Plans are progressing to enhance Athenry town centre by moving many overhead cables underground.
Galway East TD Seán Canney says that a Part 8 planning application is being prepared for the project, and is expected to be submitted shortly.
The Independent TD said that the overhead cables are an “eyesore”, and that putting them in underground ducts will enhance the town centre appearance.
“Athenry is a very historic town full of built heritage and the overhead cables are taking from the theme of the town centre.”
The mover for these works in Athenry follows similar projects already undertaken in Dunmore, Headford and Tuam under the Town & Village Renewal Scheme.
“We need to continue to enhance our towns in order to ensure they are attractive as places to visit, work or live in”.
