Planning permission is being sought to convert a former bookshop in Galway City Centre to a new sandwich bar and coffee shop.

Plans have been submitted to the city council by Margaret & Helen Cooke for a change of use to the former Bookexchange store.

The building at No. 23 Abbeygate Street Lower is a protected structure, and a conservation report was submitted with this planning application.

The project would involve converting the ground and first floor of the building to its new café function.

The conservation report in question states that the two storey building, originally a terraced house, possibly dates to the late 18th or early 19th century.

The effect on the building would be minimal, the report states, as the only partitions put up in the late 20th century will be removed.

Galway City Council is due to make a decision on this planning application by June 5 of this year.
