Loughrea town will receive €100,000 to help develop an historical walking trail around the town’s medieval moat.
Galway East TD Seán Canney said that funding has been allocated under the Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Scheme for phase two of the redevelopment of the moat walks around Loughrea.
This follows on from a similar level investment in the project by the Department of Rural and Community Development last year.
€100,000 was granted in 2019 for phase 1 of the project, which has since been completed.
“This is a very important heritage project, which will be a great asset to local enthusiasts and tourists alike,” Seán Canney said.
The funding application was made by the local Walks Committee, which is overseeing the project with the support of the county council.
The moat walk is one part of the Loughrea Walks project, which aims to restore the historic wall and bridges on the former Clanricarde estate.
The entire project is expected to cost in the region of €450,000 to complete.
