A swimming ban is currently in place at Trá na mBan beach in Spiddal due to water contamination by bacteria.
Galway County Council detected elevated levels of bacteria in water samples taken last Thursday, May 26.
This is suspected to be related to high levels of rainfall in the days preceding this.
Further water samples were taken last Friday, and the results of these tests are expected this week.
In the mean time, visitors to the beach are advised to avoid swimming in or splashing the water, and not to swallow any.
Overall Trá na mBan consistently has had ‘Excellent’ water quality test results since 2014, and this type of contamination is typically short-lived.
