Planning refused again for 10-storey Galway City hotel

Galway Daily news Planning refused again for 10-storey Galway City hotel

An Bord Pleanála has blocked plans for the construction of a 10-storey hotel down by the docks in Galway City.

Summix BNM appealed to the higher planning authority after the city council rejected plans for the 174 bedroom hotel in June of 2021.

The plans were for the demolition of unused Coal Yard industrial site at the corner of Lough Atalia road and Bothar na Long, next to Forthill Cemetery.

In its place they planned to build a part three-storey, part ten-storey hotel on the narrow lot, with no plans for any parking associated with the hotel.

The three storey element of the hotel would have been the western pavilion, incorporating a bar/restaurant over the three floors.

The original plans were for an 11 storey main hotel building, with a three storey element at the western end, containing a total of 186 guest bedrooms, but one floor was removed from the plans after consultation with the council.

The appeal by Summix BNM emphasised the importance of the location with Galway City Centre, and the need for compact urban growth in relation to its scale.

It also stated that the proposal is of a similar height to the nearby Bonham Quay development, and so the location should be considered appropriate for taller buildings.

The appeal also stated that Forthill cemetery has significant value as a cultural feature, but should not inhibit development of the area.

An Bord Pleanála rejected the appeal for reasons similar to why the city council refused planning originally.

The board said that by reason of its height, massing, and proximity to Forthill cemetery, it would have a detrimental impact on the character of this heritage asset.

The proposal would therefore contravene objectives in the City Development Plan stating that new developments should not be detrimental to the character of a protected structure of archaeological site.

Ballinasloe man’s face was “grey with shock” after €500k EuroMillions win

Galway Daily news €500,000 win for Euromillions player in the west

A Ballinasloe man picked up a cheque worth €500,000 in Lottery HQ this afternoon after scooping the EuroMillions Plus top prize in last Friday’s draw.

The lucky lottery player who purchased the winning ticket at the EuroSpar store at St. Michael’s Square in Townparks on Friday 30 June, revealed that he’s been playing the same numbers for the last 12 months.

“I’ve been playing the same numbers for the past year. I’ve carefully selected them. I couldn’t believe it when I checked online and saw them all there.

“I wobbled out to the kitchen to tell my wife the news. I don’t think she believed me at first.”

His wife said that his face was ‘grey with shock’ when he came into the room and then he whispered that he thought he had just won half a million euro.

The lucky player said that the past week has been surreal reading the papers and listening to the radio and hearing presenters talk about the big winners from Ballinasloe.

Today’s claim comes off the back of a recent spate of wins in Galway. Over the past two weeks three Galwegians have scooped the EuroMillions Plus top prize of €500,000.

The previous Friday night draw (23 June), another Ballinasloe player scooped their €500,000 win after purchasing their ticket at the Corrib Oil in Brackernagh and this Tuesday (4 July), a player Ballybrit became half a million euro richer after purchasing their winning ticket in McGreal’s Mace in Ballybrit Court, Ballybrit.

Meanwhile, there was no winner of last Tuesday’s EuroMillions jackpot of €49,799,831, which means tomorrow’s jackpot rolls to an estimated €65 Million euro.

Govt fails to address farmers’ concerns on Nature Restoration Law says Kerrane

0
Galway Daily news Farmers getting €13.4 million basic payment scheme refunds

Roscommon-Galway TD Claire Kerrane has called on the Government to support a Sinn Féin amendment to ensure that farmers’ concerns are addressed as part of the Nature Restoration Law.

Concerns have been raised by farmers about the potential impact of the Nature Restoration Law, which was the focus of a Motion in the Dáil yesterday.

Speaking on the Motion, Deputy Kerrane challenged the Government’s amendment, which called for ‘the development of a Nature Restoration Regulation, which both protects nature and ensures the future vitality and viability of Irish farming and rural communities’.

Deputy Kerrane said that the amendment provided no proposals on how to achieve this.

“We know that many in the farming community are concerned about what is being proposed regarding the Nature Restoration Law,” said the Sinn Féin TD.

She said the Motion presented the opportunity to discuss what will be the single greatest change to land use in Ireland.

“The issue however, remains, what will this law actually look like and that is where the Government view is absent, as reflected in their amendment to this morning’s Motion.

