A City Councillor has said that people are being caught in a “speed trap” around Oranmore, as the limit has been changed without notice.

Galway City Councillor Alan Cheevers has said that motorists were not properly informed about a reduction in the speed limit on the Oranmore Coast Road.

The limit there had been 80km/hr, but has since been reduced to a 50km/hr speed limit.

“I have had numerous representations from residents over last few days who have been caught and issued fines,” Alan Cheevers said.

He added that many people feel that the 50km/hr limit appeared “overnight without notice” and intend to appeal the fines they have received.

Cllr Cheevers says he is all for reducing speed and safety of motorists, cyclists and walkers, that but that there must be proper consultation with residents in area if reducing speed limits
