Galway daily news COVID-19 cases more than double at UHG

Despite little change in the overall number of COVID hospitalisations in Galway in recent days, the number of critical cases in the ICU has fallen.

There were seven confirmed cases at University Hospital Galway as of Wednesday evening, with another two cases at Portiuncula Hospital.

However just three of those cases are in the Intensive Care Unit at UHG, down from six on May 1 when all of the hospital’s COVID patients were in Intensive Care.

There were no COVID-19 patients in the ICU at Portiuncula Hospital in Ballinasloe as of yesterday evening.

Nationwide there 122 confirmed cases in Irish hospitals last night, with 37 of those people in the intensive care unit.

While the falling hospital figures for COVID-19 are to be welcomed, hospital staff are still working under extreme pressure.

Safety measures surrounding hospital attendance and work introduced for the pandemic remain in place, while more and more hospital services are resuming.