“The Government’s amendment speaks of supporting the development of a Nature Restoration Regulation that protects nature and the viability of farming and rural communities, yet conveniently side-steps how they intend to achieve that and fails to present any proposals on how they will support the farming community.”

Deputy Kerrane said that the Government and their European colleagues have not been proactive on developing the Nature Restoration Law and seem to be oblivious to the need to make sure our family farms and rural communities are at the heart of this issue as part of the process.

“The initial text on this law, which will be voted on next week, was never going to be acceptable. It ignored land ownership in seeking mandatory re-wetting and it tried to insist on Farmers doing more without putting actual adequate funding in place – this was simply unworkable.”

Cracking the Code: How to Identify Slot Machines with High Payouts

0

When it comes to playing slot machines, one of the key factors that captures the interest of players is the potential for high payouts. While slot machines operate on random number generators, certain characteristics can indicate a higher likelihood of winning big. In this article, we will delve into the world of slot machines and explore how to identify the ones with high payout rates. By understanding the factors that influence payouts and employing effective strategies, you can increase your chances of hitting substantial jackpots and maximize your slot machine gaming experience.

Choosing Winning Slot Machines: Finding High-Paying Options

Slot machines are incredibly popular in the gambling industry, and they generate substantial revenue. The appeal of slots lies in the possibility of winning significant amounts of money with minimal skill required. While it’s important to remember that slots are entirely based on chance, some players believe there are strategies to give themselves a slight advantage over the casino. In this article, we will explore these strategies and provide insights on how to approach slot machines for potentially better outcomes.

Payback Percentage:

The payback percentage of a slot machine is a crucial indicator of its potential payout. It refers to the amount of money that the machine is programmed to return to players over the long run. Slot machines with high payback percentages offer better odds of winning. Look for machines with a payback percentage of 96% or higher, as these tend to provide more frequent and substantial payouts.

Volatility:

Volatility, also known as variance or risk level, is another factor that influences the payout potential of a slot machine. High volatility machines have the potential for larger payouts but with less frequency. These machines are ideal for players who enjoy the excitement of chasing big wins and are willing to withstand longer periods without winning. Conversely, low volatility machines offer smaller, more frequent payouts, making them suitable for players who prefer steady but smaller wins.

Jackpot Size:

The size of the jackpot is an obvious indicator of the potential payout a slot machine offers. Progressive jackpot slot machines, which accumulate a portion of each wager into a massive jackpot prize, often provide life-changing payouts. However, it is important to note that progressive jackpots typically have higher volatility and may require larger bets to be eligible for the jackpot. Non-progressive machines may have smaller jackpots but can still offer substantial payouts.

Bonus Features and Free Spins:

Slot machines with high-payout potential often come equipped with enticing bonus features and free spin rounds. These additional features can significantly enhance your chances of winning big. Look for machines that offer multipliers, expanding wilds, or bonus games within the slot game. Free spin rounds with enhanced features, such as stacked symbols or increasing multipliers, can also boost your potential payouts.

Research and Player Feedback:

Conducting thorough research and seeking player feedback can provide valuable insights into slot machines with high payout rates. Online forums, review websites, and social media platforms can offer a wealth of information from experienced players. Pay attention to reputable sources and read about the experiences of others who have played specific machines. Look for positive feedback regarding consistent payouts, big wins, and overall satisfaction with the machine’s payout potential.

Practice and Bankroll Management:

While identifying slot machines with high payouts is important, it is equally crucial to practice responsible bankroll management. Set a budget for your slot machine gaming and stick to it. Avoid chasing losses and know when to walk away. By managing your bankroll effectively, you can prolong your gameplay, increase your chances of hitting a high payout, and enjoy the excitement of playing slot machines responsibly.

Conclusion:

Cracking the code to identify slot machines with high payouts requires a combination of understanding key factors such as payback percentage, volatility, jackpot size, and bonus features, as well as conducting thorough research and seeking player feedback. By considering these factors and employing effective bankroll management, you can enhance your chances of finding slot machines that offer substantial payouts. At PSU Collegian, you can explore a list of online casinos that offer high payouts.

Remember, while higher payouts are enticing, playing slots should primarily be about enjoyment, so approach the game with a balanced mindset and have fun on your quest for big wins.

