Galway TD Michael Fitzmaurice has condemned the decision by Bus Eireann to close a number of intercity routes, and said that allowing it will leave Transport Minister and Green Party leader Eamon Ryan “red faced”.

Bus Eireann announced during the week that it is shuttering several Expressway Intercity routes, including two from Galway serving Dublin and Limerick.

The decision was made so that resources could be focused on city and commuter services, and to “safeguard” the remaining 14 Expressway routes.

“This is evolving into a laughable situation,” Michael Fitzmaurice said, adding, “Minister Ryan and his party have preached time and time again when it comes to the importance of expanding public transport routes.”

“And yet, it seems as if these expressway services will cease with Ryan at the wheel in the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport.”

“Despite this being classed as a commercial decision, and the redirecting of services and personnel to other areas, many people depend on these expressway services for travelling to work, college or medical appointments.”
