The orange weather warning for gale force winds came into effect at 9pm and will remain in place until 1am on Thursday.

It cautions that “Strong southerly winds, veering southwest will reach mean speeds of 65 to 80km/h with gusts up to 120km/h for a short time tonight.”

A separate status orange warning for high winds was in place for Cork earlier today.

Met Eireann has also extended the hours of a yellow weather warning covering all of Ireland until 3am on Thursday.

That alert is for winds reaching 90-110km/hr, strongest in the west and southwest coastal areas.

A Gale Warning for western coastal waters also remains in place, with winds expected to reach storm force at times tonight.