THIRD EuroMillions Plus win for Galway in under two weeks!

0
Galway Daily news €500,000 win for Euromillions player in the west

For the third time in less than two weeks, EuroMillions players in Galway are being urged to check their tickets carefully after another player in the West of the country scooped the top prize of €500,000 in last night’s EuroMillions Plus draw.

The winning Quick Pick ticket for last night’s draw was purchased yesterday (Tuesday) at McGreal’s Mace in Ballybrit Court, Ballybrit.

Last Friday, a Ballinasloe player enjoyed a similar win after purchasing their winning ticket at the EuroSpar store at St. Michael’s Square in Townparks.

In the previous Friday night draw, another Ballinasloe player scooped their €500,000 win after purchasing their ticket at the Corrib Oil in Brackernagh.

EuroSpar Shop Manager Beatrice McGreal was over the moon to hear that one of her customers had won the top prize amount and was having a double celebration as her family also owns the store that sold last Friday’s winning ticket.

“After last Friday’s win for EuroSpar in Ballinasloe, I said to my son that good things happen in threes. I never thought the next big win would happen quite so soon after though!” said Beatrice.

“Last night marked the biggest prize that we have ever had at Mace in Ballybrit so there is great excitement here today. I always hoped to get a call with good news from the National Lottery after a big draw so you can imagine our delight.

“We are absolutely thrilled that two of our customers have lots to celebrate in the space of a week. I am sure we’ll see lots of players eager to check their tickets today. The main thing is that we wish the winner health, happiness and that they enjoy this huge win.”

The winning numbers in last night’s  (Tuesday 4th July) EuroMillions Plus draw were: 01, 07, 13, 14, 46.

The National Lottery are appealing to EuroMillions players in the Ballybrit area to carefully check their tickets today as a Galway player now has a ticket worth €500,000.

The winner is advised to sign the back of their ticket and make contact with the prize claims team on 1800 666 222 or email claims@lottery.ie and arrangements will be made for them to claim their prize.

The two top prize winners from the 23 June and 30 June draws have made contact with the National Lottery and arrangements are now being made for the two Friday night winners to collect their €500,000 cheques.

Meanwhile, as there was no winner of the €49,799,831 jackpot on offer last night, Friday’s jackpot is now set to roll towards an estimated €65 million.

5 reasons why a staycation in the UK is a good idea

0
galway weather forecast High temperature weather warning for Galway this weekend as 29C forecast

If you’ve ever taken a staycation within the UK, you’ll know that there’s so much on our doorstep waiting to explore.

With more UK residents purchasing a static caravan within UK holiday parks, so they can have far more staycations throughout the year with less hassle, we wanted to take a look at some other reasons why a staycation in the UK is always a good idea…

Boosts the local economy

Not only are staycations good for your wallet, but they also boost the money generated in the local economy too. When holidaymakers visit towns and villages near their accommodation, they’re helping small and local businesses, either when they grab a bite to eat or pick up a souvenir for a friend.

Helping local and small businesses and communities while taking a break from the mundane 9 to 5 is one of the best reasons to book a staycation.

No exchange rate worries

With staycations, there’s no need to search for the best money exchange rate for your spending money, as you’ll be using the same currency you use in your day-to-day life, whilst on staycation.

Plus, if that wasn’t all, you can use your cards without the exchange rate interest being charged to your card too!

Kinder to the planet

As fun as many find hopping on a plane and flying off to another country, the damage the flights have on our planet is staggering.

By opting for a staycation, it’s not only beneficial to your pocket, but the planet too.

We know you’ll still be admitting carbon into the atmosphere by driving to your staycation accommodation, but one singular flight equals 14% of a car’s annual emissions.

To find out more about your carbon footprint and what form of transport is best for your next holiday, click here.

Furry friends

When it comes to staycations, one of the best perks is having the option to bring your furry friend along with you!

Of course, some holiday locations do not allow animals, apart from service animals, into their accommodations, but many places around the UK welcome furry friends with open arms!

Not only do you get to spend quality time with your pooch whilst exploring what the UK has to offer, you also save money on having to place your pooch in a doggy hotel whilst you’re away!

Saves you money

The last great thing we believe is a perk for choosing a staycation over an abroad holiday, is the amount of money you save. These days, many holiday parks are competing alongside one another to offer holidaymakers the best holiday possible, for the best price.

