Plans for the construction of a significant expansion of Gort National School have continued to move forward despite the current conditions.
Galway East TD Ciaran Cannon said that he has received confirmation that work has commenced on architectural planning for the major building project for Gort National School.
Currently Gort NS is spread across two sites in the town centre, and at the edge of town.
Plans have been in the works to modernise the delivery of primary school services in Gort since last year, with a design team appointed for the project in July 2019.
“Right now surveys are in the process of being carried out at the school site,” Ciaran Cannon said of the current state of the project.
The Fine Gael TD added that the scope of the project has also been increased, and now intends to deliver up to a 12-classroom school, with 2 Special Education Needs classrooms and 7 Special Education Teacher rooms.
“As we work towards the day when our schools can once again re-open, it is vital that we keep momentum behind projects already in the pipeline, involving major investment in our local educational facilities”.
Deputy Cannon said that he has been in regular contact with Minister McHugh about this project to ensure its “timely progression”.
