Peter Higgins of Doon West, Rosscahill was disqualified from driving for three years in Galway District Court on Monday after being convicted of drunk driving.
The 65-year-old pleaded guilty to the offence after gardaà found him driving erratically at Pollnarooma West in Salthill on August 10, 2016.
His vehicle was visibly damaged, as were two parked cars nearby. A urine sample proved he was driving under the influence of alcohol.
Higgins was later diagnosed with type 1 and type 2 diabetes, subsequently losing a toe to the disease.
His solicitor said that the disease – unknown at the time – combined with alcohol may have contributed to his client’s impairment.
The defendant has no previous convictions.
Insurance covered the damage to all of the vehicles involved in the incident.
District Court Judge Mary Fahy gave Higgins a fine of €300 with six months to pay, and disqualified him from driving for three years.