Plus, when booking a staycation, you only need to pay for your accommodation – there are no flights to book or anything like that, simply get in your car and drive to your destination. Alternatively, you could save yourself a trip behind the wheel and opt for a more environmentally friendly option and train it to your destination too.

Another way you save money when opting for a staycation is there’s no worry about having to pay extra tariff rates when calling or texting your friends and family whilst away. As you’ll be within the UK, you won’t require an abroad package etc, on top of your monthly phone bill.

A new exhibition at University of Galway will focus on mental health and the nature of expressing mental health issues from an artistic perspective.

Mindscapes, taking place from July 12 to August 2, is a unique exhibition resulting from collaborations between Arts and Sciences. Each piece is grounded in contemporary academic research.

With mental health as its central theme, Mindscapes features artworks from 10 artists in collaboration with 14 academic researchers from the Universities of Galway, Oxford, Edinburgh, Birmingham, and London.

Each artist chose a mental health topic and then was paired up with an academic who conducts research in that specific area. Topics include wellbeing, bipolar disorder, sleep, illusions, and emotions.

Mindscapes is the first project from the Scientific Arts Lab at the University of Galway and directed by Dr Jane Conway, Research Lecturer with the School of Psychology at University of Galway.

Dr Conway said that the exhibition is testament to the strength of Galway’s cultural community.

“It demonstrates that people from the arts and sciences can come together to create original pieces that express the nature of the mind,” said Dr Conway.

“In keeping with the aims of the Scientific Arts Lab, it explores ideas through artistic media but with respect to the research that iteratively builds those very ideas, and values the necessary critical reflection on the evidence, thinking about ‘how we know what we know’.”

The free exhibition will run from 10am to 6pm from July 12 to August 2 in the University’s Art Gallery in the Quadrangle.

The exhibition will be officially opened on Saturday July 15 at 3pm by James Harrold, former Galway City and County Arts Officer.

Best Casinos to Play Around Galway (IE)

Galway is one of Ireland’s most iconic cities and Ed Sheeran even released a song about it: Galway Girl. However, apart from being a bustling picturesque tourist hub, the city is also home to a handful of top-notch casino entertainment venues.

Whether you want to win life-changing amounts of money, take your partner or date for a night out, or have a ball with the wolfpack, there are reasons enough to visit one of Galway’s casino entertainment venues to have an unforgettable evening.

In this Best Casinos to Play Around Galway guide, we will discuss the pros, cons, and key takeaways from the 5 best casinos around Galway so that you can make a more informed decision on which casino to spend an evening out and play at.

Eglinton Casino & Card Club

Located right in the Eglinton Court in the middle of Galway city on Eglinton Street and founded in 2007, the Eglinton Casino & Card Club is one the most well-known poker clubs in the country. The club offers players access to all sorts of Poker (Texas Hold’em, Omaha, and Stud) and other casino card games like Blackjack.

Apart from being a second home for seasoned card players, the Eglinton Casino & Card Club also features a wide variety of slot machines, video poker machines, and roulette games. Additionally, the venue hosts events like the Irish Poker Tour and the Galway Poker Festival.

To join the card club, one must pay a yearly membership fee. This gives the player access to all the perks the club has to offer, such as complimentary snacks, tea, coffee, and alcoholic beverages.

The Eglinton Casino & Card Club is open 24/7 and there is always at least one cash game or house game one can attend if enough seating is available.

Caesars Palace Casino

The Caesars Palace Casino in Galway is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. It features games from Apex, EGT, Amatic Industries, R. Franco Digital, Novomatic, Ainsworth, and eGaming, ATM machines, smoking areas, and free Wi-Fi.

One of the most unique takeaways of Caesars Palace Casino in Galway is that it has a VIP program in place for its most loyal members, called Vantage Club Rewards.

Vantage Club membership benefits include free bets in Caesars Palace Casino venues and online, the opportunity to unlock fantastic rewards, free access to prize draws, and free participation in VIP jackpots.

Caesars Palace Casino is accessible online via Slotbox so that players never have to leave their houses to play their favorite slots and other casino games. Nothing beats playing games of chance from the comfort of your own home and during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Caesars Palace Casino franchise decided to launch an online variant of their offline venues.

