Works to improve the water network in Loughrea town are ‘progressing’, Uisce Éireann has said, as the Boil Water Notice affecting customers there remains in place.
The project, which is being carried out with Galway County Council, involves the replacement of 1.8km of cast iron water mains with new pipework.
The notice was issued after low chlorine residuals and elevated levels of iron and turbidity were found in the public water supply.
Uisce Éireann’s Justin Dornan explained that as sections of the cast iron network are replaced, they will be able to lift the Boil Water Notice in sections.
“Crews have completed works to replace cast iron water mains in Castle Street, Kelly Street, Piggott Street, Church Street, Moore Street and along King Street, which is a critical step in safeguarding the water supply to homes and businesses in Loughrea ensuring a safer, more sustainable water supply,” said Justin Dornan.
“In addition, services have been transferred from old cast iron main to the existing PVC main on Cross Street, Loughrea.”
He said that Uisce Éireann has begun a sampling and testing programme on the network where works have recently been completed.
“Once we have received compliant results for the samples collected, we will then be able to consult with the HSE in order to lift the notice in sections,” he said.
“We acknowledge the inconvenience that customers on this supply are experiencing and would like to reassure them that we are working as quickly and as efficiently as possible to complete this vital programme of works for the town and provide them with a safe and secure water supply for generations to come.”
