The most important poker rules

0

Do you want to beat your friends in poker? Looking to perfect your poker strategies and take your skills to the next level? Then it’s essential you understand the rules of poker. The game of poker has been around for centuries, but there are always important updates and small details players need to be aware of if they’re going to succeed at the tables. That’s why we’ve compiled a handy guide on all the necessary rules that every aspiring poker player needs to know!

Know the basic rules of poker and the different types of hands

Poker is a popular card game that has been played for centuries, and it’s no surprise why. With its blend of strategy, skill, and luck, there’s always a new adventure waiting around the corner. However, before you jump in and start playing, it’s important to know the basic rules of the game and the different types of hands.

Poker is played with a standard 52-card deck and the objective is to make the best hand possible. The hands are ranked from highest to lowest, and players must make betting decisions based on their confidence in the strength of their hand. So whether you’re playing Texas Hold’em, Five Card Draw, or another variant, knowing these basic rules will give you a solid foundation to explore the game’s intricacies and enhance your gameplay.

Understand betting limits – when to bet, how much to bet, when to fold, etc.

Betting can be exciting, but it can also be intimidating if you’re new to it. Understanding betting limits is crucial to your success and enjoyment. Knowing when to bet, how much to bet, and when to fold can make all the difference.

Betting too much on a casino game can cause you to lose all of your money too quickly, while not betting enough could cause you to miss out on potential winnings. On the other hand, folding too often can prevent you from taking advantage of good hands that could lead to big wins. It’s essential to find the right balance and understand the intricacies of betting limits to succeed in this thrilling world of gambling.

Learn the etiquette of poker – always show good sportsmanship

Poker is not just a game of luck, it’s also about demonstrating good sportsmanship. Whether you’re playing with friends or in a tournament, it’s crucial to show respect towards others. This means not gloating when you win and not berating others when you lose. You should strive to be gracious in victory and defeat.

It’s essential to remember that the game of poker is about building relationships and having fun. When you prioritize good sportsmanship, you’ll not only improve your poker skills, but you’ll also build better connections with the people you play with. So, the next time you play poker, remember to show your opponents the same level of respect you’d like to receive – it’s the right way to play the game.

Respect other players’ decisions and strategies

One of the keys to being a successful team player in any game is respecting the decisions and strategies chosen by your fellow teammates. It can be tempting to criticize or question the moves made by others, especially if they differ from your own approach. However, this can quickly lead to tension and conflict within the group, causing morale and performance to suffer.

By acknowledging and accepting the choices of others, you demonstrate trust and support for your team. Additionally, you may even learn something new by studying and understanding alternative tactics. Remember, the ultimate goal of any game is to work together towards victory, and a unified team is far more likely to achieve success than one torn apart by dissent.

Understand pot odds and how it can affect the outcome of a hand

Poker is a game of skill, strategy, and, at times, luck. One of the most important skills to master is the concept of pot odds. Pot odds refer to the relationship between the size of the pot and the amount of money you need to put in to continue playing the hand.

By understanding pot odds, you can make better decisions when deciding whether to fold, call, or raise. Knowing how to calculate pot odds will help you determine whether your hand is worth playing and whether the potential payout is worth the risk. Understanding pot odds is essential for any serious poker player, and it can make a significant difference in the outcome of a hand.

Always be aware of your chip stack and protect it accordingly

In the intense world of poker, having a decent chip stack can make all the difference between a big win and a crushing defeat. It’s best to always keep an eye on your chip stack and protect it with every ounce of your ability.

After all, your chip stack is your lifeline in this game – without it, you’re dead in the water. You never know when a sudden bad beat might come your way, so it’s crucial to make sure your chip count is always healthy. Remember to play smart and keep your focus, and you’ll be in good shape to keep your chip stack safe and thriving.

To conclude, when it comes to playing poker, it is important to always be aware of the rules and etiquette. Knowing the different types of hands, being able to recognize betting limits, and understanding pot odds are all essential elements for a successful poker experience. At the same time, however, remaining courteous at all times is just as important; respect each other’s decisions and strategies.

Remember that poker should be enjoyed by all – so treat your opponents fairly and show good sportsmanship. Finally, maintain an awareness on your chip stack; protect it accordingly and use it wisely as you make your way through each hand. With these tips in mind, may side bets come your way!

Energy companies must pass on savings to customers

Galway Daily news Galway sports clubs share in €2.5 million energy costs support

Energy companies must pass on savings to their customers after wholesale electricity prices were dramatically reduced in the last year, a Galway senator has said.

Senator Seán Kyne said the latest CSO figures show wholesale electricity prices decreased by over 40% in the 12 months to April 2023, and by 13.5% when April and March 2023 are compared.

Senator Kyne said that this substantial saving must be passed on to customers, as energy companies were quick to increase prices when their own costs increased.

The Fine Gael senator said that we are not seeing the same urgency in passing on savings to customers as energy prices come down.

