Galway Daily news Vigils on 9th anniversary of the death of Savita Halappanavar today

Vigils will be taking place in front of Dáil Éireann and online to mark the 9th anniversary of the death of Savita Halappanavar today.

Savita died at University Hospital Galway at University Hospital Galway on October 28, 2012 due to a septic miscarriage after she had repeatedly requested an abortion.

Her death was widely decried, in Ireland and around the world, as unnecessary and a consequence of Ireland’s restrictive abortion laws.

Her story was an important part of the Repeal the 8th campaign in 2018, with campaigners pointing to it as something that should never be allowed to happen again..

The Campaign Against Church Ownership of Women’s Healthcare group is holding a vigil in her memory today outside the Dáil at 5:30pm.

Galway Pro-Choice is also holding an online vigil on Facebook from 7pm today, inviting people to light a candle in her memory.
