Man in his 60s dead after alleged assault in Connemara

Gardaí from Salthill are investigating the death of a man after an alleged assault at Ballinahown in Connemara this morning.

Gardaí were called to a residence in Ballinahown shortly after 9am this morning where a man in his 60s was being treated by ambulance personnel after the alleged assault.

The injured man was taken to University Hospital Galway by ambulance, where he later passed away.

Another man in his 70s was arrested by gardaí after this incident and is currently being detained at Galway garda station under section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984.

Gardaí can hold him for questioning for up to 24 hours.

The scene of this incident is being preserved for examination by the Garda Technical Bureau.

The local coroner has been notified and the State Pathologist’s services have been requested.

A post-mortem examination will be arranged, the results of which will determine the course of this investigation