“As we move into the warmer months, customers are starting to see smaller bills thanks to less usage, but that shouldn’t be a smokescreen for energy companies to hide behind with continued overcharging.

“The Government has taken several steps to help ease the burden of spiralling electricity prices on hard-pressed households.

“Energy credits of €600 have been made available to every household to help them with their electricity bills and we have reduced VAT on electricity and gas to 9% – their lowest rate ever.”

Senator Kyne said that this week, Cabinet approved the extension of the Temporary Business Energy Support Scheme for small businesses until the end of July.

A windfall tax is also being imposed on the profits of the energy companies.

“We will say to these companies, in a very practical way, that if they are going to continue to profiteer on the back of Irish people, then we are going to tax them for it,” he said.

Galway Daily news Galway family syndicate "laughing, cheering and crying" after €250,000 Lotto win

A Galway clan left Lotto HQ this afternoon with celebrations in mind after picking up a cheque worth a cool €250,000.

The family won the jackpot prize in the Lotto Plus 2 draw on Saturday, May 13.

The syndicate, who wish to keep their win private, purchased the winning quick pick ticket in the Fancy Fare store in Salthill.

The family discovered they’d won the jackpot prize two days after the draw. One of the syndicate members checked the winning numbers while sitting in their car.

“I just thought I’d go on and have a look at the numbers. I started reading them and couldn’t believe what I was seeing. I closed my eyes, then opened them and read the numbers over and over again.”

“My stomach jumped and my whole body started to shake. I rang my other family members straight away to share the news and there was laughing, cheering and crying. Just pure joy and excitement”.

The winning ticket holder revealed how they hid their ticket to keep it safe before travelling up to Lotto HQ to claim their prize.

“I was thinking where on earth am I going to hide this ticket, so I locked it in my filing cabinet until the day we had to travel up to the National Lottery to pick up the cheque.

“I then carefully transferred the ticket from the cabinet into my handbag and it was only when I was walking around Dublin, I realised that my cheap handbag worth €5 was now carrying around a ticket in it worth €250,000!”, they added.

The syndicate are looking forward to sharing the prize with the wider family circle who are sure to appreciate it.

Meanwhile tonight’s EuroMillions Jackpot rolls to an estimated €65 Million. Players dreaming of becoming Irelands first EuroMillions jackpot winner of the year are reminded that the cut-off time for sales for EuroMillions tickets is at 7.30pm this evening.

After two difficult years coping with the pandemic, The Men’s Shed movement in Ireland has bounced back and is making a great impact once again on the lives of thousands.

A sanctuary for men of all ages, providing company, friendship and support, Men’s Sheds offer a welcome social outlet for members throughout Ireland.

In a new series made by Macha Media for TG4, with support from Northern Ireland Screen’s Irish Language Broadcast Fund, Men’s Sheds covers a year in the life of ten sheds right across the country, as they open their doors and introduce us to their members.

The series will air over four weeks, starting on Thursday 25 May at 8pm on TG4 and on the TG4 Player.

Featuring sheds in Galway, Donegal, Armagh, Kerry, Dundalk and Dublin, the programme highlights the characters who belong to the sheds and the wide range of activities they do, from woodworking in Dundalk, online learning in Gaoth Dobhair, working out in Cahersiveen, beekeeping in Falcarragh, and vegetable growing in Corr na Móna, amongst many others.

The series is an emotional rollercoaster which follows the personal stories of men across all four provinces, in rural and in urban centres alike.

With heart-warming stories of post-Covid reopening, caring for the environment and supporting local communities, as well as poignant personal accounts of issues around mental health, family life, cancer, loneliness and loss, this observational documentary series sheds light on the significant positive role played by the Men’s Sheds for male health and well-being, especially in a society emerging from the Covid lockdowns.

Amongst the sheds to feature in the series, Macha Media paid a number of visits to Cumann na bhFear in An Cheathrú Rua.

Audiences will meet the members at their workshop at a model boatbuilding class and in their polytunnel, as they plant seeds for the new season, as well as a fantastic wildlife project where they build and erect a barn owl nesting box at the idyllic setting of Clifden Castle.

In one of the more candid moments of the series, Máirtín Breathnach, chairperson of the Men’s Shed in An Cheathrú Rua, reveals his recent prostate cancer diagnosis and talks about how the shed has given him a huge sense of support and relief from his worries.

“It’s a massive blow when you find out that you have cancer. The shed has kept me going.

“It keeps your mind occupied and you can set any worries aside. We talk to each other here and we share our problems and that allows us to support each other.”

The series also features a second Galway shed on the northern shore of Lough Corrib in the Gaeltacht area of Dúiche Sheoigheach.

Macha Media accompany the members of the Corr na Móna Men’s shed based at the parochial house in the village, as they build and develop a community garden and polytunnel behind the chapel, restore an old grandfather clock and fix up a number of bicycles, including a high nelly with local significance.

