Two people were killed and another injured in a tragic car crash in Connacht which occurred in the early hours of Friday morning.

Gardaí attended the scene of a single car crash on the R293 between Ballaghadereen and Gorteen, at Edmonstown road this morning.

Emergency Services and Gardaí attended the scene at approximately 3:30am on Friday.

The three people travelling in car were treated at the scene by emergency services personnel for serious injuries.

One man in his 20s was pronounced dead at the scene, while a woman in her 30s was removed by ambulance to Castlebar hospital. She was later pronounced dead.

The third occupant of the car, a man in his 20s, was also taken to Castlebar Hospital, where he is being treated.

Gardaí have said that his injuries are not believed to be life threatening.

The crash site remains closed for a technical examination by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators, and local diversions are in place.

Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to this collision to come forward.

Any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were travelling on the R293 at the time of the collision are asked to make this footage available to Gardaí.
