Galway Daily news Some traffic disruption is expected at the Galway-Roscommon county line today near Mountbellew due to roadworks taking place

Road safety works to link the footpath at New Line, Athenry to the Monivea road junction are set to begin shortly.

Galway East TD Sean Canney said that he has been in communication with Galway County Council about the path at Caheroyan, Athenry and they have assured him work will begin in the next few weeks.

Tender have been put out for contractors to complete the works, and the council is waiting for them to be returned for evaluation.

Once the tenders are back with the council its expected that a contractor will be chosen and works will commence in short order.

Deputy Canney said that the lack of a footpath along that stretch of road has been a danger for pedestrians.

“This is a very dangerous area for pedestrians due to the high volume and speed of the traffic. When completed, the works will provide a safe access for pedestrians.”

Local councillors Gabe Cronnelly and Peter Feeney have been working with Deputy Canney to have this footpath installed for some time now.
