€616,000 in funding has been secured for a much anticipated public outdoor swimming pool in East Galway coming this summer.

The Shannon Bank Park Development Group has announced a significant fundraising drive following the successful allocation of €616,000 in grant aid from the Fáilte Ireland Just Transition Fund towards the much-anticipated upgrade of the Banagher outdoor swimming pool.

The new pool is set to open in Banagher this summer, offering an exciting new facility for the local community and visitors alike.

This project will result in a state-of-the-art outdoor swimming facility, including wheelchair access, enhanced seating, wider pontoons, and a kayak/paddleboard launch and is situated on the banks of the Shannon.

The overall budget for the pool is approximately €788,000. 84% of this amount has been secured through grant aid and fundraising to date, leaving approximately €125,000 to be raised locally.

Reflecting the widespread popularity of the pool already, a wide number of local organisations have indicated their support for the project and plan to host fundraising events as outlined below:

– Auction Night: A major auction night will take place in April. Please get in touch with committee members if you have items to donate.

– River Shannon Challenge: The local swimming club is planning a fundraising swim on 28th June open to entrants from around the country. This event promises to be a highlight of the fundraising campaign.

– Carrauntoohil Challenge: 100+ locals will climb Ireland’s Tallest Mountain in support of the campaign.

– Nameplates and Corporate Sponsorship Opportunities: Supporters can contribute by purchasing personalised nameplates that will be displayed at the new pool. Corporate sponsorship opportunities are also available for businesses looking to play a vital role in this transformative community project.

– A page has also been set up on the ‘idonate’ fundraising platform at www.idonate.ie/cause/Banagherpool

Additional events include a tractor run, horse and pony trek, charity cycle and events in local pubs as well as fundraisers being organised by local schools.

“This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to create a lasting legacy for Banagher,” said John Butler, spokesperson for the Shannon Bank Park Development Group.

“We’re overwhelmed by the initial support and are calling on the community to join us in making this project a reality. Every contribution brings us closer to a new pool that will benefit generations to come.”

The upgraded outdoor swimming pool will offer numerous benefits to the community. Beyond providing a safe and enjoyable environment for swimmers of all ages, it will promote physical health and mental well-being, offering a welcoming and inclusive space for everyone.

The pool will strengthen the community by bringing people together and fostering a sense of belonging. Additionally, it holds significant historical value, as there has been a swimming pool at this location since the 1950s.

Its development will also positively impact the local economy, and enhance the recreational appeal of the East Galway area, encouraging tourism and boosting local businesses.
