Lidl is planning a significant expansion of the discount food store at Carraig Láir Shopping Centre in Oranmore.
Plans have been submitted to the county council by Lidl Ireland to increase the floorspace of its Oranmore store 313m², including an additional 68m² of retail space.
According to the planning application, Lidl expects that it could hire five more full-time staff in the Oranmore store as a result of the expansion.
The expansion is necessary, the discount outlet claims, “to enable the provision of an appropriate modern service to customers and provide sufficient floorspace to cater for existing demand”.
It is also claimed that it would contribute to the “vitality and viability” of Carraig Láir Shopping Centre by enhancing the facilities of its anchor tenant.
Work that would be involved in this development includes taking over some vacant, adjacent retail space at the shopping centre and reconfiguring the layout of the ground floor mall.
The design and construction of this development would take approximately 12 months to complete.
Galway county council is due to make a decision on this application by April 10.