The land-based Caesars Palace Casino is located at 202 Upper Salthill Rd, Salthill, Co. Galway, and has a smart casual dress code in place.

4 Aces Casino

Based at 19 Dominick Street Upper Galway and open 7 days a week from 12 pm, the 4 Aces Casino offers its players countless slot machines, Blackjack, Roulette, and Poker games. The interior is spacious and elegant, has comfortable chairs, sofas, and lounges, and has a vibrant atmosphere.

From time to time, the 4 Aces Casino hosts poker tournaments where players can win significant prizes. Apart from just being a casino, 4 Aces is also a socializing hub. Visitors are free to dine in the in-house restaurant without gambling at all.

To enter 4 Aces Casino, one must be at least 18 years old, carry a valid photographic ID like a driver’s license or passport, and something that shows one’s current address. A recent utility bill or bank statement not older than three months will tick this box.

New patrons only have to bring their ID and proof of address documentation once. After they have filled in their mandatory membership registration form, they are considered a member and don’t have to bring additional documentation during subsequent visits.

As the name of the casino might suggest, its key focus is Poker, No Limit Texas Hold’em Poker, to be more precise. Every evening, cash leagues are played, and Mondays feature a guaranteed €1,000 prize pool.

A, perhaps overlooked addition to the 4 Aces Casino, is the in-house Grand Sports Bar. After all, a casino is as much about entertainment as it is about gambling. In the Sports Bar, patrons have the chance to eat, drink, socialize, make friends, and have a laugh.

As the menu changes regularly, we recommend checking the casino’s official website ahead of time to avoid unnecessary disappointments during your visit.

One of the most significant downsides of the 4 Aces Casino compared to the other casinos and gambling venues mentioned in this guide, is the fact that it has no active player rewards, loyalty, or VIP program.

Although the casino doesn’t have a reward program in place for loyal players, getting to the 4 Aces Club couldn’t be easier. It is basically located at the spot where the River Corrib starts to turn into the canal. It is close to the Galway Cathedral and on the opposite side of the river, one will see Jurys Inn and Róisín Dubh. Public transport is situated nearby, across the river, at the Domnick Street bus station.

Alternatively, one could choose to travel via Henry Street Station about a minute away from the club or the Galway Train Station, which is good for at least a fifteen-minute walk from the venue.

Seapoint Leisure

Located right at the Galway city promenade, Seapoint Leisure has been providing casino entertainment as a family business since 1949. It features a casino, kids entertainment area, and 940-seat bingo hall.

Seapoint Leisure is known for its excellent customer service and eye for detail. Additionally, players get lucky from time to time and win gigantic bingo and casino jackpots at the venue. Another key feature of Seapoint Leisure Casino is the fact that it has a free to apply for loyalty card available.

This loyalty card provides the bearer with benefits, such as safe contactless money transfer between slot machines, club points, access to member-only events, and complimentary food and beverages.

The staff at Seapoint Leisure Casino in Galway promotes responsible gambling. Additionally, it takes the privacy of its patrons in high regards and ensures that GDPR standards are met at all times.

Seapoint Leisure’s casino is modernly designed and is decked out with all the latest equipment. Players receive complimentary refreshments while they play and the air is completely changed out every ten minutes. Added to this, the casino conducts regular sanitising and features contactless cash out slot machines.

Seapoint Leisure’s bingo hall can seat well over 900 players and is the home of a daily bingo game that starts at 8pm sharp, with a 30 minute break. Door’s open at 6:50, and as the venue encourages early arrivals, those that buy tickets before 7:10 are allowed to participate in a free €110 90-ball bingo game.

The guaranteed prize pool of each bingo game is a staggering €3,100 per evening. Additionally, all players can participate in a €5,000 daily jackpot game. The amount of balls played in this jackpot game increases by 1 per month and has a minimum payout of €500 daily.

Added to this, there is the Flyer Game, which is won in 47 numbers or balls drawn. The prize pool for this bingo game starts at €1,000 and increases by €100 daily and €500 weekly if not won.

Kids and toddlers can have fun for hours in Seapoint Leisure’s Amusement Center, which features the latest drivers, shoot them ups, and other arcade games. Additionally, kids can play pool in the adjectant pool area, pinball machines, or try their luck at a myriad of teddy cranes.

