasing incidence in developing countries and in younger people.

In Ireland alone, there are more than 2,500 newly diagnosed cases of bowel cancer every year, with limited treatment options for patients at advanced disease stage.

The findings of the research have been published in life science journal Cell Reports.

Aideen Ryan, Associate Professor in Tumour Immunology at University of Galway, said: “Unfortunately, a high proportion of colorectal cancer patients do not respond to immunotherapy.

“We have identified sugar coated molecules with sialic acid, called sialoglycans, that are present on cells in tumours, known as stromal cells.

“These are associated with poor responses to immunotherapy. Targeting these molecules enhances the immune response in tumours that have high levels of these cells.”

The research was carried out by University of Galway in collaboration with VUB, Belgium; Palleon Pharmaceuticals, Boston, USA; CÚRAM, the SFI Research Centre based at University of Galway; Glasgow Beatson Institute for Cancer Research; Queen’s University Belfast.

Dr Ryan said that the plan now is to test the effects of combining this new targeting approach with clinically approved immunotherapies in the hope that the combination will improve immune responses to cancer.

“We are fortunate to have access to drugs, called sialidases, that target sialoglycans through our collaborators Palleon Pharmaceuticals to test these new combinations in our laboratory.

“These sialidase molecules derived from Palleon’s EAGLE glyco-immunology drug development platform has recent clinical proof of mechanism.”

Li Peng, chief scientific officer, Palleon, said they were are delighted to collaborate with Dr Ryan in studying the role of sialoglycans on tumour-associated stromal cells in inhibiting anti-tumour immune responses.

“Dr Ryan’s ground-breaking research highlights the therapeutic potential of targeting stromal cell sialoglycans in the tumour microenvironment as a cancer treatment approach, utilising a sialidase molecule derived from Palleon’s EAGLE glyco-immunology drug development platform that has clinical proof of mechanism.”

The recent published Book of Uí Mhaine (Royal Irish Academy 2023) investigates the fourteenth century Irish manuscript of the same name, one of the most important manuscripts of late medieval Ireland.

Edited by Dr Elizabeth Boyle (Maynooth University) and Professor Ruairí Ó hUiginn (Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies), Book of Uí Mhaine (2023) examines all aspects of the manuscript, including its production, the medieval texts it contains, its decoration and its later history.

The Book of Uí Mhaine was written over a period of seven years for Muircheartach Ó Ceallaigh, bishop of Clonfert and later archbishop of Tuam (d. 1407), probably in the ancient territory of Uí Mhaine (east Galway, south Roscommon, part of Clare, part of Offaly).

It was the work of many scholars and a miscellaneous collection of much that was considered vital for a bishop to know in fourteenth-century Ireland.

Gathering together work by experts from Irish and UK universities, the book sheds new light on the manuscript and is lavishly illustrated with examples of its beautiful scripts and decorated initials.

One highlight is an edition and translation by Professor Liam Breatnach of a medieval Irish poem never published before which possibly dates to the twelfth or thirteenth century, and which discusses all sorts of occupations held by people in medieval Ireland, from musicians to doctors, silversmiths to comb-makers.

The event takes place in Kennys Bookshop in Liosbán on Tuesday, May 23 at 6pm and all are welcome.

Copies of the book will be available to purchase on the night. This event is free to attend, but ticketed – please visit www.kennys.ie/events or call Kennys on 091-709350 to book your free ticket.

Galway University Hospitals (GUH) celebrated International Day of the Nurse yesterday, recognising the contribution of nursing mentors in supporting new colleagues.

Over 250 overseas nurses and midwives took up roles in GUH since the beginning of last year, where they were supported with an adaptation and preceptorship programme.

The Saolta Preceptor Recognition Awards is an initiative to publicly acknowledge and thank the nurses who made such a huge impact on our new recruits.

Preceptorship is the term given to a structured, supported period of learning where experienced nurses take on the role of mentoring newly appointed nurses and helping them to adapt to their new positions.

Since 2022 over 550 new overseas nurses and midwives joined the Saolta group and benefited from an adaptation and preceptorship programme.

In GUH, nurses Therese Prendergast and Soumya Rajan were recently honoured with a preceptorship award at the hospital.

Therese Prendergast is a staff nurse in ED, she was nominated for the award by her preceptee Juben P. Baldeviso.

Soumya Rajan is a staff nurse in St Pat’s and was nominated by Dona Binoy and Athira Sukumaran.

Juben P said: “I started my adaptation program with a nervous heart yet with an open mind.

“My preceptor Therese Prendergast made me feel so much more. She made me feel welcome and that I belonged to the unit.

“She is very enthusiastic when it comes to work and keeps you involved in the process. I can say she is very skilled with her practice which is backed up by years of experience here and abroad. She has a lot of energy.

“I am humbled to be taught by her, she is compassionate in dealing with patients and I have witnessed it personally every time I am with her. She will always walk the extra mile to deliver the best possible nursing care to her patients.”

Dona Binoy said: “Soumya was incredibly supportive, and I want to thank her for helping me in my new career in GUH.

“She has excellent teaching skills and has been a great support, she really deserves this award.”

Marie Burns, Director of Nursing at GUH added: “Our nurses are our best asset, and I am grateful to work with such wonderful teams in Galway University Hospitals.

“I want to take this opportunity to thank each and every one of our nursing staff for all their dedication and commitment to their roles.”

Therese and Soumya were presented with a voucher, a certificate and their award by Saolta Chief Director of Nursing and Midwifery at recent awards ceremony.
