Údarás na Gaeltachta have confirmed that they intend to make a fresh planning application for the Pairc na Mara marine innovation centre in Connemara.

Last month An Bord Pleanála rejected an appeal by Údarás against the county council’s decision to refuse planning for the marine industries centre in Cill Chiaráin.

Chief Executive of Údarás Tomás Ó Síocháin stated that they have been examining the matter closely since the Bord’s decision, and remain committed to the project.

“In light of An Bord Pleanála’s decision, we consulted with a number of planning and legal experts, and we strongly believe that the best path for the project is a new application to the local Planning Authority.”

“We are fully committed to Páirc na Mara. It is an extremely important project for the Iorras Aithneach region, and it is crucial that it be brought to fruition.”

The marine innovation park was a central pillar of Údarás’s strategy for increasing employment and reversing community decline and rural flight.

Tomás Ó Síocháin spoke about the “national employment, research and training opportunities it would create,” along with economic benefits for the local area.

“However, we must ensure that our planning approach is consistent with new climate change requirements and any other considerations that may apply.”

“We will study An Bord Pleanála’s decision closely, to address any issues arising, and we are confident that we will be in a position to do so.”