In total, the Seapoint Leisure Amusement Center features over 100 games that reward players with tickets. These tickets can then be redeemed for prizes in the casino’s prize shop.

Claude’s Casino

Located at the Upper Salthill Road, Claude’s Casino offers players a wide range of slot machines, card, and table games. Seven days a week, from 9am to 1am, patrons are free to walk in and play a game of Roulette, Blackjack, Baccarat, or slots.

Claude’s Casino features a lively sports bar, where visitors can enjoy a drink or snack. However, it is not only this bar or the casino’s slot machines that draws both tourists and locals to the casino daily.

Apart from a wide range of slot machines and other games of chance, the venue provides a range of non-gambling related entertainment activities, such as simulated rally racing, shoot me ups, and other arcade games.

The Claude’s Casino staff is friendly, professional, and attentive. If you ever have a question or run into a problem whilst playing at the venue, you can simply address your situation and expect to be assisted in the most seamless way possible.

Online Gambling In Ireland

Apart from land-based casino venues, one can also visit one of the many Irish online casinos, bingo sites, book makers, and poker rooms. These gambling sites use the latest technologies and feature the newest game releases, which they cater to the masses.

Mobile gambling is the new standard as most online casinos are fully responsive, meaning that the text and buttons on the sites automatically adjust to the screen size of the mobile device of the user.

Added to this, most modern online casinos continue to develop their sites and apps by constantly adding games, adding payment methods like Bitcoin, Litecoin, and other cryptocurrencies, integrating VR, etc.

We recommend only playing at licensed and regulated online casinos so that you know beforehand that they will pay you out as they should and that their games on offer aren’t rigged in favor of the house.

You can compare the available games, bonuses, promotions, available payment methods, and more between different casinos using casino review, affiliate, and informative websites.

Some of the key advantages of online gambling versus offline gambling include:

  • Open 24/7 – You don’t need to travel to the casino and are able to play from the comfort of your own home.
  • Casino Bonuses – Online casinos shower both new and existing players with better bonuses and promotions compared to land-based casinos.
  • Budget-friendly – Slots and other casino games featured in online casinos often have lower minimum betting levels than land-based games of chance.
  • Wide Variety of Games – Online casinos tend to have a wider variety of casino games on offer compared to land-based casino venues.

Examples of drawbacks of online gambling include:

  • Cashout Times – Cashing out your winnings at online casinos usually takes between 1 and 5 business days, which is significantly longer than the instant payments land-based casinos pay out within.
  • Bonus Terms – Most online casinos offer casino bonuses to attract and retain their players. However, almost every online casino bonus comes with strict terms one must adhere to to be able to cash out the received bonus funds.
  • No Personal Interaction – Playing at an online casino doesn’t come with the level of personal interaction one would enjoy when playing in a land-based casino.

The Best Casinos to Play Around Galway (IE) – Conclusion

Now that you know what the best casinos are to play around Galway, Ireland, the only thing that there is left to do is travel to one of the venues, hit the tables, and try your luck! We highly recommend setting a clear budget for yourself, partner, or group of friends, and sticking to it, drinking modestly, and following general casino etiquette to get the most out of your evening out at the casino.

Announcing this new phase of the project, Minister Humphreys said: “The development of the pier at Inis Oírr is an extremely important project and one that I know the community is anxious to see completed.

“I’m therefore pleased today to announce that I have given approval for the next phase of this project.

“Galway County Council will now identify a contractor to undertake these works, which will be aimed at addressing the safety concerns that exist.”

She said that she anticipates that she will be in a position to approve the awarding of this contract before the end of the year.

“This will enable the contractor to begin the construction of this important project in 2024.”

Why Galway’s pubs continue to pull in locals and holidaymakers

0

Galway locals will have noticed that a number of pubs have sadly closed down in recent times. Thankfully, despite this rather depressing trend, Galway’s remaining public houses are managing to make a comeback and continually pull in locals and holidaymakers. As summer approaches, pubs will be hoping for further business from visitors to the city, too.

The harbour city on Ireland’s west coast has always had a strong selection of pubs for people to frequent. Some establishments offer excellent food, while others specialise in serving up local drinks of the finest quality. Pubs are a great way to meet people, too, with an evening visit to the pub a go-to option for many during a typical week. After all, it’s important to keep these socially active venues in business.

