More traffic disruption is expected on the Headford road as efforts to repair a major water leak continue.

The leak has been located near Dunnes Stores, more than three metres below the surface of the ground on the Headford road dual carriageway.

A spokesperson for Irish Water said “Because of the topography of the ground which is soft in nature and the traffic levels, a major repair will be undertaken overnight, tonight.”

A traffic management plan will be in place overnight while repair works are taking place.

Two lanes of the Headford road will be closed to traffic to facilitate the works, with motorists diverted onto the adjacent lanes.

Irish Water will also be delivering more stores of tankered and bottled water to businesses in the area which are currently without a water supply.

The leak was first reported on Sunday and caused major traffic problems on Monday as repair crews worked on the leak.

Irish Water and Galway city council have apologised to motorists and local residents who have been affected by this disruption.

Further updates on the situation will be available through Irish Water’s Supply and Service page, or people affected can call 1850 278278.
