Snow clearing from Tuam roads but icy conditions expected

Heavy snow has been cleared from most roads in the Tuam area this evening, but icy conditions are expected to create additional hazards later.

Heavy snowfalls earlier this afternoon created dangerous driving conditions for motorists in the are today, particularly on the R332, Tuam Bypass, and nearby hills.

Galway County Council has said snow has since cleared from most roads in the Tuam area, but some still remains lying in sheltered areas.

Motorists are still advised to exercise extreme caution, as with temperatures set to drop below 0 tonight, wet roads are expected to lead to icy conditions.

This week is set to be cold and frosty across the country, with the worst forecast for Galway later in the week.

A status yellow weather for snow and ice has been issued for all of Connacht, Munster, and Leinster for the 24 hours from 8am Thursday to 8am Friday.

Up to 5cm of snow is forecast to accumulate in some areas on Thursday Met Eireann has said, possibly more in mountainous areas.