In a modern world where technology has taken over, there are plenty of people who would rather sit indoors and watch the big match or stay firmly lodged on the sofa as they consume Netflix. Essentially, some people would prefer to play some Super Mario Party or live vicariously through A Night Out slot game, a title that features a barman and offers a lively party theme, than venture outdoors for an actual night out. Thankfully, not everyone is doing that. For many of Galway’s pubs, the evenings are when they experience most of their business, with an extensive selection of pubs standing out. Whatever the time, a pub is worth visiting, though.

With Galway’s pubs making a comeback, let’s take a look at some of the most popular public houses in the city centre.

The Kings Head

Located in the Latin Quarter of the city, The Kings Head has a rich history that is evident as soon as you enter the building. A warm and welcoming environment, it’s particularly popular with people who want a post-meal pint, as the pub is situated by some of Galway’s top restaurants and eateries. Another great thing about The Kings Head is undoubtedly its live music, with the pub’s delicious food being served up as you boogie to some excellent local artists. If you want an authentic pub experience in Galway, then The Kings Head is a strong option.

Crane Bar

One of the many reasons people head out to the pub in Ireland is to listen to traditional music in a perfect environment. Well, Crane Bar provides exactly that, with its traditional Irish music offering being famous around the city. All you need is a solid local drink and to find a comfortable seat in one of the many seating areas, and you’re good to go.

O’Connell’s Bar

Offering relaxing vibes and a friendly all-round feel, O’Connell’s Bar is a hidden gem in the city. One of the quieter pubs on the list, it’s a great place to meet with your nearest and dearest for a good old chinwag. Additionally, it’s a favoured choice for people who crave German drinks, with O’Connell’s Bar featuring a German beer corner on occasions. Overall, though, this pub’s charm is the main part of its appeal, while the large beer garden is a lovely place to sit in the summer.

Dean Kenny has vowed to defend the rights of students at University of Galway after taking up the role of Students’ Union President.

The Maths and Education Graduate from Belcarra, Co. Mayo was elected by his peers earlier this year and has now taken the reins in the Students’ Union.

Dean follows in the footsteps of President Michael D Higgins who was the University of Galway Students’ Union President back in 1964.

He will be working closely with the other SU Officers including the Vice President/Welfare and Equality Officer Izzy Tiernan, the Vice President/Education Officer Raimey O’Boyle and the Vice President for the Irish Language Faye Ní Dhomhnaill.

Students’ Union President Dean Kenny said that he was delighted to take up the prestigious role representing the students of University of Galway.

“It will be another challenging year as the cost of living and accommodation issues continue to have an impact on students but myself and the other SU Officers will be working hard this year for our members,” he said.

“University of Galway students will need extra support in these testing circumstances to ensure that they have the best possible university experience. We are here for our students and are ready to defend their rights.”

Call to save Mervue bus stop for sake of older residents

Galway Daily news Call to save Mervue bus stop for sake of older residents

Galway TDs have argued for the retention of the bus stop in Mervue, arguing that it is an essential service for older people living in the area.

Speaking in the Daíl, Galway West TD Mairéad Farrell said that a proposal to get rid of the bus is of great concern to the local residents.

The stop could be removed as part of the BusConnects project, which aims to completely redesign public transport in the city.

“It is part of this concept that buses should go through quickly but this bus stop is being used by the elderly community in Mervue, day in, day out, and if people go to Mervue, they will always see it being used.”

“That is an element of concern for me simply because we want more people to use the service. This is something that is already being used so let us not take it away,” Mairéad Farrell said.

Deputy Eamon Ó Cuív spoke in support of the plea, stating that “the demographic has to be taken into account” when considering removing bus stops.

He added that an older demographic cannot be treated the same way as a younger generation when taking bus stops away.

The Fianna Fáil TD also raised concerns about planning permission being refused for housing developments because of a lack of bus services for the area.

Minister of State Jack Chambers said that he would reflect on their feedback on the Mervue bus stop, and take it to the NTA.

“The intention of a network redesign is not to take away transport connectivity from people who have it at present. We will reflect what has been said to the National Transport Authority.”
