Minister for Housing, Planning and Local Government, Eoghan Murphy TD visited the new 429 bed campus accommodation in NUI Galway today in advance of its official opening.

The new Goldcrest Village opened to residents for the new academic term this week, and is located on campus near to the existing 760 bed Corrib Village accommodation.

The price of student accommodation has been a controversial topic over the summer, with the Students’ Unions at Galway’s two colleges condemning “extortionate” rent prices for student accommodation.

Galway East TD Anne Rabbitte has said that she knows of at least 22 students that were sleeping rough in Eyre Square last September because they couldn’t find a place to live.

This year, Deputy Rabbitte warned, that number could be as high as 50.
