University of Galway Students’ Union has launched its Seachtain Ghaelach events which will run next week from Monday 14 to Friday 18 November.
The week will encourage students and staff across the university to use whatever level of Gaeilge they have at fun, free, inclusive events.
To start the week there will be a pop-up Gaeltacht on Monday morning at Blackrock Diving Tower.
Here the SU is collaborating with the Coldvember charity swimmers to bring the Gaeltacht to the sea complete with trad music to warm up students post dip.
There will also be a visit from the Liam McCarthy and Sam Maguire Cups to the SU Office for all the GAA fans on campus on Monday.
Students’ Union President Sai Gujulla said they are delighted to launch the Seachtain Gaelach events to get the University community speaking more Irish in a fun and relaxed atmosphere.
“We are the first Students’ Union in the country to have a full time Gaeilge Officer and these events are just the start of our Irish language strategy,” he said.
Students’ Union Vice President for the Irish Language Barry Ó Siochrú added that they are looking forward to turning campus into a Gaeilge haven for Seachtain Ghaelach.
“We have some fantastic collaborators helping us with the week and will be doing Flirt FM takeover shows as Gaeilge, pop-up trad sessions, an Irish culture night and of course a Céilí Mór at Sult. It’s going to be an exciting week!”