The Corr na Móna visits culminate with footage from the annual Corr na Móna 50 mile cycle, with some breath-taking aerial shots from Maam Valley, Leenane and Inagh Valley, with members of the shed taking part and playing central roles in the organisation of the event.

Speaking about the community garden and polytunnel project, shed chairperson, Seán Breathnach said: “We wanted to grow our own vegetables in the polytunnel and from the outset, we decided to leave a corner of the polytunnel for the children from the National School next door.

“It’s great to build that community link between the young and old and hopefully, the children will benefit from the polytunnel and learn something new too.”

The series also introduces us to shed member, Derek Simon, who restores a 1740 grandfather clock that he got from his father-in-law, a project which Derek is delighted to complete in the Men’s Shed.

“I’m delighted with how well the clock has turned out in its new case and I’ll be very happy to present it to my children, especially my second son, as he was very fond of his grandfather.”

We also meet with Paul Coyne and Marcus Choy who fix up old bicycles and as Paul tells us, the Corr na Móna shed has a great mix of characters.

“It’s great to be here to work alongside Marcus, he’s an expert on building bicycles. The best thing about this shed is the mix of skills that everyone has and is happy to share.”

The series provides a refreshing insight into men’s mental health issues, and it will evoke and inspire, as we follow the personal journeys and projects carried out by the many characters of Ireland’s men’s sheds, who work and socialise ‘shoulder to shoulder’.

Men’s Sheds will air over four weeks, starting on Thursday 25 May at 8pm on TG4 and on the TG4 Player.

Galway study describes how stem cells function in sea creature

0
galway daily news jellyfish stem cell study university of galway

A new study by a research team at University of Galway has described the developmental potential of adult stem cells in a creature which is a close relative of jellyfish.

The creature, cnidarian Hydractinia, is part of a group of animals that includes corals and jellyfish, and unlike most of its allies, Hydractinia can be easily grown in the laboratory.

The study was carried out by in Centre for Chromosome Biology and was published as a cover article in the international journal Current Biology.

The team led by Professor Uri Frank and PhD student Áine Varley established this animal as a model organism for stem cell research.

This included the development of genetic tools that allow the generation of transgenic animals.

A major question in stem cell biology is the ability of these cells to generate other cell types, such as neurons and muscle, throughout life.

In the study, the team addressed the problem by transplanting a single stem cell from a donor animal to a recipient. The single transplanted stem cell was genetically labelled by fluorescent dyes, making it visible in the tissue of the recipient.

The research team found that, following several months, progeny of the single transplanted stem cell gradually displaced the recipient’s own cells. Eventually, a complete takeover occurred, thereby the recipient animal became genetically identical to the donor.

University of Galway PhD student Áine Varley who led the study said that cnidarians are known for their exceptional regenerative ability.

“Many of these animals can regenerate whole bodies from small tissue fragments. Another unusual feature of cnidarians is the apparent lack of ageing; indeed, some cnidarians, such as corals, are known to live for thousands of years without experiencing any decline in their health,” she said.

“These fantastic traits, which are uncommon in animals, are thought to depend on a population of adult stem cells that behave like embryonic cells in that they can renew all tissues, continuously.”

Professor Uri Frank said: “Hydractinia adult stem cells are functionally similar to human embryonic cells.

“The technology developed in this project allows us easy access to embryonic-like cells in an adult animal. The study has implications on our understanding of how stem cells function to contribute to tissue regeneration.”

The HSE is starting its Spring COVID-19 booster vaccine programme for people for older and vulnerable people.

Following the most recent NIAC (National Immunisation Advisory Committee) advice, this vaccination campaign is getting underway, targeting people aged 70 years and older, residents of long-term care facilities for older adults and people aged 5 years and older with a weak immune system.

If you are eligible, you can get a COVID-19 booster from a participating GP or pharmacy or at a Community Vaccination Centres (CVCs).

Those eligible must wait at least 3 months since their previous COVID-19 vaccine or since they have had a COVID-19 infection before getting the booster.

In line with NIAC guidance, the HSE aims to complete this COVID-19 booster programme by the end of May.

This will allow for the period of time required for those getting their Spring COVID-19 booster to get their next booster dose in autumn, along with their flu vaccine.

Eileen Whelan, National Lead, COVID-19 Vaccination Programme, HSE said, “We are putting the most recent advice from NIAC into action and inviting everyone eligible to get the Spring booster vaccine.”

“We know people’s immunity weakens over time, especially in older people. This is why NIAC are recommending a booster for people aged 70 years and older and those in long-term care facilities for older adults.”

“The booster will help keep them protected from serious illness and boost their immunity against infection from COVID-19.”

Anyone aged 5 and older with a weak immune system (immunocompromised) will also be offered a COVID-19 booster.

This group is at higher risk of severe disease from COVID-19 and includes cancer patients, transplant patients, people living with chronic kidney disease and those on dialysis. The booster will help keep them protected against COVID-19 too.
