The new ‘Quest Lough Derg’ will increase the numbers of visitors to Portuma for adventure and activity tourism, according to a Galway East TD.
The event will begin in September next year and will allow people to take to the Lough Derg region and race its waterways, kayak on Lough Derg itself, run along the banks of the Shannon or cycle through its villages, roads and forests.
Minister Ciaran Cannon welcomed the announcement of the new quest, saying: “I am especially pleased that this new addition to the Quest series will add to the number of adventure and activity tourists already frequenting the Portumna district and sampling the trails in the Forest Park.
“With the adventure tourism sector estimated to be worth a staggering €1.2bn, the new Quest Lough Derg event will ensure that Portumna is well positioned to grow the district`s profile in this sector and any associated economic opportunities.”
