Galway Daily news Tuam NCT centre opens Monday

The long awaited NCT Test Centre in Tuam is opening on Monday, and is now accepting online bookings for car tests.

The test centre will have the capacity to inspect 20,000 cars a year, and will create 12 jobs in the area.

This business has been a long time coming, with work on the conversion of the former Hi-Way Garage on the Dublin Road, Tuam starting in the summer of 2018.

“This will also bring jobs to Tuam that would otherwise be located in Galway city, it is positive for Tuam,” Galway East TD Seán Canney said, welcoming the news.

“This is welcome news in that it will be a major benefit for car owners in Tuam and the surrounding areas who will not now have to travel into Galway to have their cars tested”.

Deputy Canney added that it is a positive economic development, which also brings back into use a building which had been vacant.

“I am delighted at this good news for Tuam and I thank Galway County Council for their support at the planning stage. Great credit to due to Gary & Caroline McTigue who developed the site.”

It was originally expected that this NCT test centre would open in March of last year, before the COVID-19 pandemic.

This will increase the number of NCT service tests centres in the country to 48.
