Status Red warning issued for Galway by Met Eireann as Storm Bert approaches

Met Eireann has upgraded its warning for Galway to Status Red, with extremely heavy rain which could cause severe flooding expected.

From midnight tonight until 10am on Saturday Galway is expected to be hammered by heavy rain from Storm Bert.

This carries a high risk of severe flooding, with damage to homes and businesses and dangerous travelling conditions.

The highest accumulations of rainfall are expected in West Galway, with up to 60mm of rainfall forecast by Met Eireann.

Other areas of the county may experience 40mm – 55mm of rain during a 12 hours period.

A similar Status Red warning has been issued for Cork, and much of the west coast of the country will be under a Status Orange warning overnight.

Storm Bert is expected to hit starting from Friday night, with a Wind and Rain warning for Leinster, Munster, Connacht, Cavan and Monaghan.

This will be in place from 10pm on Friday until midday tomorrow, with very strong southeast to south winds coupled with heavy rain forecast.
